Makita DGA517Z 18V Brushless 125mm Paddle Switch Angle Grinder
This 18V Makita angle grinder features a brushless motor, delivering greater power and maximising battery runtimes. The Makita DGA517Z has automatic torque drive, which adjusts speed and torque depending on the load. This increased efficiency automatically gives you high speed for lighter cuts and a lower speed with more torque in heavy-duty applications. Active Feedback Sensing Technology (AFT) prevents kickback by turning the motor off immediately should the wheel jam. A variable speed dial allows you to set the speed between 3,000 and 8,500rpm to suit various applications: cutting, grinding or sanding. XPT (eXtreme Protection Technology) protects the tool in outdoor applications or harsh environments, and gives greater protection against dust and moisture. A rubberised soft grip minimises vibration and increases comfort and control. The paddle switch is easy to operate, and features anti-restart preventing accidental start-up if the switch is engaged when inserting a battery. The soft start eliminates any sudden jolt on start-up. An electric brake stops the disc very quickly, making this powerful machine safer to use. The DGA517Z offers you mains performance in a cordless tool. This 125mm angle grinder scores highly for both efficiency and safety. This is a body only machine, without batteries and charger.

This cordless Makita angle grinder is solid and the paddle switch makes operation easy. Variable speed has added a whole new dimension to this tool- previously I only had cheap high speed grinders which were no good for sanding or polishing- the sandpaper was burnt straight away & polishing made the metal very hot and heat bloomed. Yes it uses batteries fast but well worth it for the cordless convenience.

Really useful for work in inclement weather, good cutting with thin metal cutting discs. You do need a few batteries available as it will deplete them fairly quickly especially the lower amp hour ones. The only gripe is the poor quality disc changing spanner supplied. The paddle switch on this model allows better control than the slide version.

The Angle grinder arrived exactly when it was supposed to, it was very well packaged and once opened, it was very easy to assemble and use. I bought the 125mm version but I'm convinced that if I could obtain the 100mm dust cover, I could use it safely with the existing discs that I have. I found the angle grinder easy to use, powerful, not too heavy and it provides far more freedom than the 240v device that I was using before.

Excellent grinder from Makita. Good being cordless when cutting away from house electrics. Very good price and arrived quickly.
In my opinion the paddle switch is easier, more precise and safer than the slider switch model and a 125mm disc over 115mm just gives you that extremely useful extra bit of cutting depth. I also find the brake helpful, just allows you to put the tool down without waiting for it to spin down. I have a 2000W 9" cutter and obvious this has nothing like that power, but it gets the job done and is so much easier and more convenient to use. In general it does what I would expect a Makita cordless tool to do.
Good but of kit, plenty powerful, and takes 115 and 125mm discs happily. With appropriate discs, it’s worked well for cutting and grinding steel, sanding wood and aluminium, and stripping paint.I would recommend getting the additional cutting guard for extra safety when using cut-off discs. The paddle switch makes it very safe. The catch is good enough to prevent it turning on accidentally when you pick it up, but easy enough to use with thick gloves. I would however recommend taking the battery out if you put it down for a few minutes, for added safety.
The grinder itself seems great given the few times I have used it since buying. The one negative I have for it was when trying to get off a thin metal cutting blade when I first fitted. The annoyingly short spanner and the pins on that spanner made removing a tight blade very hard, 3 grown men each had a go and struggled. We found that when very tight the mechanism would spin still even with the blade lock pressed. A good idea for future grinders would be to do what you do when changing a larger stihl saw blade where you put a metal pin into a hole in the machine that means you can put all your force into removing the locking bolt instead of trying to hold down a button and turn a spanner at the same time
Happy with grinder as was wanting one with paddle switch as all the other ones I have the switch near the motor it seems to fail. It was strange as it has a auto torque sensing but works. Does seem to go through my old 3AH batteries quick but so does my old grinder. It is bigger or should say longer than expected but its slimmer than my old grinder.Overall I am pleased i changed to it and it was an OK price
Having previously owned the brushed 100mm Angle Grinder for over 10 years, I decided this model would be an ideal upgrade! it was a wise decision, since the new model is 125mm, and has variable speed, which is brilliant for polishing and detaiuling. Unlike the old model, the new one also has a 14mm drive centre, which means standard brushes and pads will now screw on! It is slightly heavier but well balanced at the same time! All in all a quality you come to expect from Makita and worth every penny!
It's a big machine. Very pleased with it. Good battery life, loads of power, and I really love the paddle switch and variable speed. I do wish it would go slower than 3000rpm though. Brilliant as a sander when used with a nice flat pad. I'm actually gonna sell my Makita belt sander. My pad is 180mm, also from ebay.
