I bought this planer in July 2020 upon a friend's recommendation. Though I already had a collection of DeWalt cordless tools, this friend reckoned that the cordless planers didn’t use the standard 82 mm reversible tungsten carbide tipped blades, and so with minimal research, I bought this Makita corded model. I later discovered that the DeWalt cordless models do indeed use the standard blades, and so I recently bought one and it’s largely replaced the use of my Makita planer. By the way, I believe the only difference between the KP0800K and the KP0800 is that the former comes with a case.Don’t get me wrong though, this Makita is an effective planer. By the way, I believe the only difference between the KP0800K and the KP0800 is that the former comes with a case.Don’t get me wrong though, this Makita is an effective planer. I’ve used it extensively, mostly on hardwood. Much of that hardwood was salvaged, and so I would occasionally hit a nail that I’d missed spotting, and if that nail was intact as opposed to pretty rusty, it would generally cause the blade to snap into two or more pieces. The blade can still be used like this because it’s clamped into the planer, but there would usually be a groove across the blade edge, resulting in a ridge left on your timber after planing. So if you’re planing anything where you want a smooth finish, and you hit a nail, you’re generally going to have to replace the blades, or at least turn them around. Blade change-over is fairly quick and easy, requiring you to unscrew three bolts for each blade. I usually use my impact driver to do it faster. This planer has a maximum depth of 2.5 mm, which isn’t bad. It has sufficient power for most purposes. If you’re planing dense hardwood though, you’ll either have to go pretty slowly at maximum blade depth, or use a shallower blade depth. The planer is pretty compact, a reasonable sort of weight, and comfortable to hold and operate. I’ve been pleased with its performance and haven’t had any issues. In my experience its main downsides are that it’s quite loud, and that it has a cord, which makes it much more inconvenient to use than a corded planer. The cord just always seems to be getting in the way or getting caught on things. Still, I guess it’s handy to have around if I’m planing a large amount of timber or if I’m planning in two different locations at the same time to avoid carrying one planer back and forth.

The planer itself works great. But the "exhaust port" for the wood chips is a joke. Its a strange elliptical shape on a plastic attachment that connects with 1 screw. It can be replaced for a circular attachment for easy shop vac use at an absurd price of 30 dollars. For a piece of plastic. That cost them 30 cents to mold.Everything else: power, weight, blades, all good stuff.

This planer is lightweight so it is very easy to handle.. Depth of cut is also very simple to adjust and the motor has enough power to make planing fast. So fast in fact care must be taken to avoid removing more material than desired.. I used it recently to "true up" the ends of some table legs on the frames of tables I'd made for potting plants. These are 4x4 legs of doug fir so that meant trimming across the grain about a quarter of an inch to bring the tops of the legs in trim with the frames..NO PROBLEM! very fast and easy..
This planer was almost brand new and never used. Got a good deal and I happy with the deal. It replaces my Bosh planer with a discontinuing switch.
Easy to set and use especially for smaller jobs. Probably best used in a workshop environment as the cable can be a nuisance elsewhere. Look out for a small rotating wheel on the side next to the blade drum, it took bit of skin off my finger. Well up to Makita's normal good standards.
Purchased to trim internal doors before hanging. Did the job easily and without problems. Very Happy. Should be noted that without the vacuum attachment, wood chippings are ejected from the side over a large distance. Should be used outside, to avoid making a mess!
Words can not describe how well it works. The micro adjustments are great. I have and old craftsman's plane and their is no comparison. to this one. Should have bough this years ago I have a Makita impact drill and their tools are so much better then the DeWalt tools that i have. I bought a set of the HSS blades to use but the blades that are on it work great. If you need a power hand planer this is the one to buy. Thanks Dave:
Hand placement and pressure are key to getting a uniform surface on the wood. Initially, hand is kept to the front to keep front plate level on your wood. As you move planer forward and the blades engage the wood, keep moving forward slowly, and shift your weight to the rearward plate. Do this until your blades are no longer touching the wood. You'll have a uniform surface without any waves or gouges at the end of the run down the lengthy of your wood. Slow and steady pressure. The military kp0800 does a phenomenal job. Less sanding required also.
I was impressed with how well it cut and the ease of use. Only reason for the 4 stars is because it should come with the dust collection connection, had to order it separately
