App has issues

I like the idea of this smart switch, and if you are planning on having an ecosystem of LIFX products in your home then it makes even more sense to add at least one of these. It is relatively easy to install given some knowledge of how to do electrical work, and you absolutely must have a neutral wire otherwise keep looking as this will not work for you. It looks very sleek and has nice backlit buttons. Buttons is a relative term as they are capacitive not physical but do offer nice haptic feedback when touched. Each button is simply 1 touch on 1 touch off for whatever function you assign to it via the app which is required to get the full scope of what this switch does operating properly. When on the backlight is stronger, and when off the backlight is very dim. ... MoreI like the idea of this smart switch, and if you are planning on having an ecosystem of LIFX products in your home then it makes even more sense to add at least one of these. Each button is simply 1 touch on 1 touch off for whatever function you assign to it via the app which is required to get the full scope of what this switch does operating properly. When on the backlight is stronger, and when off the backlight is very dim. For me this switch was a great solution to a problem I consider my house to have in one room, where half of each outlet is wired to a light switch for plugging in lamps and there is only one conventional light fixture. Wiring this switch to that wiring run allows me now to keep the power going to all those plugs I formerly did not have good access to with one button and using a smart bulb from LIFX in the lamp I have in there allows me to use the other button to turn that bulb on or off as if it were a fixed light instead of a lamp. I have looked for some way to do exactly that without leaving the light switch visibly in the on position which bothers me for many years and here we are finally. So that is frankly wonderful. So far everything is working exactly how I set it up, one button controls total power the other operates the light bulb for the lamp. Now for the reasons I could not give it 5 stars in my review. First and foremost, I made it sound like the app was easy to use and get everything setup. That is far from the case unfortunately. I spent well over an hour simply trying to add the device to my account so I could get everything setup, troubleshooting, checking wiring, trying the setup wizard repeatedly, checking the website for help, and had briefly given up considering allowing it to be a nice looking but dumb switch. Eventually I finally came across a note suggesting that turning off cellular on my phone while running the setup in the app would help it get things done. That was the ticket and thankfully it finally worked. I am frustrated that the app is poorly designed enough to allow for an issue like that to occur when I have never experienced anything similar on any other smart home device, which is a very large number in my home. It really soured my initial impressions to have such problems with it like I did. After adding the device to my app account, I must still shut off cellular even to change settings and button operations which is insane to me. It all works now, and I shouldn’t have to spend much time in the app anymore but considering how important the app is to getting it working it is a huge oversight that needs to be addressed. I would prefer that I be able to add the switch to my HomeKit like I can with the smart bulb from them, but with how I have things setup it is not completely necessary just odd.Knowing what I know now about the app in hindsight I would still recommend this switch so long as you know about the cellular data issue it has. It is still elegant, works well now post setup and provided me with a long sought after solution to a specific problem for which I am very excited.

I have no shortage of smart lights at home, from a few different manufacturers. The biggest issue with growing your smart home devices is the cost of initial investment, which is high regardless of the solution you chase. If you’re installing this under an existing multi-gang plate, know that it will only fit under a gang cut out for a rocker switch (not a standard toggle light switch).Another thing to mention here is that these switches require connection to a neutral wire, which for most newer homes shouldn’t be an issue. An older home without neutral wiring available will need a more involved installation and, likely, a licensed electrician.Once installed, the switch operates *for the most part* like any other switch, with some exceptions. No special configuration is required, as this switch (even without connection to the LIFX app) is just a touch-sensitive version of what you are used to. The switch has two buttons—the bottom button toggles the light on and off, and the top button can be programmed to control other LIFX (or LIFX compatible) devices. I did have a LIFX bulb in a lamp in the same room as the rest of the lights being controlled by the switch, so I was able to assign that lamp to the top button. The app is fine, although not tremendous in any particular area. Structurally it’s the same as many other smart light apps, with basic controls, scenes, effects, routines, etc. The app isn’t particularly intuitive, but it gets the job done. The switch retails for around $50, which is right around the same amount as you would find from competing manufacturers. The big downside I see with LIFX is the non-agnosticism when it comes to working with other manufacturers products, since the non-circuit button can only target items within the LIFX app. Still, if you have other LIFX bulbs (which seem to be a bit cheaper than some other leading brand smart bulbs), the LIFX smart switch may make a lot of sense in your home.

