I bought this on Aug 9th and finally had a chance to use it this last week. The screen and features were great, but the transducer is the problem. My tripleshot transducer broke in half during normal use the second time I used it on the lake. It was a choppy wavy day on the lake, which I assume contributed to it snapping.I contacted Lowrance and they refuse to warranty it. They told me that I was welcome to buy a new transducer, but they would not send me a replacement. I can't recommend a product if the company won't stand behind it.

I bought this and it worked great for the first few months, then the sonar started to malfunction by showing scattered data and sometimes would lose the bottom signal. Completed all troubleshooting steps provided on Lowrance web site. Then called Lowrance Tech Support. Tech support person was not knowledgeable on my equipment based on them asking me to check features that my unit does not have. Ultimately did a soft reset and told me to put it on the water and check it again. It still didn't work right. Called tech support again which resulted in them deciding to send me a warranty replacement head unit. Multiple hours on the phone to and 2+ weeks later, I still don't have the replacement unit.I have no issue with Cabelas. I have had depth finders in the past but nothing this high tech! I think it is great for beginners. Easy to use and navigate. Also the "Auto" options, where the finder will set itself up is great until you can learn what manual settings you prefer. Also the preloaded maps are worth it!!! First trip out was eveing and into the night. Going up the resevoir and into the river I had the finder mark our trail. Heading back to the ramp in the early morning, the tempature had dropped and the fog on the water was EXTREMELY thick. At times visibility was 10ft or less. I was able to follow the trail we had saved going in, to get back out!!! Otherwise we would have had to wait for the fog to lift.Well worth the price in my opinion!! I know there are fancier ones out there ... MoreI have had depth finders in the past but nothing this high tech! I think it is great for beginners. Easy to use and navigate. By far easiest install than my previous Lowrance fishfinder-GPS. I have been installing these for 30 years. What I like most is the fact components on unit have evolved to smaller diameter and length of cables. Unit has just right features where I’m not trying to find (fumbling) options on screen/menu. Good price and love the larger screen. Can see very easy in bright sun conditions.
I love Lowrance products. However, this product has a severe limitation that makes it nearly useless for me. We all know that one of the great benefits of Lowrance products is the ability to create and share C-Map Genesis Live contour maps. This unit does that. No problem. I have spoken to three different Lowrance representatives and, apparently, what this unit cannot do is load Genesis Live data created by other Lowrance users. What that means for anyone who buys this unit is the following: You cannot go to the C-Map Genesis website and download Genesis Live maps that other users have created and load them into the unit. This seems completely crazy to me as the unit is fully capable of creating and reading (via the Genesis Live overlay option) the EXACT SAME FILE ... MoreI love Lowrance products. What that means for anyone who buys this unit is the following: You cannot go to the C-Map Genesis website and download Genesis Live maps that other users have created and load them into the unit. This seems completely crazy to me as the unit is fully capable of creating and reading (via the Genesis Live overlay option) the EXACT SAME FILE TYPES when creating a Genesis Live contour map. So, in short, the unit can create and read Genesis Live map data, but cannot load and read the exact same type of data created by other users. What does the mean for you? Let's assume you want to go to a water near you that has already been mapped on Genesis Live. Although your unit can create such maps and can read the data it created, it cannot load maps created by other users into the unit. Infinitely stupid. This seems to me to be an extremely short sighted exclusion of functionality on the part of Lowrance. Let me reiterate; the unit can create and read the same files require to create Genesis Live data but it cannot read/load the exact same file types created by other users. This means that you, the user, cannot load Genesis Live data into the unit for viewing when on waters that have been mapped by other users. This, for lack of a better word, is stupid. If all that you want to do is mark fish with the sonar/downscan/sidescan, then this unit is for you. If, however, you want to use the unit for Genesis Live overlays created by other users, which the unit can seemingly do, you are out of luck. If you want this functionality do not buy the X series Hook Reveal.
