Leica Macro-Elmar-M 90mm F4 Lens (New)

A macro lens it is not, as you are required to buy the macro ring to make it work, provided of course that you use liveview on the 240. What it is, is a slow 90 mm ( f 4) which is quite cumbersome to use unless you have a sturdy tripod, and even then the lens is not as sharp as the 75 cron. To really get macro images of good quality, the trick is to get the R to M ring with the AME 100 mm 2.8 R, either alone or with the Leica original or novoflex made bellows. In other words, don't touch that with a 10' pole!

I like it for its compact size and use it with the new #14652 macro adapter (live view). Nothing to complain about image quality so far. With f4, low-light use can be tricky, but, used for travel, compactness and low weight are usually more important to me than highest speed. The close-up range is not spectacular for a macro, but OK for me. This M90mm/f4 has a wider lens ring than earlier versions, which makes it easier to handle in the collapsed position on the macro adapter. However, an unwelcome side effect of that wider ring is that the included lens hood #12575 cannot be mounted anymore in the reversed 'storage' position as on earlier M90mm/f4 - Leica acknowledged that 'feature' and IMO should update that part.

If you do not need large apertures, this Leica Macro-Elmarit 90/4 ASPH is a great lens for the Leica M. I use it like a non-macro lens.

Stuff I like: Great sharpness, contrast, color for landscape, ditto for close-up, great small size/weight and great click-on lens hood (ALL OF LEICA'S LENS HOODS SHOULD BE DESIGNED EXACTLY LIKE THE 90MM MACRO ELMAR'S). Not so good: I get that this is a rangefinder lens, but it has a poor native macro focusing ratio of 1:6:7, which only improves to 1:2 with the Leica Macro-Adapter-M. (I bought the somewhat-more-versatile Novoflex Adapter Kit for Leica M-Mount, Visoflex Lens to Leica M-Mount Camera, but I'm still not near 1:1.) Conclusion: I primarily bought the lens for landscape, and it's a swell, compact lens for landscape and casual close focus, but is not for hardcore macro shooters imaging stamps and coins and other tiny stuff.
Sharp lens. Small and light weight. It's an excellent travel companion. For the most part, the lens shade is not necessary. At f/4, there is just enough blur to the background to create separation in my subject shots, but the background still contain enough information to show time and place.
This is my first Leica Lens. It takes time to learn. This lens is great in rendering colors and low light area. Distortion is apparent in certain situation. Not a lens for architecture except detail shots. The build quality is well exceeding any J-make lens I experienced.
Put this collapsed lens in your pocket as your alternative to a 35mm on the camera and you are good to go. In 2021 on an M10 with higher ISO, the f/4 is plenty fast. It is super sharp. No, even with the macro adapter it is not a true 1:1 macro, but it does close focus. Why is it so expensive? Because it has no collapsible competition from other makes. I have had other 90's that I was unwilling to haul along, so they were unused. A cheaper unused lens is not a bargain. If you are using a Leica M, you appreciate small compact lenses. This is small and compact.
This is my second purchase of the 90 mm Macro, my first purchase was years ago of the model with the small aperture ring that the Lens Hood reverse mount on which it will not on the current version. It required the macro Google Eye adapter as the current lens requires the Macro Adapter to get near macro performance. With the current version the aperture ring can be reached without removing the hood. The lens takes excellent sharp pictures so if you are willing to accommodate its operational peculiarities it is a good purchase. I am happy I bought another lens overall, but Leica should have redesigned the hood rathe than sending a bag to put the hood in.
Excellent sharpness, saturation, colors. Fun to use.
Although too slow for hand held shots in real dim light, with my M9 either in my studio or outside even on cloudy days it's performance is excellent corner to corner. My 90 Apo might have a slight edge at f4.0 over the Macro wide open but only off a tripod. I can't see any difference at F8.0 in performance. For my last trip to Alaska and Germany and France, I took the Macro leaving the 90 Apo behind because of the size and weight and was not the least bit disappointed. Shooting in DNG, converting to Tiff with minimal tweaks, this lens goes to needle sharp 17 x 22 inch Epson print images with ease right to the corners.