Installation will require a Philips screwdriver to secure the switch to your wall. You’ll need to remember to turn off the power to your light switch, to ensure you eliminate the risk of electrocution during installation. I made note of the current wiring, as you’ll need to identify the hot, lead, neutral, and ground wire. If you’re in a newer home, you’ll either have a red wire for the switch, black for the lead, green for ground (or exposed copper wire), and white for neutral. If you’re already comfortable with installing light switches, installation will only take a few minutes. After which you can power the switch back on, and begin set up in the LIFX app. There is an indicator light in the upper left which will provide you with a status during boot and setup. In my case, the switch wouldn’t properly start up and broadcast its initial Wi-Fi signal but was able to get around this by resetting the switch by pressing and holding both buttons until the status lights flashed green. I should note the status light will only flash or show the light for about a minute, and then will display the status light about every half hour until the connectivity issue or setup is complete. This is where the app setup was a bit finicky, as the device walk through would never display my Wi-Fi network (or any network), necessitating that I hit “Other” and manually enter my network information. Once I realized it wasn’t scanning for Wi-Fi, entering the information took only a minute and it connected right away. IF you must manually enter the network name and password, you’ll need to know the security standard (WPA2, etc.) to properly connect. In my case, I didn’t run into any further issues once the device was properly set up in the app, and the device was up to date when installed.Once the app has set up the switch, you’ll go through the process of confirming the groups and location of the device. The app will ask you about setting up the two buttons to control your normal switch function and add a smart bulb to the first button. In my case, I had an existing LIFX smart bulb installed another light fixture and was able to select this from the device list. Once you’ve programmed the two buttons, the device is essentially ready to go! If you’ve already setup LIFX with HomeKit and Alexa, the switch is immediately available using either Smart Assistant (Siri and Alexa), or you can set up your Google Assistant if you’re using their platform. The switch itself displays a nice warm amber glow on either button when they’re turned on, and a slightly dim amber light when powered off; making the switch easy to find in the dark. I found the LIFX button (topmost button) for the bulb was instantaneously powering on/off my LIFX bulb without delay. The bottom button was used to power my ceiling fan, and unlike other buttons there is no click noise or any mechanical movement. It’s simply a touch panel, and when engaged will light up the button being tapped. There is no dimming feature to this switch, as it’s simply turning on/off the connected bulb or fixture. If you’re using a LIFX switch for the top button, it will simply turn on the device on the most recent setting (for instance will turn on purple if it was set to purple when powered off). I have yet to experience any power loss issues and haven’t run into any connectivity problems with the switch. The switch also doesn’t benefit from “Power Restore” setting in the app, which would return the switch to its previous power state in the event of power loss. I can only assume if the power goes out, the switch will just turn back on. It will not, however, disable the feature on your existing LIFX bulbs if you’ve already toggled the setting on. The LIFX app does offer scheduling options for your switch and bulb; so, it’s easy to select times for power on/off events in the app (including sunrise/sunsets). If you’re already using Alexa or Siri to control your lights, you’ll find that you can add them to routines without any issues.Overall, the LIFX switch offered more functionality than my previous smart switch, was easy to install, and had the benefit of controlling my LIFX bulb group in the process. The single gang size makes this ideal for multi-switch wall plates, alongside other switches, and worked well with my Mesh Wi-Fi network. Any issues seen during installation were easily rectified using the touch buttons to reset the device, and the switch has been very responsive in the LIFX app, with my Alexa voice control, and the warm glow makes it easy to see when walking into a dark room.

After it's installed just follow the instructions in the app and you should get up and running pretty quick. I've heard of people having some issues with the setup process but I didn't notice anything. After everything is set up you can use the app to program each button for what you want it to do. The switch has a single physical relay inside that controls the switch you replaced. This will act just like a normal switch and turn on the overhead lights or outlet that's wired directly to that switch. But you can program the other button to control another LIFX bulb somewhere else (probably in that room). So if you have a lamp on the other side of the room with a LIFX bulb in it that normally doesn't have a physical switch to control it, now you can use the main relay switch to turn on the main lights and then the second button to turn on that lamp as well.Obviously that's just one simple example but mixing this switch with other LIFX products make it really neat and gives it a lot of potential. If you don't also have other LIFX bulbs, I wouldn't recommend this but I think it's definitely worth it if you're either invested in the LIFX ecosystem already or if you plan on picking up some LIFX bulbs as well.

Great switch easy to install
20 December 2021

Ive installed a few kasa and wemo switched previously, so I have some experience with installation, so as usual, before installation make sure you shut off power at the source. Go ahead and connect the appropriate wires to the ones in the wall once you remove the old switch. Once wired up and back in the wall, go ahead and restore power at the main breaker. With power on follow the steps in the app to complete setup. I did not have any issues with setup like some others. How this differs from the kasa and wemo switches i have is that they only controlled one device, where this with 2 buttons has the ability for 2 devices. As long as those locations are using smart bulbs, you will be set.I really enjoy the look of this switch. Very sleek. I mean...It looks good?

