On the gameplay side, however, is where Mario + Rabbids really shines. The weapon damage types and cover system are easy to pick up, and the difficulty ramps up in a way that continues to challenge without overwhelming you. As you upgrade your characters and their weapons, the characters' individual strengths start to shine through, but never in a way that felt like the game was pushing me to use a particular character, or be too attached to my existing party when I unlocked someone new. The individual battles within the campaign are usually short enough to be convenient to play in bite-size chunks, which worked well for me since I played most of this game on-the-go in handheld mode. I would definitely recommend it if you are a fan of games like Xcom and want a sort of lite version to play on-the-go, if you are looking for a good intro. to the genre, or if you just want to see a wacky Mario-inspired take on it.

This game came far out of left field. Mario and crew with guns? In a tactical rpg a la x-com or jagged alliance? What were the designers smoking when they thought of this? Nevertheless, it's executed flawlessly. No RNG frustrations, no save scumming necessary. Lots of little nods to various Mario lore and history. Challenging scenarios, solid skill progression where I never felt over nor under-powered, and great artwork. The plot is horribly contrived but who cares. My 3 year old was riveted with every battle and she'd be the one composing the team. Lastly, Rabbids came before Minions and it's a crime that Minions have become so popular.

Great add on to the full Mario v Rabbids game!

For the thick people posting 1 star reviews because it's not the full game... come on, it's obvious and that's why it says "DLC" That's on them, there is nothing wrong with this game. If you like Mario vs Rabbids, then you will LOVE this add-on. We're about 75% of the way through and have probably spent another 5-6 hours thus far. It will feel too short once we're done but for $15 I can't complain. They made some small improvements to gameplay and added some interesting features, e.g. Donkey Kong can throw enemies/bricks/colleagues ! which really do add to the game.Buy it! (As long as you have the actual game first.... duh)

Help me Plumber Mario, You're Our Only Hope

No Spoilers. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this title. I have liked Mario in the past, from Atari to Wii, although I never played M64, and I didnt own a Gamecube until somewhat recently (I didnt care for Sunshine, probably because I'm more fond of platformer Mario. I thought I'd try it, maybe beat it quickly and get it out of the way. I purchased Odyssey with the console (along with SMB and Mario Kart) as a bundle and haven't so much as played the other two yet. Which is silly, I know. Im in no rush, I said to myself. I just thought I'd focus on this one game for December, and it's been a treat. It's a lot of fun with a variety of challenges, some of which take a bit of trial and error. I just thought I'd focus on this one game for December, and it's been a treat. It's a lot of fun with a variety of challenges, some of which take a bit of trial and error. I would neither like it to be harder nor easier, theres a full range of challenges to keep me interested. I learned quickly that some challenges you encounter simply have to wait, and its satisfying to build your move skills and get to objectives later on when just days ago you thought it some were Impossible. The sheer variety of moves Mario can do is impressive, as well as the motion controls, so much slicker than the original Wii offered, and I still haven't quite mastered some of them. I did go on Youtube a couple of times for tips and tricks, but Ive generally not wanted help, as discovering the game all on its own terms is what makes it fun and memorable. The story is very familiar for Mario, The princess got herself kidnapped for lack of training a proper army after being kidnapped numerous times before. And its no surprise, her Kingdom' subjects are like happy go lucky little toys, meek and mild. Bowser has her once again, as his minions try to foil her rescue by the one man in the Universe who has any chance. Somehow, the Princess never got married all these years, shes a middle aged spinster, and her friend, Mario, is still a plumber and batchelor. And yet his 'stache hasnt grayed yet. Youll battle said minions, recooperating Moons to outfit your dirigible craft to reach further destinations, reconquering from Bowser one World after another on your quest to save her and restore order. I also like the mini games and the retro, 2D platformer bits you find along the way. Nintendo was very clever to include the 2D retro mini levels, and its interesting how they incorporate the 2D play into the maps. There's truly something for everyone in this game, supposing you've played Mario before. But even if you havent, youre in for a game that feels new and special. Now some who have said the game is all about collecting Moons arent wrong exactly. You need them, some of them any way, but they're also fun (and sometimes quite difficult) to collect. Essentially youre going to explore every nook and cranny in each World you travel to. And had the game makers not hidden items for you to find, you likely wouldn't see it all. But theres much more to Odyssey than collecting Moons and Coins. I feel theres quite a range of things to do, characters you encounter, moves to learn, games to play. Visually, this game is a blast, and I often admire their cartooning, animation, object surfaces, and depth of the levels. Last but not least, I find the music pretty cool and varied. Thats one flaw I would admit I wish Nintendo had addressed in the Switch, a Toslink connection so I can pipe audio to my surround sound headphones. Im using an aux cable, but so far, any which cable I use there is some hiss. I can live with it for now, but intend to improve the audio the headphone audio experience with a box (hdmi to hdmi/optical conversion). Some of the Worlds dont seem very large at first glance, but there tends to be much more than meets the eye. A few hours in and you'll see what I mean. Finally, I will say, Switch games seem to really hold their value. And when you're just getting a Switch and looking for titles, super deals seem to be few. That said, if you dont intend to keep every game forever, play and resell the ones you dont find great replay value in after a while and you'll probably find you can get most of your money back (and invest it into another game). I think thats wonderful. Coming from an Xbox gaming perspective, it wasnt usually too long before a game took a nosedive in value, and your local games reseller would offer you $5. But I just paid 60 a few months ago. Ouch! And that's all I have to say about Mario Odyssey. Happy gaming.

