After all of the hype and good reviews for the camp dutch ovens, I was really disappointed with the quality of the 2 dutch ovens I received today, 11/12/19. I got them for a lower price when I saw it fall. No wonder. The rim of one pot is irregularly shaped, so that when you press the edge of the lid on one side, the lid pushes down and you can hear it close on that side. Then if you push down on edge of the lod of the opposite side, the other side pushes down. You can actually slide the lid around a bit once its one. Also, there were dents or marks on the surface on various spots both pots and both lids. As if it got hit with a lid lifter intentionally, or possibly accidentally. This passed quality control with chips/nicks in the seasoning and on the surface. ... While this may happen in use, I don’t like getting a damaged pot when ordering from Walmart.com as a new (not used or refurbished) product. The quality control is not anything close to what was described by reviewers. There are a lot of negative remarks about “made in China,†however, made in Indiana is not one but better than Chinese products I have seen. I’ve owned other Lodge pans and griddles, and they were great. So I was expecting equally good quality in a camp dutch oven.I’ll be returning these, even though they were bought at a lower price. If these 8-quarts were sold at a lower price than the 4-qts because of a batch of defects, that should have been disclosed. I almost gave one of these as Christmas gift. How awful it would have been to not have opened it and sorr of ruined someone’s gift with a lemon.Buyer beware, I guess. Now I have to repack and mail or drive to a Walmart and wait in the return line that is as slow as the U.S. post office. Maybe even slower.

Was going to get a 10" deep to go with my 10" shallow but decided on this 12" shallow. Happy i did. It's larger than i expected but is a great size. If i were to only own one oven, it would be this 12" shallow. Most recipes seem to call for a 12". I anticipate the 10" will now mostly be used for breads and the 12" will handle the main dishes.I own around a dozen pieces of cast iron cookware and they are all Lodge. Will continue to buy more Lodge as the collection grows.

I bought this for my wife to give me for Christmas. The bale handle was not attached. The instructions weren't right. I found a video of an unboxing and watched it. He got frustrated and ended up going to water pump pliers to make it work. They did't show him doing it. I fought with it and fought with it. I got it on, but it's not REALLY right. Not putting the bale on at the forge saved no space in the package. I suspect they got a bunch of misshaped bales and decided it should be the customer's problem. My last dutch oven was Chinese but I'd prefer to pay more to buy American. If the 14" deep oven on my wish list comes with a detached handle, I might just choose to back to the Chinese ovens. I went camping this last week to enjoy the Meteor shower away from the city lights and I needed up with 8 teenage kids (3 boys & 5 girls) Two of the girls are mine, the rest were their best friends, 1 boy was my son, and 1 was oldest daughter's boyfriend and the other was one daughter's friends little brother, whom is still a teenage, at 14 years old.I asked my oldest, and her boyfriend if they could stop by our local Wal-mart before heading out into Croatan National Forest primitative camping/trail area we always have camped and hiked at for the past 6 years, so they could pick up us up another, larger cast iron Dutch oven by Lodge. They did, and more food items I needed to cook for the extra added little brother, When they arrived. I asked my daughter, whom was laying down in the dark tent to open the box, and keep the cast iron Dutch oven in the tent with her so it would remain clean until I needed it after wood and coals got hol enough. Then I asked my son to bring me the cardboard box it came in to prevent me from wasting a fire starter or other means of starting fire in middle of no where and we got it going and it died down leaving red, blazing coals and wood.I then asked for the Dutch oven to be brought out to me and upon my daughter, whom Dutch oven weighs almost as much as she does, not really, but like me they are on the tinier side, skinner side and she barely weighs 112 lbs if wet! LOLAnyway, so without even thinking twice about it, or to actually using lantern to check the Lodge Cast iron Dutch oven prior to use, I reached over and grabbed the distilled water bottle so I could give it at least a once quick over before cooking our food in it and it seems to shoot out the side.I had my son turn on the Lantarn and bring above me and Low and behold I was NOT crazy, as the kids were telling me after I made comment that it must have hole in it to shoot out cooking oil onto my knee like it did.Once light was on, It was so open and clear to see going right down the edge of pot, both outside and inside cracked in almost precise locations.Gotta now find locate receipt my daughter and boyfriend used to purchase it, and PRAY they will refund it without the original box and if at all possible, refund my money so I can purchase another exact model at Walmart across town (as our wal-mart is sold out and has been for last week it seems.Anyway, I absolutely adore, love and think food tastes so much better when cooked in cast iron, on oven, in oven or over campfire. It is just authentic homemade filled with deliciousness no matter if it is simple eggs with cheese for breakfast or taco meat for Taco Bags like we were supposed to quit sitting over campfire because the humidity this past week was insane and THAT, camping in Mid August humid/heat in North Carolina -- DO NOT DO IT unless you absolutely HAVE to! It is a sweat filled, body odor infested, and well basically is just gross to even think about must actually smell it! Trust me.