I have a number of smart bulbs in my home and of course, when I have them installed in overhead lights I have to make sure my light switch is in the fixed 'ON' position. It gets a little tiring having to ALWAYS use an app or voice control so I thought I'd test out the LIFX switch.Installation: The installation is pretty vague, though I would imagine intentionally so given the fact that you're messing with live electricity. After cutting power at the breaker and pulling out my existing dumb switch I was disappointed to find that I did not have 4 neatly color coded wires to align with the wires on the back of the smart switch. Fortunately my father in law is an electrician and was able to help me identify the load, line, ground, and neutral. After cutting power at the breaker and pulling out my existing dumb switch I was disappointed to find that I did not have 4 neatly color coded wires to align with the wires on the back of the smart switch. Fortunately my father in law is an electrician and was able to help me identify the load, line, ground, and neutral. The big thing for me was that I had two black wires - one was the line (hot) and the other went to the bulbs and I had no idea which was which.Once I got the wires figured out the rest of the physical install was pretty easy. The holes accepting the mounting screws are oval and had lots of room for maneuvering which probably makes sense to allow for adjustments, but it was a pain in the butt to keep the switch level because it would want to travel to one side of the hole as you tightened the screws.Make sure your switch is tight and straight before snapping on the cover plate. Once it's on it's kind of a pain to pry back off.The app install definitely a one-star experience. Tapping + to add a switch was fine, then it instructed me to connect to the wif-fi signal coming from the LIFX, that went OK, then it told me to select my Wi-Fi....it spun....and spun....and the only option to select was 'other'. So I tapped other and typed in my wifi name and password. Nothing. Finally I found another review on here that had the same issue and using 'other' worked for him, so I tried again. I eventually got it to work by selecting the different security options. I mean who knows off the top of their head if they use WPA2, or WPA2 Mixed, or WPA2 Double Secret Probation edition?Once I got passed that the rest was easy enough. I was able to program the top button to turn on my smart bar and bottom button toggles my ceinling fixture.I was a little perturbed that the switch does not appear to be HomeKit compatible even though all my LIFX bulbs are. Fortunately, everything I want to control is available from the LIFX app, but I would have loved to be able to easily control my overhead light with HomeKit too.In conclusion, if you've invested in LIFX bulbs then I would recommend the switch. Frustrations aside with the app, the quality of the product is good, the look and feel are exactly what I wanted, and it meets my needs. If you want a versatile switch that integrates with your other ecosystems I would do your research and look for alternatives.

LIFX Smart Switch

So I received my LIFX Smart Switch about a week ago and have been testing it out on my light switch in my condo. I've slowly been making the move over the last couple of years to making my home more "smart like," and this switch came along at the right time. Inside the box is the LIFX Smart Switch and faceplate with the Ground (green), Neutral (white), Load (red) and Line (black) wires coming out the back, 2 screws, and 4 wire connectors. Initially the installation seemed a bit daunting as I've never installed or attempted to install anything electrical before. So I made sure to take my time. After shutting off the power at my breaker box I began the installation process by removing the old light switch from my living room and carefully looking at the wires to see what goes where. Taking a picture of your setup before and after may help. It did for me. I connected the wires and secured the LIFX Smart Switch into place. At this point my only hope was that I could at least use the switch to turn my lights on and off. If that happens then I'm good. I powered the breaker box back up and installed the app. This is where I started to have issues is with the LIFX app and connecting the switch. After having installed this and getting an error read, I wasn't sure if I had installed the switch correctly since the user manual is not detailed at all. After a couple more resets it finally connected. For someone that has never installed anything electrical before, It seemed a bit much (for me at least) between the whole installation process and trying to get it connected through the app which seems a bit wonky at times. My only con would be for description of this light to be a little more detailed as to the type of switch it is and the installation paper to be updated. Recommended for those that are a little more skilled in electrical installation but a good light nonetheless.

