Mitsubishi Color Pencil Uni Colored Pencils 100 Colors Set

The best thing about the pencils is the box design and look of the pencils. They do not blend well at all.

I had purchased these over a year ago but returned because they were damaged in transit. I love Japanese pencils and wish they were more easily available in the US. I did a tremendous amount of research on Mitsubishi Pencil Company ( MPC) in an attempt to figure out whether all the pencils with their name were in fact from the same company. I had purchased a Uni Posca set of 36 from Blick after trying a few open stock which also had MPC as maker. They are absolutely wonderful, creamy and blend as well as Prismacolors. The packaging is also a bit unusal with three tins stacked holding 12 pencils each. I really like the packaging as well although I did remove them and put in soft sided case. Even with MPC listed under Uni Posca, I found these were from a different company or a different "arm" of a company. They were designed to compliment UniPosca markers. (It takes some doing but if you follow the trail and remember to check other countries besides the US when searching you can find a great article with artist examples under UniPosca/communities. These may be the same as the Mitsubishi Pencil Pericia which have a beautiful case and sell for a premiun price. This pencil however is a combination oil/wax per MPC. The pencils are dry and scracthy. They do hold a point well. The pencils are more like the Tombow Irojitens which I love but blend better.I have tried using Gamasol to blend, blender pencils, white pencils etc. Gamisol worked the best in getting multiple layers or colors to blend. As I can't find these anywhere including Japan as open stock where you can replace a single pencil, I will not repurchase. I will however contiue to use the case. It is without question the best part. While a bit fragile, mine came with the hinge off and it is held by a stiff plastic piece which I was able to get back on without snapping, I would recommend handling these very gently. The pencils themselves are beautiful and the color selection is good. I think the look of the case and pencil gives them higher ratings then they would otherwise recieve. For the money I would suggest Prismacolor, Faber Castell Polychromos Caran'D Ache Pablo sets which also come in a large number of colors. If you can get by with fewer pencils I would give the Uni Posca a try. You can always purchase just a few of these in your favorite colors from online web store to try them out before you invest in the large set. I highly recommend this. I have a bunch of Derwent Pencils and never ordered more than 4-5 from each category as I found I didn't care for them. *the exception being the studio which are second to Prismacolor Verithins when you need a pencil for fine detail. The first photo was done with Faber Castell Polychromos. The second was done with these pencils. I admit to giving up on the rest of the portrait when I just couldn't get the skin color to come anywhere near the quality (Fgured I would use remainder to try out some colors and just slapped them on!) I picked these two as examples because this is the skin tone that I just have so much trouble with which is unfortunate as these images are beautiful. The last was with the Japanese Holbeins which are super creamy but not recommended because of the cost and inability to obtain open stock replacement pencils without enormous difficulty. (Keey in mind this is a hobby, NOT an artist!)