Mario XCOM

Probably the most common comparison made for this game. In case you are not familiar with XCOM or its gameplay style, essentially it's a turn based strategy game. Usually two teams, either controlled by two players, or in story mode - one player controlled team versus AI controlled team. The player can control his/her team selecting one character at a time, pointing where to move in the map (viewed from a high camera angle), choosing to then attack an enemy, or use character specific abilities - heal, increase defense, increase attack, or some other character unique power.Typically, the flow of the game is slow due to the individual team control and strategic approach, which makes this genre not as popular as shooter or action games. For those of us who enjoy ... MoreProbably the most common comparison made for this game. Story progresses in a linear open world style. Players can revisit the worlds and replay chapters for better scores. In between actual battle segments, the player can explore parts of the open world, solve basic puzzles to unlock collectible art or points currency for upgrades.Aside from strategic components, characters use megaman like arm-cannons to attack enemies. Family friendly animated violence. They can be acquired with in-game currency.Characters for the team can be chosen and upgraded, each with their unique abilities, such as Luigi being a sniper, Rabbid Peach a healer, and Rabbid Luigi a tech character. The roaster inspires strategy and experimentation that extends the replay value.Visuals are cartoon style like most Mario games, but in HD, and unique artistic approach from Ubisoft's team. Soundtrack is fantastic with epic and goofy orchestrated soundtrack that perfectly fits either exploration or battles. The game is a great addition to anyone with a nintendo switch who likes strategy games. It is fun and family friendly, offering versus and cooperative mode with options that allow for playing with kids, all the way to technically challenging settings for experienced players.Minor negatives for this near perfect game are that teams can only have 3 characters max, and that occasionally enemies are able to shoot your team from angles that are not physically possible (shot is clearly seen going through a wall). Though that happened only twice and didn't distract much from overall fun experience.

So I've seen gamplay on this game for years, but I wasn't sure on getting a Switch at the time. Then I got the OLED model a few weeks ago and I'm glad I was able to play this. This is very much my favorite 3D Mario platformer since Sunshine and I like how the gameplay and graphics are very polish. Cappy is my favorite companion buddy since F.L.U.D.D. from Sunshine as the concept of taking over other people and creatures. Sadly, much like F.L.U.D.D., Mario is kinda nerfed without Cappy as that there are certain moves he can't pull without a powerup, in this case the spinning attack like he could pull off in the Galaxy games. But it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Unexpected crossover, amazing results!

At first glance, this game would appear to be of dubious quality; the Rabbids franchise is polarizing to say the least, and Ubisoft is very hit and miss as a developer. However, Ubisoft manages to marry the best parts of the Mario franchise with the least annoying parts of the Rabbids franchise to make an incredible grid-based tactical RPG. This game is way more than "Mario and Rabbids... with guns!"; it sucks you into its gorgeous environments, its silly stories and sight gags, and its upgrade system. Being able to choose from a number of characters is great, though always having to have Mario plus one Rabbid in your three-person party is a bit limiting. This game absolutely packs enough content to be a $60 game, but Ubisoft has repeatedly had this game on sale for well under $20. Unless you're super-eager to play it right now, a discount will always be around the corner.

Unorthodox idea becoming a success!

If you were to look me in the face and say that a game mostly surrounding the Rabbids would be great, then I would think you were absolutely crazy, as the thought of mixing an unorthdox group of insane rabbit-like creatures and with Nintendo may seem to insane to be a true idea, but we were all wrong. Not only is the gameplay surprisingly addictive, but the visuals, characters, and soundtrack are all top notch. A few cons were Rabbid Peach's personality being that of an aggressive, stereotypical modern phone-obsessed teenage girl, and people pretty much dismissing how Mario felt during the "Phantom" moments. But in the end, if you really think about, the Toads, Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi, may be one of the first true friends, the Rabbids have. We've seen how others react to the Rabbids' chaotic antics in the past. Very few tolerated and befriended them, but the Mushroom Kingdom Residents befriending the Rabbids takes this up a notch. all fitting with an important lesson in not being afraid of what you don't understand.I actually recommend this game to those who haven't played it yet, because even if you're skeptical, like we all were before, don't be, as this game is a ton of fun and way better than it has any right to be.

good, different sort of Mario game

Enjoyable game. Very different gameplay style than any other type of Mario game, but I liked it. I hate how I didn't get Yoshi (my favorite Mario character) until very nearly the end of the game (so I didn't get much chance to use him), how you're forced to keep Mario on your team (which is annoying because you're only allowed three team members at once, which means you have to do more cycling to get to use all the other characters), and how you're forced to have at least one Rabbid on your team (so if you want to make a team of Mario, Luigi, and Peach, too bad). For me, this was a "play through the main story once and then give it away" game. If you have someone else to play with, you might get more time out of it since it does have a co-op mode.

Love This Game! Honestly, The DLC Is So Good. The Game Also Has A Pretty Decent Story Along With Creative Combat. There are some puzzles to solve on the map and also challenges. The game was pretty hard at some points but I don't mind because as long as you buy good weapons and are smart about it, it's not too hard. Overall It Is Really Good. The length of the game is decent (especially counting the DLC). The only thing keeping this from 5 stars is the pricing, the game is good and all but I don't think 60$ is that worth it. (The DLC Price Is Reasonable IMO Though). The Rabbids Are Also Pretty Funny and The Difficulty Is Just Right. The Versus Mode and Buddydome Are Also Really Cool.
