Pictures do not convey the size and coolness of this build. With over 3,300 pieces packaged in twenty-four numbered bags with two additional bags containing larger parts the build might appear overwhelming to an inexperienced LEGO builder. Do not be discouraged! LEGO has put together an excellent manual of build illustrations that are easy to follow. The first two bags piece together the support infrastructure of the build. From there, the build starts at the rear of the structure with each numbered bag dedicated to a specific sub-assembly. Along the way, the infrastructure is steadily reinforced and strengthen to provide support as the build progresses. When completed, the 1989 Batmobile is simply impressive. So impressive, my wife is making room in our living room to prominently display. Of all of the non Technics car and transportation builds, the 1989 Batmobile is far and away the best. The LEGO Designers did an incredible job. If you are a Batman and LEGO fan this build is definitely a must have. Do not procrastinate. Get it now. You will not regret it!

I've always been a fan of the Batman license. In fact, I've been appreciative of the movies, comic books and animated series since the Bruce Timm's adaptation in the 90's. The Batmobile always did stick out to me, because if you were to give me a billion dollars, that's the first thing I would buy.Jokes aside, this rendition in LEGO form of this vehicle is truly phenomenal. I did purchase it at release on Black Friday (day one purchase) at the closest LEGO Store and I did wait long enough before posting my final thoughts. Honestly, when it comes to the value proposition, it is there and that's something to be commended considering the large and heavy set, the license, what the set aims to represent and the overall aesthetics. There's now a personal value attached to it and that has not happened in a very long time. I started building LEGO sets when I was 5-6 years old and this will probably be the best building experience in quite a while. Of course, the stickers are an issue and I do wish for more printed pieces in the future. The minifigs are a nice addition but the car alone would have been enough. It was a day one purchase the second it was officially revealed and shared by reviewers. Huge respect for the designers at LEGO, special shoutout to Adam who also worked on the Tumbler.

I bought this Lego set for myself. If you want an enjoyable build, this is definitely worth it. There are so many good technical bits to build and studs going in almost every direction. I had to pace myself and limit myself with the building process, otherwise I would have built it all in one go. The final piece is also bigger than I thought it would be and it feels quite sturdy. The only issues I have with this set is the steering mechanism feels a bit flimsy when you turn the steering wheel to turn the wheels, the wheels do not turn too much, the rubber used for the wheels are a bit soft (recommend using the stand for display), and the plaque is always somewhat covered by the vehicle when the vehicle is on the display stand. I would definitely still recommend ... MoreI bought this Lego set for myself. If you want an enjoyable build, this is definitely worth it. Fantastics with some technical faults
1 August 2020

I preface my review by stating that objectively, the final product is fantastic. It's beautiful, detailed, etc. My main issue that I have with this set is the building of it itself; more specifically, some design choices that I consider to be odd, as well as some easily fixed flaws. To further expand on those points, while I did not expect the level of detail and sophistication of this set to match that found in the technic car sets, I did expect the build process to follow a kind of logical progression. Instead, the instructions often had an order of operations for building certain sections that then made later steps more difficult to physically implement and place, when doing it the other way around would be far more convenient without sacrificing any kind of ... MoreI preface my review by stating that objectively, the final product is fantastic. Instead, the instructions often had an order of operations for building certain sections that then made later steps more difficult to physically implement and place, when doing it the other way around would be far more convenient without sacrificing any kind of features. Also, in certain places, I felt it necessary to implement extra-instructional modifications so as to make the model itself more durable and stable. The biggest example I have of this is on page 265 of the instructions when you assemble and then slide in the front central cannon (or whatever it is), the assembly is held in place entirely by an axle slid barely through a 1x2 brick with a cross hole. As a result, it's very easy for the part to be pulled out/fall out. The fix for this was simple because there was more than enough room to fasten a 1/2 bush on the other end of the brick to secure the axle in place, but even that fix required me to lift up the body coverings over the front that were arbitrarily assembled prior to this step.Lastly, the instructions themselves aren't the easiest to follow because the orientation of the images causes the pieces to often be neither vertically nor horizontally aligned with the axis of placement, so extra reasoning has to be given the interpret the physical spatial positions of the pieces based on the off axis orientation of the figures in the instructions. This may just be something I was bothered with and I may be knitpicking, but these issues are not something I've experienced when building any other Lego car sets, be they technic or otherwise. More importantly, the fixes for them are very simple and easy to implement. Because of this, it leads me to believe that this set was not designed by someone with a lot of experience designing Lego vehicles, or was possibly designed in a rush without fully thinking through any potential hiccups or inconveniences during the building experience. So as a final thought, yes, I'd recommend this model to people. Yes, I had fun building it overall, and yes, it looks amazing once built. However, I'd be prepared to engage some critical thinking in the construction process, because there are simple ways to improve on the instructed steps that lead to an overall more sturdy, durable model.

