The Neumann KM 184 Small Diaphram Cardioid Microphone has become the classic high-quality miniature microphone. The pressure gradient transducer used in the KM 184 features very smooth frequency response not only for the 0 axis, but also for lateral (off-axis) sound incidence. In typical usage, there is no coloration of sound over a wide pickup angle. Although the KM 184 has the same capsule as the KM 84, the microphone differs slightly on the 0 frequency response: The KM 184 has a gentle rise at about 9 k Hz (which brings out the sizzle in cymbals), a characteristic that was introduced very successfully with the KM 140. The result is a tonal balance that is fresher and livelier when compared to the KM 84 with its flat frequency response in that band. This difference was achieved with just a slight change of the capsule's rear opening, and is not due to resonances. With the same transformerless circuitry as is used in the KM 100 system, the KM 184 has excellent technical specifications. Compared to the KM 84 the dynamic range of the KM 184 increased by 24 d B mainly through the reduction of self-noise level to only 22 d B (Ccir) and an increased sound pressure handling capability of up to 138 d B. The KM 184 mic will operate without any problems, even if the input of following equipment happens to be unbalanced, for example as in some DAT recorders. The output is balanced and phantom (48V) powered. The KM 184 is a good economical alternative choice for users looking for a high-quality miniature microphone. You don't have to give up the electroacoustic features you expect from a Neumann microphone!

Best choice for matched pair recording

I recently installed a stereo pair of these mics on a grand piano for recording purposes. I was absolutely blown away by the quality of sound they delivered. The KM184 makes the recording sound like I am sitting in the same room as the piano. It has a very smooth response across the entire spectrum, and with the right placement you can achieve the perfect balance to make a piano sound better than you ever could have imagined, with crisp tone and no discernible hammer noise at all. Whether you are testing the waters of recording or if you are a seasoned veteran in the field, this is definitely the microphone to use if quality is of any concern.

These mics sound fantastic on acoustic guitar, percussion and, to my pleasant surprise, vocals, too. Neumann really are special. Absolutely worth every penny, and they won’t be my last Neumanns. Hope to be back for a U87 before long.

Great legendary budget microphone. Clarity and balance is good enough.Good companion with a U87 when you record cello, or Dpa pencils when you track a small choir.

The best small diaphragm condenser
30 November 2023

Overall:I mainly use this mic for recording acoustic guitars/instruments and it is very difficult to find a placement for this mic that sounds bad. Yet it picks up so much detail and has incredible frequency range. Did a shoot out with a few others and while this one is a more expensive option you certainly get what you pay for. Hi-fi sound in spades.

Worth the hype!
5 July 2024

I purchased this specifically for recording acoustic guitar and I only regret not being able to afford a matched pair. I first tested this mic on its own and then as a spaced pair with an AT4033. I love my 4033 and have had okay results from it but I always thought it was something I was doing wrong because it's supposed to be a good choice for acoustic guitar as well as vocals. But with the KM 184 I only needed to move it around the fit my needs. For loud strumming the typical 12th freet was a good fit. When I did a lead part I aimed the 4033 at the bridge and the Neumann 184 towards the neck and body joint and this is magical! I've read other reviews that said it's a secret weapon for recording a drums as well. I didn't use the windscreen so I don't know how effective it is or what the difference in sound is. The only other negatives I've read have been that these are not as good as the original ones. Those go for a few thousand dollars a piece so I mean 😅

Basically perfection in a microphone for recording classical guitar. Such low room noise from the east without needing to use any special preamps. Check the quality of this simple recording… https://open.spotify.com/album/6H24l6vYDPkZekK0IsYCAt?si=_QQuC0vaTyG1dEz1ChznIA

[Rewarded Review] High quality

I'm a professional classical guitarist and these mics (like the other km 184 mics I have used) are top quality with excellent sound reproduction. As classical guitarists will tell you, recording a good classical guitar sound is difficult. These mics are an important part of the recording chain (the others being excellent cables, good preamps and ad da converters).

[Rewarded Review] Superb live concert piano mic
27 December 2022

I bought the KM 184s to do slight reinforcement of a solo piano concert in a small concert hall, if needed. So glad I did! I went with the KM 184 because it was a favorite of the professional pianist, for both recording and live. Used just one, positioned at the crook of the lid on high stick. With very minor amplification, it rounded out the sound perfectly. Without doing an A/B test you probably wouldn't even notice it, but it improved the performance perfectly and unobtrusively. Looking forward to putting these to more use!
