I find this slim LG DVD/CD External Drive as the best writer exclusively for your computer's recording and support needs. My desktop computer was disabled that caused its drive to disappear and unfound, and I needed one to play my DVD movies and make copies of family home movies. This LG drive is a lifesaver for me, and it functions perfectly on my computer without any power or technicality issues since I install it for the first time. On the computer, the DVDs' uploads are always sharp and pristine, and making old home movies' recordings come out superiorly copied like no other :-) If you're searching for a DVD/CD/ROM drive, look no further. Undoubtedly this is a professional LG product you must have. You won't be disappointed.

After 6 mo was told I needed to buy a 1-year license for an additional $80, to continue using the drive. No where in any of the materials was there any mention of having to buy additional software to use the drive. A rip off.

I purchased this because I bought a new laptop and it didn't have a disc drive. I needed the drive for several reasons and almost didn't purchase it because of the negative remarks. One stood out, "it does what it is supposed to." Knowing Best Buy I took the plunge and I'm satisfied. Note however, I don't use it for DVD, only data.

This drive is useless for me I bought this DVD drive because it claimed MDisk and Blu-ray support. It does not work for either one. After calling LG support, I was told it only works for a 4.7GB disk made by one manufacturer only. They should have clarified in the Ad. I wasted several days trying to make it work with 25GB Mdisks and Blu ray disks. I will avoid buying any LG computer products in the future.
Waited several months to open this and hook it up. I see now that I was suppose to have a DVD included that had additional software. I did not. Windows File Explorer will not recognize this drive when properly hooked up. Device Manager shows that the driver is updated and the "device is working correctly." But it also does not show up in Control Panel > Devices. LG Support's only solution was to download 3rd party software (that malwarebytes flags as a warning for extreme malware) to "play videos." No solution offered at all for being able to open the drive and view files, or to write to the DVD. The only other request was to "find another computer to try it in." I don't know about you, but I only have my own computer, so that was also a no-go. Complete waste of money.
I read reviews on Amazon and other sites before purchasing this drive and decided it was worth the risk because it was relatively inexpensive. i purchased the drive so I could create System Recovery Disks on a Dell desktop with Windows 10 that had a Read Only drive. I opened Windows explorer so I could monitor the drives on the system, and then plugged in the drive without worrying about software or drivers. I noticed a blip in Explorer (so fast I couldn't see what happened), and knew that the computer at least saw something. I rebooted the computer twice, went into Device Manager, and saw that the drive was recognized. I created the recovery disks without any issues at all. While there may be some installation-related issues, this drive worked perfectly on Windows 10 without doing anything other than restarting the machine.
I still burn the occasional CD, so when I bought my new laptop sans CD read/writer I bought this as an external add-on. Readily recognized by the laptop; easy to use. It’s extremely lightweight and thin - makes it easy to carry/store in a laptop case. It is very plasticy - that’s what makes it so lightweight - but that’s also lends to it feeling cheap. It works; that’s the main thing.

Installation was a snap and took less than 1 minute to be up and running. I didn't bother to install the DVD writer software provided as I have a favorite I always use. The software disc also comes with other packages if you choose to use them. But if you already have a DVD burner software you're ready to go the second you plug it into your computer. I burned a DVD first thing. WOW, what a difference in speed than the same speed DVD burner built into my computer. The drive is pretty compact, about the size of a plastic CD case and made entirely of plastic. It seems sturdy enough but not ruggedly so. It requires only the one USB cable for power and data which is nice. The read speed seems pretty decent and I have not had any issues using to play music cds. Overall it seems to do the job for me

The software download was awful. No instructions how to run a DVD/movie. Kept getting error messages. Had to install free DVD software/player just to play my movies. I mainly bought this to download software for taxes etc. It is the slowest downloading unit I have ever used and is made very cheaply. I was very close to sending it back, but was able to download my tax software which is my number one concern. Movies were just an added hope that I thought I could use with my new pc.
