If you ever played a metroid game, then you already know how it mostly plays. Gaining new abilities, exploring areas, getting powerups, fighting boss battles; the usual routine.Taking combat mechanics from 3DS' Metroid: Samus Returns, like free aim and parry, the controls feel familiar and allows for more control over Samus. I can see these mechanics in future metroid games going forward. An additional combat mechanic that I believe is new to the series is the slide, much like the slide in Megaman games. It allows you to slide into narrow spaces and transition smoothly into the morph ball form. This is very likely going to be in future metroid games as well.Runs at 60fps for a majority of the game, which is a treat, all while still looking beautiful at the same ... MoreIf you ever played a metroid game, then you already know how it mostly plays. Definitely one of the more difficult Metroid games, but the rock-solid gameplay, the inventive bosses, a forgiving retry system when you die, and actual heart-pounding chase sequences all add up to a wonderful experience. Samus near the midgame is as agile as she is in Smash. This game reminds me of that joy playing Metroid Fusion on the GBA. The story gets insane at the end and I love it. Normal difficulty I beat in about 7 hours with about 50 deaths. Second run through was 4 hours and 2 deaths. It is purely skill based, 10/10, worth every penny.

Absolutely amazing, worth the nearly two decade wait. Metroid Dread is the 5th main side scrolling Metroid game, a series about exploring a vast interconnected world, where you need to find new abilities to progress forward. As a follow-up on Metroid II's 3DS remake (Metroid Samus Returns), Dread expands the melee counter mechanic introduced in that game, now Samus can melee counter while running, in the air, on ledges, and even while sliding (a new mechanic to Metroid). The overall combat feels great and is the most expansive it's ever been in a side scrolling Metroid game. There's plenty of new abilities too, which makes maneuverability better than it's ever been, such as the phase shift, which allows Samus to dash forward and backward instantaneously. The story ... MoreAbsolutely amazing, worth the nearly two decade wait. It greatly expands upon the lore of the series too, specifically about the Chozo. Some of the scenes (which I won't spoil) gave me chills, they are that great. The music is very moody and atmospheric, and is almost entirely comprised on new compositions (as opposed to the series tradition of heavy use of remixes) which I felt was a great way to give Dread its own unique identity in the Metroid series.Overall, a 10/10 game, one of the best on the Switch. The Special Edition items are great, I really love the artbook which has art throughout the 2D series, as well as a large section of Dread concept art. The art cards are nice as well. I really love the steel book, it looks and feels nice.