I bought this December 2019 & got the limited edition reissue of the smaller version as a freebie which is nicely displayed in front of it's larger cousin.First let's cover the minifigures which are, particularly the Batman with new all-in-one Cape & Cowl, well done capturing the essence of B1989 perfectly.Be warned that this is a beast of a set to build, I would suggest tackling it in stages of 2 or 3 bags at a time & taking frequent breaks if the build is to be done in a short timeframe to prevent fatigue with the build process. The hardest part of the inital stages for B1989, which would come into play later on in the build, is getting the interior gearing right - this enables you to turn the Afterburner and pop the twin Machine Guns.As the set takes shape ... MoreI bought this December 2019 & got the limited edition reissue of the smaller version as a freebie which is nicely displayed in front of it's larger cousin.First let's cover the minifigures which are, particularly the Batman with new all-in-one Cape & Cowl, well done capturing the essence of B1989 perfectly.Be warned that this is a beast of a set to build, I would suggest tackling it in stages of 2 or 3 bags at a time & taking frequent breaks if the build is to be done in a short timeframe to prevent fatigue with the build process. The hardest part of the inital stages for B1989, which would come into play later on in the build, is getting the interior gearing right - this enables you to turn the Afterburner and pop the twin Machine Guns.As the set takes shape it becomes increasingly difficult to maneuver in the cockpit which can lead to frustation and revisiting previous stages to repair the damage you will end up doing to the controls.Once the carcass is fully constructed, & it's a pretty solid base for a piece of this size, the outer skin seems to take shape rapidly & B1989 is recognisable quickly. The turntable stand locks perfectly into the chassis and allows you, space permitting, to recreate the spinning around in the Batcave. If you don't have the space it at least allows you to adjust the angle of B1989 to display it to it's best effect.A critiscism is if you don't get the internal gearing perfect at this stage it can move around and you will lose the ability to pop the machine guns. It doesn't detract from how nice the set is BUT it can be frustrating if you want to show the intended functionality off. A similar thing has happened to 2015s Helicarrier set 76042 with the internal gears linking the crank and the fans on the "wings".Lastly I must mention it's a very weighty piece, much like the previouisly mentioned 76042 so bear this in mind when displaying it or moving it around. Although unlike 76042 it's much more robust, it's more than likely you will only have a couple of pieces on the sides around the air intakes pop off and require reattachment.

This is a very cool set, but it has some issues. The good:The batmobile is massive and looks greatLots of fun to buildIt will keep you occupied for a long timeIt's BATMANThe display stand is fantasticThe bad:Lots of fragile bits, the fins at the back especially. The stand should have been the first thing built, not the last. Setting it on the rotating stand would have made things so much easier. I spent too much time reconnecting pieces that fell off since there's no good way to pick the batmobile up to re-orient it when the instructions change view. The batmobile in the movie was incredibly sleek, I feel like more flat pieces should have been used to cover the bumps.

The title says it all, this is one of the best sets Lego has released in the past couple years, and I say this with the experience of having purchased every single one of their collector sets they have released in that time frame. This is quite possibly the funnest build experiences I've had from Lego. I've always loved the sets that combine a Technic interior that holds it together with a smooth Lego exterior. It's amazing how they were able to capture all the curves, and the sliding ability of the customized windscreen is sublimely smooth. The Batmobile is way larger than it looks in pictures, and the details are exquisite. I watched Batman 1989 during part of the build and every time the Batmobile was onscreen, I paused to compare. The design is an almost flawless replica! I have literally nothing bad to say about this set.And it is hard to build, there were several spots with complicated assemblies that I had to go back and redo because the offset is wrong. That's not a bad thing in my opinion, it boggles my mind how the designers can come up with these things.I noticed quite a few new Lego techniques I haven't seen before. The model is solid, extremely solid. I fear having to disassemble it someday because of how securely and double-securely every brick is attached to each other. That's also a good thing! If I could rank this a 6 out of 5, I would. The one drawback is the stickers, but there aren't that many and only a couple had a complicated placement. That's not enough to effect my review though. Do yourselves a favor and buy this while you still can! Batman has a unique cape, and you might never get another opportunity to own a Kim Basinger minifig or a Jack Nicholson Joker minifig either!

My favourite Batman Movie is the 1989 Tim Burton classic, and from that line alone you should gather this was purchased immediately from Lego.Com.Beginning with a stable frame helpfully colour-coded where necessary (azure bricks!) the build only gets better- moving onto perfect recreations of the movie vehicles many sleek shapes and design choices. What few play features there are (annoyingly as we saw quite a few in the movie) are done exquisitly well, with the cockpit opening in lazy fashion the highlight- it simply is the 1989 Batmobile in all its glory.Aside from the features, the techniques used are also astounding-my favourite was the wings, though I shan't spoil the process here- you need to build to find out.Over and over again you will hear it being ... MoreMy favourite Batman Movie is the 1989 Tim Burton classic, and from that line alone you should gather this was purchased immediately from Lego.Com.Beginning with a stable frame helpfully colour-coded where necessary (azure bricks!) the build only gets better- moving onto perfect recreations of the movie vehicles many sleek shapes and design choices. Batman is lovely as a display minifigure, but one does question the rubber cape- I for one would have appreciated simply a new helmet mould, with the classic fabric cape instead- it just means there are only so many poses he can make. All in all, this is a landmark of a set to end 2019 on, and I would thoroughly recommend all purchase it, whether they are a batman fan or not- the building process alone is thoroughly rewarding.

