Another great game for the 3DS. First party games tend to have a certain quality to them which is why they're hard to catch on sale. Mario games particularly have a certain charm. This remains true here. The obvious comparison is with Dream Team, the previous Mario RPG type game on the 3DS, and with Sticker Star, the previous PAPER Mario game on the 3DS. Dream team had some issues, it was kind of slow and very wordy. The tutorials were known to drag on. Sticker Star.. well it was a game that not many enjoyed for various reasons. None of that is present here. The Paper Mario aspect fits in well and suffers none of Sticker Stars problem and the tutorial issue from Dream Team has also been fixed. Fixes the overexplanation, demos, and absurdly difficult combo attacks of Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team entries, and avoids the boring, poorly-implemented sticker-based attacks of the last Paper Mario game, Sticker Star, by keeping the battles strictly M&L mode. Retains the humor the series has become known for though, and while Mario and Luigi's attacks are mostly identical, it's nice to see a whole different attack and equipment set for Paper Mario. Some new features like identifying the target of enemy attacks helps youngsters and average gamers, but can turned off for a greater challenge. I really enjoyed it though, certainly much more than either Dream Team or Sticker Star.

Let me counter any reviews who claim this game is underwhelming by saying that my experience with this game so far has been great. I go into this title having no experience with "Mario and Luigi" duo games, but am very familiar with the "Paper Mario" series. This game does a great job of giving homage to both versions, and really does a fantastic job of implementing the two worlds into one storyline that makes sense enough for a video game, and is engaging. The first time I played this game, I played for two hours straight. I kept thinking I'd take a break and found that I didn't want to - eventually my battery ran out on my 3DS and I had to quit.Additionally, this game makes great use of the 3DS controls - it's very intuitive that Mario, Paper Mario, and Luigi ... MoreLet me counter any reviews who claim this game is underwhelming by saying that my experience with this game so far has been great. Pick it up if you're looking for something to dive into.

It's not perfect, but Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam manages to retain the the enjoyability of the past Mario RPGs. While chasing Paper Toads gets repetitive and enemies sometimes litter the map more than you'd care for, the battle system is by far the best in the Mario & Luigi series. Having Paper Mario makes for some hilariously enjoyable attacks, while the Bros. They don't break the pace too badly, and the core gameplay is largely enjoyable with the wit and references to the Paper Mario universe. Any classic Mario fan will like this game.

Great Entry in the Mario & Luigi Franchise

Mario and Luigi Paper Jam is the latest in the Mario & Luigi series, and might be among my favorites of all the Mario RPGs, though fans thinking that this is a 'Paper Mario' game, might be disappointed. It is much more accurate to say that it is a Mario and Luigi game featuring paper Mario and paper characters.Pros:- Beautiful spritework style carried over from Dream Team- Easy to pick up, but offers expert challenges for veterans of the series- Gone are finicky gyro controls for some attacks, as well as forced tutorials, which are now restrained to a menu to look at your leisure- Satisfying Combat with interesting Battle-card Mechanic- Enjoyable writing and dialogueCons:- Some of the flashier attacks can drag on in length- Saving paper toads, a ... MoreMario and Luigi Paper Jam is the latest in the Mario & Luigi series, and might be among my favorites of all the Mario RPGs, though fans thinking that this is a 'Paper Mario' game, might be disappointed. It's a Mario and Luigi game. 'Nuff said.

Mario and Luigi Paper Jam is marketed as a crossover between the Mario and Luigi and Paper Mario series. In the sense that Mario and Luigi is essentially the successor to Paper Mario, that's accurate, but a better description would be, "It's a Mario and Luigi game with Paper Mario in it." All the typical Mario and Luigi series mechanics are here, just with the Y button for Paper Mario added to A and B for Mario and Luigi. I just wanted to correct any misconceptions, but that is in no way a bad thing. I've enjoyed the M&L series thus far, and I'm enjoying this one as well. Paper Mario is a cool addition, with some interesting abilities based on being, well, made of paper. I was a little nervous first buying this as I'm not too familiar with the Mario & Luigi series. I've played Bowsers Inside Story and loved it then Dream Team and hated it. Reviews I've read were very mixed on this some saying they loved it others saying it was boring. There are filler objectives like Paper Toad Hunts which can be very tedious but it's not so bad that it takes away from the game. The game can however be very challenging at times with boss battles but with things like battle assist and optional tutorials it can be overcome with enough practice.Overall it's a very basic turn based RPG that will give you around 30-40 hours of gameplay that's very funny with its humor and can provide a decent challenge for those who want it.

Solid Adventure That Lacks An Identity

Don't get me wrong, the game is a fantastic time killer, with great gameplay that oozes in similarities to previous entries in the series and adding Paper Mario's character is such a no brainer into the Mario & Luigi series, it makes you think: WHY DIDN'T THEY DO THIS SOONER?? Back on topic, the game controls very well and contains the humor you expect from the series. However, what it lacks is an identity. As a big fan of both the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series, the game lacks a certain soul that differentiates it from other entries from both series or even from the mainline Mario game series. This is both my first "Mario & Luigi" and "Paper Mario" game, and I'm enjoying it a lot. Most of the Mario Bros. characters are put to great use, although your party is only ever made up of three -- Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario. Nintendo makes up for this monotony by making the battle system a true joy to play, taking the classic JRPG team-based system and adding flourishes such as time-based button presses for accurate hits (critical hits are still randomly baked-in as "lucky hits"), Bros. Attacks (Mario & Luigi team up for one of many mini-game attacks), and Paper Mario's earth-shattering Trio Attack, which literally flattens the competition. The gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of Super Mario 3D Land if it were a "Metroidvania" game (just a loose comparison, there.) There's plenty of the requisite Nintendo charm present, and the artwork, animations, and dialogue are sure to bring plenty of smiles to your face. There's plenty more to like, but most of it is better left a surprise. I'll just say the Paper Mario crossover is put to good use throughout the entire game. There are only a few things I didn't like, such as the forced "rescue the Paper Toads" mini-games, which seem to combine all of the shortcomings of the controls and gameplay into one frustrating 5-15 minute segment at a time. Also, some of the Bros. Attacks are just too quirky to time to use reliably, which is a real shame, because Bros. Attacks are one of the shining elements of this game. Either way, neither of these downsides are really a big deal. There's plenty to like in this game for any Mario and/or RPG lover.

The worst entry in the Mario & Luigi series
16 September 2020

This is supposed to be a crossover, a huge celebration between the two series, but it's a letdown. Combat is good, but suffers from the needing to control 3 characters at the same time; getting hit or using emergency guard does not seem so punishable, and Paper Mario's special moves are painstakingly long to pull off with little damage reward. You're better off just using Bro. Moves.Field/Traversal is more expansive and open than previous entries, yet it feels so empty and contrived. A bulk of gameplay requires you to "save" Toads, which is a severe letdown to the previous entries' narrative-focused adventures. If you're looking for more action-RPG games, this isn't the one you should get.
