I recently got the Master Lock No. 5400D Portable Lock Box for use when we’re out of town and a house sitter needs access to the home. We usually just give keys to our house sitters. But, I figure this approach, i.e., the key is always at the house, hanging on the door, vs. potentially getting lost in someone’s home (which happened in the past) is better. The lockbox is typical of those you’d see realtors using. It’s fairly large, to provide more storage room. The exterior measures 6.25 H x 3.25 W x 1.5 D. The interior compartment measures 1 H x 2&13/32 W x 1 D. The interior compartment is sized generously enough to fit 5 (possibly more) standard-sized house keys (keys with no oversized/padded key grippers) and/or a few access cards, depending on your use case. ... MoreI recently got the Master Lock No. 5400D Portable Lock Box for use when we’re out of town and a house sitter needs access to the home. Obviously, larger keys and/or keys with oversized/padded grip areas will mean fewer keys inside the storage compartment. The lockbox shackle (which will fit over most exterior door knobs and/or handles) is 1&13/32 L x 1&7/8 W x 13/32 Diameter. Realistically, the lockbox only serves as a theft deterrent and a convenience for those that know the combination. While “beefy,” it is not impenetrable. But, if someone really wants to get inside your home, they’ll find a way… key or no key.Inside the packaging you get the lockbox and easy-to-follow instructions. The lockbox is so easy to use that, short of the default combination needed to get into the storage compartment, which is already set out of the box… allowing you simply to open the housing, the instructions aren’t needed. However, if you do need the instructions, they’re well written and there for you.The lockbox housing is a sturdy metal with a vinyl coating, the latter to prevent scratching your door, door knob, etc. While I appreciate the coating, I know from experience with this coating that, over the years, the coating disintegrates and gets tacky (especially when continually exposed to the elements). The change takes a while, but it does occur. The four-digit combination pad is protected by a cover that slides up and down. The cover seems to stay in place (when covering the digit rollers) via friction… i.e., the pad slides up/over the rollers and you can “feel” the pad’s resistance as it slides over the roller area. This makes me wonder how long the friction will last and keep the cover securely over the rollers. Still, it’s a nice addition that adds an extra layer of protection for the rollers and the lock’s gears. The thumb-slip opener to the left of the rollers (used to open the faceplate and expose the storage compartment) is fairly easy to use once you input the correct digit combo. After engaging the opener, the faceplate falls forward easily and gives you access (both via slide mechanisms… the first next to the digit rollers, but on the reverse side… the next, next to the shackle at the top-right of the lock housing to, respectively, a) reset the four digit combination and b) open the lockbox shackle. Master Lock also built a safety mechanism into the lock that doesn’t let you close the faceplate without the shackle being first being fully inserted into the lockbox housing. Some might ask, “why?” I think it’s ingenious, as it protects the shackle and/or anything else from being damaged by the pointier side of the shackle. More importantly, it lessens the chance of you forgetting to fully engage the shackle in the lock’s housing… making sure that your keys are stored safely in a fully-locked lockbox. It must be said that, while well made, this lock box is not waterproof and is not made of water-resistant/rust-resistant materials. Because of this, the lock box is best used under an awning and/or hung on a door knob, etc. protected by a storm door or some other means of cover. If exposed to the elements long-term, and if not properly greased on occasion, to add a layer of protection/keep gears working as well as possible, the metal innards, and depending on the metal out of which your keys are made (and how long they sit in the box exposed to the elements) will rust. For my use case, i.e., placed on our exterior front-door doorknob, protected by a storm door, the lock will be protected and will serve us well, for a long time to come. So, worth purchasing? Absolutely. The Master Lock No. 5400D Portable Lock Box isn’t perfect. But, when cared for and used/stored properly, the lockbox definitely meets my needs and is an excellent solution to lessen the need to share house keys with house sitters and others. It’s built well, is easy to use, and is a solid four-star purchase all the way. So, if I like it… why not five stars? Five stars goes above and beyond what the manufacturer says a product will do. The Master Lock No. 5400D Portable Lock Box ticks all my boxes and meets my needs. It isn’t out saving kittens from trees. So, a solid four stars it is (which is great in my book). If looking for a lockbox to protect your keys/access cards, etc… while providing added convenience to those that need to enter your home, apartment, and so on… definitely consider the Master Lock No. 5400D Portable Lock Box. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I bought this today on the way to the beach. Changed the pin, tested it a few times. Everything was good. Put the key in, it was a very tight fit but it closed and locked. I went for a surf, came back to the car and it was jammed shut. I think it was because the key was in there. Was stuck barefoot in a wetsuit in the sun waiting for someone to come with my spare key for 2 hours, that was after borrowing a randoms phone. When I got home I had to use a Pry bar and a hammer to get my key out. I had the pin right, it works again so long as there's not anything in it. All I had in it was a single key.