Modern Lights for the Modern Home

The LIFX Smart Switch and A19 Clean bulb combo is a wifi LED bulb and an in-wall single switch replacement. Yes, there are two buttons, but this still only electrically controls a single load. However, you're able to configure things so that more than just the single connected electrical device is switched when a button is pressed. Aside from being a wifi bulb, this one has a unique feature where the bulb can output HEV light to destroy bacteria.Installation is pretty straightforward, though may be a bit more involved for the light switch depending on your comfort with that level of home repair. Aside from being a wifi bulb, this one has a unique feature where the bulb can output HEV light to destroy bacteria.Installation is pretty straightforward, though may be a bit more involved for the light switch depending on your comfort with that level of home repair. For the bulb, pick an appropriate place and screw it in. I chose the middle light of the three above the sink. This would give it good coverage of the sink and counters to either side. The light switch then replaced the switch which controls all three lights. For anyone who has started down the smart home journey with bulbs, it is likely you've inevitably run into the issue where a bulb is inaccessable because the switch has been turned off. I wanted to maintain the normal functionality where the wall switch near the sink turn on and off all the lights, but I wanted to ensure the Clean bulb could always be turned on either remotely or via a scheduled action. This light switch was white, and matched up with the white plate covers already in the house. It definitely looks a lot more modern than the other light switches, and I'm starting to think about using the switch approach for controlling dumb bulbs, rather than trying to get everyone to stop using the light switches so the smart bulbs can be app or voice controlled.Next step was to install the LIFX app and pair the switch and bulb. The process is pretty simple, disconnect your phone from the internet, pair to the light or switch, then configure them to connect to your home wifi. Then assign the location, group, and give it a name. Like is normal in many smart home hub apps, you can create scenes, scheduled events, control the light colors and on/off state, etc. For the bulb, I mainly used the app to set the color so that it matched the two other non smart bulbs to each side. Then I set a schedule where it would switch to cleaning for a couple hours starting at 2:01 AM, switch back to my normal "color" at 4AM. For the switch, the top button acts as a normal ON/OFF. But not quite because it actually activates a scene when turning on that sets the Clean bulb to my desired color. The bottom button also has some scene behavior, but it instead is a manual way to turn on and off the HEV clean function. Aside from that, the switch schedule turns on the power at 2:00 AM (so I'm guaranteed that the bulb will have power to respond to it's scheduled actions) and turn off at 4:01AM. What would be cool would be more smarts such that if you assigned a smart bulb to a switch, it knew that it would need to power the bulb first, then perform the bulb action without needing to schedule this separately. Though, this is also the argument for going completely with both smart bulbs and switches. Then the switches instead of cutting electricity to the bulb, just send it the command to turn off. While I can't objectively comment on the performance of the clean feature, the bulb otherwise was easy to control and had a good range of color and brightness. I was really impressed by the switch. Pleasing design, the buttons have a nice glow that makes it easy to find in the dark but aren't bright enough to be an unintentional night light.

Modern wifi switch that could be great.

Making an older house into a smart home is no easy task on a budget. Buying wifi bulbs and switches helps with some of the automation. The LIFX smart switch looks very simple a clean without the touchscreen and extra buttons, just two touch sensor buttons with haptic feedback and that's it.Out of the box, it comes with what you need to install it and directions for the 4 wire connection. Sadly, it doesn't tell you anything about features or even what types of switches it's compatible with. I had quite a hard time finding switch locations with a 4 wire setup and a lot of running up and down from the basement to turn off/on breakers. Sadly, it doesn't tell you anything about features or even what types of switches it's compatible with. I had quite a hard time finding switch locations with a 4 wire setup and a lot of running up and down from the basement to turn off/on breakers. After attempting to wire it in 4 locations and switching wires around, I couldn't get it to reset to the blinking green light for pairing, just blinked red. I decided to call support and got a call the next day from an associate. He helped me go through the setup then told me the switch is not compatible with a 3-way switch. So I tried installing on a single pole switch that only has 3 wires and was told to splice a wire from the bundled white wires not currently used for the neutral. Fortunately that worked and I was able to connect the switch. I think the fact that it's a single pole switch should be front and center on the box, not somewhere in small print on the back.Once connected and set up, the switch works like any other switch except for the fact that you can control the lights with your phone. If you happen to have a LIFX bulb connected with the switch, the app lets you change color profiles, brightness, color temp, and even set up schedules for on/off times and nightlight modes which are great; but only if you have their bulbs. The switch only turns lights on/off, no dimming or color change is possible.Although this is a modern looking switch with simple backlit controls with haptic feedback, it's also simple functioning too. The only benefit I can see from installing a switch like this is the ability to turn on/off 2 or more LIFX products in one place. Given my difficulty installing and it's limited function, I might not recommend it unless you have a newer house and are planning on buying a suite of LIFX products to enable full functionality.

Perfect Five!

Installation was easy but please be aware that I have some experience installing smart switches all over my house and every time it becomes easier and easier. So, if you are going to install it yourself, take some time to learn how to wire it safely. What I liked the most about this switch is that it has two very useful buttons. One is just to turn any lights on and off. The second, along with the first, can trigger different themes as customized on the app if you also have LIFX smart lights. That worked great for me because I can turn on the “dumb” kitchen lights that are directly connected to the switch, and the smart LIFX lights in the living room. All from the same switch. It reminded me of the Philips Hue switch although the LIFX Smart Switch is directly wired and can also control non-smart lights while the former is portable and uses battery but can only control Philips smart lights. You can control the switch with Alexa or schedule it with IFTTT, for instance, but you can also turn it on and off the old fashioned way when no digital assistant is available or desirable. And the backlight is subtle and, should I say, beautiful. This smart switch easily beat all the other ones I have owned, with maybe the exception of the Hue one I mentioned before BUT it solves a problem the latter doesn’t, which is to make any light smart. And not only lights, but anything that can be turned on and off from a switch, such as ceiling fans, for example.I do recommend it and from my experience thus far, it deserves five stars.