I was searching for a new fish finder to replace a 20 year old Hummingbird depth finder on my pontoon. I chose the Reveal 5 model because it was the largest size that would fit in the available space on the console of my pontoon. I searched the manufacturer's Web site and many others but could not find the length of the transducer cable specified anywhere. After much research I ordered the Reveal 5 model and figured I would find a transducer cable extension if necessary. Turns out the cable was 20' and I needed about 25' to get from the rear of a pontoon to the console. I was able to find a 10' extension cable elsewhere online.I also found a flush mount kit for the Reveal 5 and a flush mount gasket. I am very happy with how the installation turned out!As for the fish finder itself I am extremely happy with this 20 year upgrade in technology. Having GPS, sonar and down imaging all in one is terrific! I also bought the inland lakes model and the contour map for my lake is very detailed. After watching a few online videos to get acquainted with the operation of the Lowrance I would say the menus are very intuitive. My family and I already have some of our favorite fishing locations saved on the GPS. I would definitely recommend this fish finder to others that do not need all of the bells and whistles (like side imaging) but are looking for a good solid fish finder at a reasonable price.
The X model does not come with maps, which is stated, however…it has ZERO ability to add downloaded maps. They should make that feature available. At least you can “create” you own depth maps with a 2-32gb micro sd card. Also, the transducer cable is 20 feet. I have a 20 foot Grady White and the cable was about 3 feet too short. After going up the transom, down into the wiring tube, then up the helm console…I was about 3-4 feet short. Had to cut a brand new cable and splice a section in. WHY?? WHY can’t they make it 30 feet?? You can always coil up the extra, but if it’s too short, it’s a pain to lengthen it.
Big name like Lowrance and alot of advertised features that are difficult to use or impossible to get to work properly. Very disappointed overall. There are no instructions included, there is a quick guide on a card that just says to install transducer where you want it and turn unit on after plugging it in to a power source... Doesnt explain how to select or setup your transducer. Still cant find any information at all about what transducer I even have, I purchased the Splitshot model, but the transducer I have doesnt look anything at all like the one ive found on the internet. When I select the Splitshot transducer on the list, I get okish 2d graph? Alot of lines, everywhere. No matter how I change the sensitivity or any other setting, on auto or turned up/down all the way. The HD looks terrible. I see images on the internet of like photo like images of the bottom, grass, fish, and timber structure perfect. But for the life of me all I get is bluish colored blobs. Or whatever color palate I choose colored blobs. And the HD blobs dont match with the 2d blobs which makes me think im not even seeing anything below the boat. I went with Lowrance because I liked the genisis live ability but its alot more difficult to use, having to back up/use different buttons to navigate through it. Overall expected alot more compared to lower priced hummingbird and garmin units.
With a Lowrance Elite 7 HDI on my larger boat I decided to purchase the Hook Reveal 5 Split Shot for my smaller fishing boat. I have gone through 2 Humminbirds in recent years and have had enough of them. The Hook Reveal 5 has a similar layout and menu to the Elite, with some improvements given the differences in age. I was immediately impressed with the color resolution on the screens, it rivals my laptop except in bright sunshine. The installation instructions were pretty good so I had no problems there. I downloaded the user manual and was disappointed in the level of detail provided. While it provides a thorough list of the functions and options, there is no meaningful discussion of how to use them, or suggestions for your initial settings. This is fine if you are already conversant with fish finders, Lowrance in particular, but if you are new to these units you would struggle to go beyond very basic use of this very capable unit. Yes, I can go to YouTube and find all kinds of videos on using the machine but I would prefer to get my tutorials from Lowrance rather than some guy who may or may not be an expert shooting the video on his phone in a garage.
I bought the reveal 5 SS with inland maps to upgrade an older depth finder on my pontoon. My family and I have used it multiple times and are extremely pleased with it!I flush mounted the reveal on the console of my pontoon. I also purchased a flush mount kit and flush mount gasket to achieve a better install. My installation process was delayed a bit as I needed a transducer cable about 25' long to get from the back of a toon to the console. The unit comes with 20' transducer cable so I had to purchase the 10' extension. My only complaint is that I searched the Internet extensively to find the length of the included transducer cable in the specs but could not find such information anywhere I looked. As for the unit itself I am extremely happy with it. Using split screen to show the map as well as sonar or down imaging is very useful. The user interface for the main features is intuitive to use and after a few times using it I feel very comfortable with it. The reveal 5 has significantly improved our fishing experiences!