1989 Batmobile ReviewBuilt over the course of two weeks as 1-2 hour meditations to relieve me from the stress of shelter in place. Totally did the trick!PROI love the chassis. At the end of bag one you have something so sturdy you could use it as a cricket bat.The steering linkage assembly (steps 49 to 65) is a thing of beauty, grace, elegance, and downright engineering cleverness. The build is secure and sturdy (97 to 116 in particular anchor it with confidence and elegance), the action precise, and the frame around it acts to encase it securely. I stopped the build after bag four to literally play with the linkage; bag 5 (steps 135-139) gets you the steering wheel. I stopped the build after bag four to literally play with the linkage; bag 5 (steps 135-139) gets you the steering wheel. At that point I made a video to share with my brother, also an AFOL.The front "mandibles" are elegant and clever as can be - on step 92, the joining of 6051508 with 4220539 to make a three surface slanted point was inspired. The sliding canopy. Elegant and functional. I wish the forward "anchors" were actually anchored somehow, but recognize the "play" in their action is to accommodate the fact that the surface rises as the canopy slides forward. The rising machine guns from the front fenders. Again, clever gears and crank raises the guns. I wish it would be as clever as the Mustang's ability to lift and lower the rear suspension with a continuous direction cranking action (this is crank up, then crank backward to lower). The sheer size - I wish it were a little more in scale with the other vehicles like the Mustang, Mini, DB5, and Fiat, but it's "close enough," and those sweet fat tires (front tires from the Tumbler) are just a joy.The Batman mini figure. I always hated the "dolphin" bat suit of the 1989 movie, but they have captured it here with an elegance that has very nearly made me overcome my distaste with sweet nostalgia.CONSThe manual. Two problems - a book of this thickness needs to be spiral bound in order to lay flat. The only way I can clearly see the directions while building is to break the binding. Unacceptable. Alternately, it could have been broken up into smaller manuals like the Tumbler set. The Hogwarts set has twice as many pieces and gets four books - this should have been at least two, if not THREE books - or spiral bound.Which leads to the second complaint about the book: while I ::love:: the behind the scenes pictures and testimonials, if you're going to print them in three languages, thereby increasing the page count, they should be a SEPARATE book. Otherwise, it only exacerbates problem one. I imagine this would actually SAVE on costs, because the manual itself could be done without languages, causing only the behind the scenes booklet to require multiple separate printings based on language groups.Stickers - Gorilla Grodd almighty, I can't stand stickers. I understand, "pre-printed elements are more expensive and require re-use across sets to justify the cost." Well, malarky, I say. This set is expensive enough that LEGO needs to go the extra mile to print out computer and dash panels (many, I daresay, that ::could:: be used again in other sets - pretty generic computer readouts on a black background). But if there must be stickers, I wish there were an index of which page which sticker gets applied. I seem to always miss one, and then make the arduous and painstaking search of each page to try to find the elusive sticker I missed. I wish there were an index at the back of the manual, or if each sticker number had the page number printed next to it (probably easier). I actually wish this for ALL LEGO sets.

Wonderful Build
22 August 2020

Having purchased the Bugatti Chiron and Land Rover Defender, I wanted my next choice of car to be made more of system bricks rather than technic. Having watched a few reviews of the 1989 Batmobile, I headed out to my nearest stores, and managed to find one! First off, the box looks awesome, and whilst there's no fancy packaging like the Chiron, I was surprised by the number of bags inside. This made things nice and simple in never having too many pieces open at once!Like my other sets, I like to take my time with building them in between work and family life, but as the build slowly started to take place, the sheer size of it (length wise) was impressive from the start. Whilst it seemed an odd choice to have so many coloured bricks in the foundations of the car, I was appreciative of it when it came time to looking at the instructions, as I'm sure all black pieces would have made for a much tedious process.Once it's finished, you can't help but to stand back and just look at it and see it for the work of art it is. Whilst others have mentioned issues such as pieces falling off, there are a couple of places (such as the exhausts) that easily fall off, but all in all, it's a pretty solid build. The cock pit is awesome, and moves flawlessly. The guns are fantastic, and work very well. And to top it all off, the minifigs look perfect. This is such an impressive display, that friends who are neither lego or Batman fans want a closer look at it, and walk away impressed. Now I want the Tumbler!!!