The game, itself, is fantastic. As a longtime Metroid fan, I can't recommend it enough. Fast gameplay, good graphics, and very, very challenging. As for the items in the Special Edition... they're OK. The box art is nice (especially the back!) but the box, itself, is pretty flimsy and easy to damage. The Steelbook case is OK for people that want that sort of thing, but I like the normal case artwork just fine. The art book is very well-made, with a hardback cover, but the art inside is lacking. The art from the classic Metroid games is fantastic, but is very limited compared to the art for Dread. I'd say Dread's artwork takes up about 75% of the pages. I would have rather seen more classic artwork.Last but not least, the art cards are very impressive - probably ... MoreThe game, itself, is fantastic. They have a hologram finish and nice artwork, though they are blank of the back.Is the Special Edition worth it? In my opinion, no. But if you plan on displaying the box and art cards, it may be worth picking up. For the rest of us, just get the standard game.
Metroid fan here since the Super Nintendo. I gotta say, I wasn't expecting such fluid controls. The Metroid feel is just like the old days. Despite how old the series is, Nintendo kept it as retro-feeling as possible. The game is pretty hard, but fair. There's a lot of game overs for me, but I feel it's my fault for not memorizing all the button configurations very well. Because this game uses ALL buttons. I mostly play RPG games, so it's pretty tough having to use all 4 shoulder buttons -- especially on intense boss fights! The game is less than 15 hours, which is typical for these type of games. As a frugal person, I was waiting for a deal, and Walmart provided that. I got it for $20 cheaper. It's hard to get any lower than that for a first party Nintendo game.
Who doesn't appreciate a good 2D Metroid game? That's what you get here, plus a couple of new twists. In Metroid Dread, you'll explore the subterranean depths of the planet ZDR while avoiding the E.M.M.I. robots periodically. Samus can obtain her usual array of weapons and techniques over the course of the game (plus a couple new variations on past ones), but there's also a new counter melee attack which is essential for defeating certain enemies. As for the E.M.M.I. robots, they are a pain to avoid...but they only track you within the confines of their designated zones. Thankfully, you'll eventually obtain an Omega Cannon from each area's core to destroy the respective E.M.M.I. that haunts the region. Metroid Dread probably won't trump Super Metroid due to its nostalgia factor and timeless soundtrack, but it holds its own as a new take on the classic formula. The graphics are some of the nicest to ever grace the Switch, most areas are of a respectable size, and there's plenty of hidden items. After the mediocre Other M, it's nice to see Metroid return to its 2D roots!
This is an excellent Metroid game and is a great point for a new fan to learn about the franchise and provides enough solid gameplay and new features entertain fans who have played previous titles.Nintendo created a beautiful 2.5D world for Samus to explore. I absolutely love how well Dread nails the exploration. You need to explore to gain items to progress but you'll retrace your steps at times to progress. The world is alive and changes as you play. Just when the game starts to feel comfortable you're thrown into a boss fight, EMMI encounter or more difficult enemies make sure you remember that Samus is mortal. You will die a lot in this game, but Nintendo rewards diligent and perceptive players who learn from their mistakes. This is must-play for the diehard ... MoreThis is an excellent Metroid game and is a great point for a new fan to learn about the franchise and provides enough solid gameplay and new features entertain fans who have played previous titles.Nintendo created a beautiful 2.5D world for Samus to explore. It lives up the name of "Metroid 5" in my opinion. Metroid Dread follows up Fusion perfectly and is one of the most enjoyable platformers that I've played in years!
I am not a typical fan of this series, the first Metroid I ever played was Prime back on the gamecube so I wasnt jumping to buy this when it came out. I recently bought an 8bitdo controller for my switch and saw this on sale so I decided it would be a good title to test out this controller on. I can say with all honesty that this game has some of the tightest controlls of any game I've played going all the way to the NES for me. The developers nailed it, Samus controls and reacts instantaneously which is crucial for these types of games. The different button combos make it so that tight controls are a must and when you pull off a maneuver, it feels very satisfying. My only complaints so far are that yhr graphics dont look great ok a 55inch 4k TV, all the rough edges ... MoreI am not a typical fan of this series, the first Metroid I ever played was Prime back on the gamecube so I wasnt jumping to buy this when it came out. Whats more frustrating is that there will be no obvious sign for progressing. On one occasion I became stuck only to find out I needed to blast an innocuous wall to move forward. Overall though, a very near perfect game
Metroid Dread is a welcomed return for the series, and a worthy (if long-overdue) sequel to Metroid Fusion. It combines the tight, precise and responsive controls of Fusion with the intricate, multi-faceted level design of Super Metroid, and makes good use of the mechanics introduced in Samus Returns, while still offering new abilities for the player. The rewarding sense of progression Metroid games are known for is present and accounted for, complete with sequence-breaking options that allow players the freedom to obtain upgrades earlier than intended if they're skilled enough. The E.M.M.I's are this game's most threatening foe, and the sense of dread they invoke when chasing you harkens back to the Sa-X sequences in Fusion. You can't hurt them without the proper equipment, so making it past these killer machines adds a level of tension that should keep even the most seasoned Metroid fans on their toes, especially later on when they gain more abilities to use against you.The story in Metroid games are at their best when they're more subdued and non-intrusive, and while this game does have skippable cutscenes, there is little spoken dialogue outside of conversations with Samus' AI companion Adam. While some people may be weary of Adam's inclusion in this game, given his awful portrayal in Other M, this Adam functions much in the same way he did in Fusion. He's not there to place arbitrary restrictions on the player or ruin the plot, but rather serves as an advisor to Samus, informing her of her abilities, speculating on the nature of each threat encountered, and offering suggestions on what to do next. I won't go into too much detail with the story, since the game's fairly new, but it serves its purpose well and manages to further flesh out the lore of Metroid, and even answer some lingering questions.Visually, the game pushes the Switch's hardware to its limit without the framerate dipping below 60fps, which is impressive considering the art direction they chose. The only times this isn't the case are during cutscenes. So overall, the game is optimised quite well. The art direction is also on-point, and certain locals look very scenic and easy on the eye. E.M.M.I zones have a washed-out filter that gives the areas a clinical, lifeless atmosphere to them, made all the more eerie when you realise the danger you're in.The audio design also deserves praise for selling the impact of the on-screen action. The E.M.M.I sections are a highlight in this regard, as their beeping accompanied by eerie ambience sets the mood perfectly. All in all, Metroid Dread is a worthwhile new game in the series, and one of the best of 2021. If you own a Switch, and enjoy Metroidvanias in any capacity, this is a must-own. It's short but sweet, with no moments of padding or fluff springing to mind. This is the definition of quality-over-quantity.

I can't say enough how well crafted this game is.As far as the Special Edition, the art book is nice. I wish it would delve deeper into the lore of Metroid Dread but I sense that they were trying to avoid spoilers. The art is still really impressive though. The art cards are decent and the steelbook itself looks strikingly beautiful. I wish it had an end-label though. Whatever, 10/10, buy it.
