Motherboard ASRock J5040-ITX
ASRock J5040-ITX - powerful and reliable. Supports the modern HDMI 4K 60Hz graphics output specification. With the larger bandwidth and increased frame rate, the movement on your screen will be smoother and less blurry. Supports HEVC 10-bit decoding/encoding to provide a much improved video quality and video experience with higher bit depth. Pure Black PCB Appearance. The modern Sapphire Black PCB represents absolutely solid quality and adds a more mysterious touch to the motherboard. High-density glass fabric PCB design that reduces gaps between PCB layers to protect the motherboard from electrical shorts caused by moisture. Who says high quality audio is only available on high-end motherboards? ASRock used ELNA audio capacitors on mainstream and entry-level motherboards. Compared to traditional solid caps, the leakage current of ELNA audio caps is only 3 uA, which is key to significantly reducing noise levels and satisfying even the pickiest audiophiles. Some sensitive digital components on the motherboard are susceptible to voltage spikes. The excessive current can immediately cause your system to malfunction. ASRock Full Spike Protection incorporates several technologies to prevent your motherboard's components from being damaged by these unexpected voltage spikes.

Great low power option I've used to build a small NAS. Draws up to about 30W at max load with 2x 2TB SSD. Seems to be enough performance for a couple of Windows server core VMs and ~10 docker containers. Supports up to 32GB of memory despite specs saying 8GB, just might need trial and error with different DIMMS (the ones I happened to have spare worked fine).

Good HTPC CPU and GPU crippled by a mobo with frustratingly outdated specifications. Still giving this mobo 4 stars because the chip and graphics perform stellar and work superb for an HTPC...and I am glad I found it in stock at NewEgg and jumped before they ran out of stock again!!!

I have been using embedded motherboards for eons, mostly because of small form factor and very low power in the 8W to 15W range, but they become barely speedy enough with evolving WIN OS and web developers. Regardless of systems, WIN 10 background tasks will bring things to a crawl, especially with 8 GB RAM or less. I tried running Linux a year ago, but I can only get full file transfer speed & file share on the OS partition, limited to 60MBytes/s on other drives, and difficult to share them regardless of system. Note that J5040-ITX 8GB RAM WIN 10 memory diag test took 50mins to run, while the J4105B-ITX takes 40mins to complete with the same 2x4GB RAM sticks. Also the J5040-ITX have no problem running 12GB RAM, and passes WIN 10 memory diag test.

I've had the ASRock J5040-ITX motherboard since October 2020. Originally, I had 16gb of ram (2x8), but recently I wanted to use a large ram disk. I read at www dot mini-itx dot com that it could support 32gb (2x16), so I took a bit of a gamble and ordered 32gb. It works! I'm typing on it now with 32gb of ram. As for the cons, in my case none of them are deal breakers. Power supply incompatibilities: With no spinning HDDs attached, the motherboard draws too little power from my power supply, and, consequently, the on-board LAN port did not work. Once I added two HDDs and rebooted, the on-board LAN port started working. Strange, I know, but true. The motherboard lacks BIOS boot, but I have read that Intel forbids its newer CPUs from supporting legacy BIOS. So this is ... MoreI've had the ASRock J5040-ITX motherboard since October 2020. Once I added two HDDs and rebooted, the on-board LAN port started working. Strange, I know, but true. The motherboard lacks BIOS boot, but I have read that Intel forbids its newer CPUs from supporting legacy BIOS. So this is Intel's "fault", not ASRock's. When I connect my SATA Blu-ray drive to one of the four on-board SATA ports, the motherboard fails to boot. (It may also fail to POST, I cannot remember.) However, I have a 4-port SATA card in the PCIe slot. I switched the Blu-ray drive to the SATA card, and now the motherboard does boot. So, the ASRock J5040-ITX has some quirks and minor issues. But, as far as I can tell, ASRock is the only manufacturer making motherboards at this price point with reasonably new/powerful integrated CPUs. Despite the issues, I am very happy with the ASRock J5040-ITX. I hope ASRock continues to make similar boards with even newer Intel CPUs as they become available, as I definitely prefer low-cost, low-heat, low-noise computers.
I upgraded a headless Zoneminder system that was running on a J5005 to get a bit more umph. Load average seemed to go down by about 1/3 so that is good. (The J5005 NUC is now a MythTV frontend.) I also upgraded a MythTV frontend that had been running a J1009. The J1009 worked fine but was limited to 1080p. The J5040 boots in less time and also does 4K. Like the J5005, the J5040 loaded Ubuntu 20.04 with no issues. Everything just works. Also like the J5005 the J5040 has no problem handling 2 8GB DIMMs and providing 16GB (minus a bit for the video mem) for the OS despite Intel and ASRock both saying 8GB max total memory. (I suspect it may actually be 8GB is the max capacity of a stick but that's not what they say.) I wouldn't buy one to replace a J5005 unless you were planning on buying another J5005 anyway in which case you just buy this.
A wonderful little board, but (seemingly) plagued by QA issues since I've had to send most of mine back. I bought these to use as low-powered nodes for kubernets and they work wonderfully for that. If you have the time to debug issues and wait for RMAs, this could be a great unit for you. I will probably replace these with another product rather than wait for stock.
I must sound disappointed in this ASRock J5040 board - but not really. Maybe just a little. But I wanted to build quality as inexpensive as possible - I had to ignore my desire for a maximum of 10 - 12 storage devices (8 SATA RAID card on a PCIe 2 x 1????), one or two NVME mSATA capability and increased PCIe throughput. I guess I'm wanting a 4-6 hundred dollar board with an additional multi-core CPU & passive heat sink thrown in for a bargain! Yep, that is what would be ideal! This J5040 is not quite that capable and certainly is not as expensive as those capabilities would cost! But it is a hard working board and as I can afford it, I will definitely move to a larger PCIe 2.0 x1 SAS RAID card....I'm running off of a 2 SATA add-on card right now.I know it sounds ... MoreI must sound disappointed in this ASRock J5040 board - but not really. Maybe by the time I can afford a newer build for a server, I'll have the money to buy a 2-4 GLAN board and have SAS connections on the motherboard to start with! But right now I just want to have an established back-up for the family's files, our media, and my son's games running in house. This ASRock J5040 fits that bill pretty darn well - it isn't perfect, but it is one heck of a board for the price!
Nothing but problems with this MB from the start. Issues booting then HDMI blanking. Tried 2 different sets of QVL RAM before I gave up. Untold hours trying to troubleshoot and then go to ASRock's site to start an RMA and they point back to the seller. Don't think I'll be using their MBs ever again.
I upgraded my HTPC with this motherboard, a 2TB SSD, and a fanless power supply to make a 0dB unit with no moving parts. Xubuntu 20.04 installed without a hitch. MythTV works perfectly. Restart takes about 30 seconds. It was worth the wait.
I've had two of these boards for a few months now. Both are running as Debian Xen dom0's. One has 16GB of memory, the second has 12GB. Both have been working very well, each running half a dozen Debian VMs. They run very cool, each server consuming around 15-20 watts at full load. I do wish that they had a faster pcie slot though; I only need one SATA port so would have been more than willing to give up the extra onboard SATA controller.
