Another day, another attempt at Mario Party

My daughter asked for a new game for her 2DS so I was keeping an eye out for what was coming out. When I read about this, even I got excited! I've been a gamer all my life so Mario Party games are nothing new to me. This one is different though. 100 of the best of ALL the Mario Party games is just AMAZING! My daughter has been hooked! The ability to have 3 additional DS consoles share the same game is so convenient. She loves sharing with her friends and all of them play/compete together. If you have a 2DS or 3DS, this one is a MUST HAVE!

For years, I've been saying Nintendo should make a "Best Of Mario Party" game, and this didn't disappoint. Whereas each Mario Party has some minigames that you groan when you're forced to play them, each minigame here is fun to play. I was nervous about who was deciding what the "Best 10" games were from each Mario Party, but Nintendo had astounding insight as to which games should be included. I even felt there was quite a bit of thought that went into the chronology of the way the games were presented. I was nervous about who was deciding what the "Best 10" games were from each Mario Party, but Nintendo had astounding insight as to which games should be included. I even felt there was quite a bit of thought that went into the chronology of the way the games were presented. For instance, the Slot Car Derby game is positioned in as much of a critical spot in the single-player mode of this game as it was when it appeared in Mario Party 2. Another example is Bumper Balls, which is perhaps the quintessential example of a Mario Party mini-game, and is appropriately placed in the very last stretch of the single-player mode. Even Bowser's Big Blast is described as the "most vicious" mini-game, which is spot-on for anybody who remembers the strike of fear whenever this game would be chosen. There are two downsides to this game, the first being that there isn't any real game board to play on. There IS one basic game board where you chase stars (a la the N64 and Gamecube versions), but it's very primitive and doesn't offer much strategy. The only other downside to this game is it can't be played with friends, unless they also own a DS. This is a bummer as I am the only 30+ year-old loser I know who owns one, and I think it's illegal to walk up to minors in the park and ask if they want to play a game with me.There's a very simple remedy to both of these problems: put this game on the Switch. In fact, you could re-release the same exact game with the addition of the "best" game board from each of the 10 Mario Parties. This way, you can have the game board style of play that became so quickly beloved and was the design for Mario Party 1-8, and you can also integrate the linear gameboard that's available in Mario Party 9 and 10, which seems to be the new direction of the franchise.I do not own a Switch. I don't plan to because I own a Wii U and there is quite a bit of overlap between those two consoles. But if Mario Party Top 100 were brought to the Switch with some of the original game boards from the earlier Mario Party series, I would get one without hesitation.Cognizant of the fact that Nintendo is not going to take my feedback and do what I'm asking, I'll just say that this game is a real treat and I recommend it to anyone who has had fun with this series in the past. I can't even imagine how fun this would be with other people.

Decent On-The-Go Fun
17 October 2018

Not really a standard Mario Party game. It seems to have a focus more around the minigames than the party "board game" sort of style of the other Mario Party games. That's not a bad thing, though. In this hand-held version, it makes sense that you want it to be quick and simple to play. The multiplay compatibility with a single card (other 3DS owners can link up to your 3DS and play along, with only one game card!) is really a great feature. For quick fun on the go, this is a great option.

Full of minigames but no reason to play them
17 December 2017

Maybe half of the minigames in the collection are actual favorites of mine, of course, it depends from person to person. The single player minigame island lasts a few hours to 100% with only the luck games being the lowest point. After completing minigame island, there is barely anything to do. The three other modes are very limited. The gameboard is ok, but not worth playing more than twice. Another mode where you play five minigames and the first person to win three or has the most wins, wins. Decathlon is the last mode. It's a personal favorite of mine from Mario Party 5-7, and it's still fun, but once I got three of us playing, we ran into a few lag spikes, which weren't present when playing alone or with just two of us.

Fun but not as good as the main mario party games
28 November 2017

I am a huge Mario Party fan since I grew up with mario party 1-7, especially the n64 ones whose are my favorites. So I thought this should be a must buy. The thing is that those ncube pals dropped the ball changing too much the main mario party features. This basically focus on the minigames, which is supposed to be not bad at all, but the gameplay becomes boring and incompleted. I just needed to wait for mario party 11, which I expect to be done by Nintendo and no ncube. They should put more love, detail, online gameplay on this big seller franchise.

Fun party game that allows friends download play
19 January 2020

So, I left one star off because the board (board game play-style) has been removed - so is this really a Mario Party game? I know, this game is a collection of mini-games from 1-8. It allows for single player playthrough but I can't imagine anyone buying this game for that reason... the reason is to play with friends - and that's where this game thrives... especially because it allows for download play. Only one person needs to own the game and up to 3 other players can join in via download play.

If you only love the mini-games

Mario Party was a fantastic series and great party game to play with your friends and family. This compilation of the Top 100 Mario Party Mini-Games is a phenomenal idea and it really does compile some of the best that the series had to offer since the first game was released. I personally thought this game should have been made for and released on the Switch though. However, the game is quite shallow. I wasn't expecting a full-blown Mario Party game as it was only advertised as a compilation. I'm just stating that it's below average for a game. The mini-games are what make playing the boards fun and the boards are what give the mini-games purpose. If you take away one or the other, you have a somewhat pointless game to play. It's boring to play on these boards and only waste your time. You might as well just jump to the mini-games, which are the highlights and stars of the show. So if you just love playing the mini-games and hate the boards (you monsters), then this is the game for you! If you want the "party" in Mario Party, I suggest you dust off your old Nintendo consoles.

The simple fun of the past with a modern shine.

Im a huge fan of the old NES classics. The simple gameplay and fun pixelated graphics are like comfort food served up on an 8-bit platter. Its great that Nintendo was able to take these games and make them fun for the smartphone generation by cutting them up into bite sized, challenging chunks. The remix portions are cool, seeing familiar games in a different context, but for me the original game sections are just as fun - and by focusing on a few game moves or scenarios at a time, I find Im getting better at the original games themselves. I do find that the timing of jumps and moves are little slow from the original NES, which affects things like super Mario Bros, Golf and others. I wouldnt expect there so be controller lag on a Wii U + flat screen set up, but ... MoreIm a huge fan of the old NES classics. Not a terrible Mario Party but doesn't quite live up to the celebration established. Luckily Mario Party Superstars did the celebration right. So I recommend that one way more.