We got this lock for only one reason, but it would work for any purpose, personal or commercial. We put it on our cabin door so now we don’t have to worry about forgetting a key or hiding one. Our children can get in when they need to and I don’t have to walk back to our car when I forget to pick up the key.It has a soft finish that will prevent the lock box from marring the door. The key tether is a must have, as I won’t be dropping the key. The tether is retractable so it takes care of itself as far storage and is long enough to easily reach either the knob lock or the dead bolt lock. We used one of these lock boxes several years ago. This one is an improvement with the way the combination is set. It feels much heavier. The tether is very nice. When trusted persons are expected and we will not be home, we hang it on the door knob. The rest of the time we leave the box in a hidden place for when we lock ourselves out. In those cases, the tether requires us to move the box to the door to use the key. That is a small inconvenience for being able to make sure the key is not lost. An alternative is to take the key off the tether to use it. The path from the hidden location of the lock box to the door has a spot where, if the key falls down, it will be a significant effort to retrieve it. We’ll keep it on the tether. The path from the hidden location of the lock box to the door has a spot where, if the key falls down, it will be a significant effort to retrieve it. We’ll keep it on the tether. Removing the lock box from its location is simple because of the design. We were recently thinking that the hiding place of an emergency key was vulnerable to being stolen even without the knowledge of the thief. This lock box is the solution to that issue. Now distant family members don’t need to keep a key.
It’s so easy for folks to put a key in their pocket by accident; I love this tether upgrade to my usual key lock case. I’ve always found Master Lock cases great for leaving a key out for neighbors coming to check on our home and pets while we’re out of town. I appreciate folks helping us out, but sometimes they forget put the key back in the lock box, which can create difficulty the next time someone comes. The tether self-retracts, so it’s simple to pull out, unlock the door, and it automatically returns to the case. The lock case is a nice sturdy build that can be quickly attached to the door handle. We have a screen door too, and the box is narrow enough that there is ample space to close the screen door when the box is attached to the main door.
I bought the Master Lock lock box to secure a spare set of keys should I misplace mine. This lock box has a fault where the front section is brittle enough to be prized off as evidenced by other reviews. Despite being placed in an area with plenty of other lock boxes, mine was targeted and the contents taken, requiring a $300 rekeying of the property.Lock boxes are secure when used with positive intent, but anyone with ill intent whose determined with be able to break in.
One of my contractors introduced me to this lock. He used it to let his subtrades into a property of mine. I have since bought one so I can work other contractors as well. I found this lockbox to be perfect to store keys to let them in. You can set your own code, and it can store up to 5 keys. I only used it for a few days, but it trust the weather proof features to hold up for most conditions. (But I'll have to see how it works in the extreme cold.) I like the way this lockbox allows you to access the keys and unlock the door without giving access to the person opening it. So, if your neighbor comes over to water the plants, they can’t take the key out of the lockbox and go make a copy of it, well at least not easily. Nor will they be able to take the key out and accidentally lock the key inside the house, the key stays within the lockbox on the door handle. It took me only seconds to read the directions and get it ready to go. Super simple to reset the combination from the default to one of your own, with thousands of combinations to choose from. One thing it doesn’t mention is that the key storage department in the center will not close or lock UNTIL you lock in the top handle. I think that is a good safety feature. It forces you to lock the top lock on the door handle first before the center key storage will lock.I truly appreciated the long cable over three feet long, that gives you enough of a reach to get the key to the door handle lock and a deadbolt lock and more. It can hold up to 5 keys inside.Heavy duty padlock with vinyl coating over the shackle keeps from scratching the door handle and padded to keep it from scratching or removing paint from the door as well. And the last thing that I was thankful for was the easy closing face over the key combination, keeping the elements out and less likely to get wet and rusty, and it keeps the keypad out of view.
THE GOOD: If you’re like me, this is a good way to keep keys for tractors, ATVs and other farm equipment mounted in a relatively secure place in your barn or shed, instead of hiding the keys on a nail, or in the chassis of the equipment. Note that I stated “relatively secure;” if you’re looking for something that is 100% theft-proof (if such a thing is possible) look elsewhere for something that bolts to, or is encased in, concrete. Others have stated that this key safe can be broken into with some determination. Let’s be realistic: A determined thief can break into just about anything, or simply hot wire or tow away the equipment without a key. But if you live in a relatively crime-free area and are simply interested in keeping the neighborhood kids from ... MoreTHE GOOD: If you’re like me, this is a good way to keep keys for tractors, ATVs and other farm equipment mounted in a relatively secure place in your barn or shed, instead of hiding the keys on a nail, or in the chassis of the equipment. Let’s be realistic: A determined thief can break into just about anything, or simply hot wire or tow away the equipment without a key. But if you live in a relatively crime-free area and are simply interested in keeping the neighborhood kids from “borrowing” your stuff for joy rides, this item fills the bill. For about the price of a spare key to one of my ATVs, it makes for a convenient spot where the family knows to return the keys when they’re done using a piece of equipment (unlike a random nail on a beam in the barn).THE BAD: So why did I only give this four stars? Because the Phillips mounting screw heads cam out and strip out too easily if you’re trying to drive them into a beam, even with properly sized pilot holes. C’mon, Master Lock, spare a few cents and give us some decent screws, or simply leave them out. I ended up using Torx deck screws, which worked far better. All in all, it’s a good solution for key storage, and better than my prior way of storing them.
We use these lockboxes regularly, and have one mounted by the front door permanently of our main house.