Awesome piece of equipment. The seasoning that it came with is excellent. I already used it with coals from a fire in our fire pit to make the “Lazy Peach Cobbler” in the recipe booklet. It was excellent. The oven heats very evenly, and it’s not made in China so you know it’s straight American-made cast iron and not mystery metal. Like all my other Lodge products, it’s exactly as advertised. Buy it. Use it. Teach somebody how to use it. Then buy ‘em a new one and keep yours.
Nothing to dislike. This is a welcome addition to my outdoor campfire kitchen. I already bought the 12” Lodge Dutch oven (deep) on a visit to the Lodge factory. I added an 8” Dutch oven to cook bread, plus a standard 10” one. This 10” model (deep) is needed for cooking casseroles with coals. It’s a Lodge, made in South Pittsburgh, TN. USA all the way! These beauties really elevate the outdoor cooking experience. I also have the Lodge Dutch oven cook table. Very handy piece of kit.
This a beautiful Dutch oven but I can see reasons why some people wouldn't like it. It's HEAVY compared with stainless steel pots the same size. If you don't like heavy pots you'll hate this one. This pot has legs because it's meant to use over a camp fire. The legs will not stand on an oven rack. Don't even try. It will just tip over and make a mess in the bottom of your oven. It won't work over a stove eye either. The legs hold it too far above the heat. The box says pre-seasoned but everyone that is familiar with brand new cast iron knows it needs additional seasoning before use. I sand mine down to the metal and start from scratch and put on 6 coats, baking each coat for an hour. It's a lot of work but worth it. I can't wait to use this Dutch oven. It's great ... Recieved this camp dutch oven a few weeks ago. The box that it came was extremely stout. I was immediately impressed at first glance of this beautiful dutch oven. It is very well made & looks like it can hold up to the strongest of cooking tasks. I have not been able to use it yet due to the bad weather we are still having in Southern Idaho. I will be breaking it out once the weather gets better. You cant beat Lodge quality !
I love this little DO! It’s the perfect size for serving 1-3 people. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is the handle. Unlike my other DO’s, there’s some assembly required, and when you lift the oven by the handle, it tips the pot instead of gliding smoothly into place. Not safe at all with a hot pot full of food.
Been using one of these for over a decade. One of the joys of outdoor (or indoor) cooking. Limitless variety of recipes and variations. Breads, meat dishes, desert concoctions. On river trips I use campfire coals and my Condor shovel to adjust them. For car camping and back yard cooking charcoal briquettes provide a predictable and reliable heat source. Recent favorite is country style pork ribs with vegetables for a few hours ahhhh that fall of the bone goodness! I also have a bigger one and use it for whole chicken recipes. This size is what I end up using most often. Invest in a lid lifter, some large tongs, a small shovel and leather gloves for ease of use and safety it's worth it. Its a big IRON pot you cant hurt it! If it does get rusty just get out the steel wool or scrub it out with some salt and re season that baby! This is the campfire model with the legs and lid edges both necessary features. Check out the NYT bread recipe its a fantastic simple and delicious recipe for camping or your home oven. If you get into it the joys of Dutch Oven cooking are truly limitless. Not sure whats available today but years ago I got a carrying case made out of heavy Cordura with a handle and pocket. The bottom of the case had a piece of stiff plastic that doubled as a cutting board, great accessory. Also recently got a metal dutch oven cooking table for the back yard and festival camping gigs. Cooking outdoors in the back yard or the wilderness is so awesome you're juggling wind, heat, time and ingredients but I've never really failed. Things just seem to get softer and more delicious. On a recent cross country trip we would get a quality frozen pizza (oxymoron?) after the camp ground check in fire up some briquettes crack open a cold one and mmm. There's something about the iron and fire combo. As your skill level goes up you'll find it's a indispensable toy. Recently got an Iron Triangle (large size) stand which adds to the fun as I sometimes clean the oven by filling with water and boil away over an open camp fire, just like the pioneer days. Don't worry about a little rust on the lid just oil her up. You'll be the camp hero when you open the lid and the group is drawn in by the delicious wafting odors of a dump cake, biscuits or stew. I like the Lodge brand as it's made in the USA. Lots of Chinese ones out there that probably work just as well but these come from TN. And there's always that dividend check and supporting REI is cool to IMO.
