Wonderful f1.4 Nikon lens with aperture control on the lens so works well with both digital and film cameras. I use it with my D750 and F4 cameras for portraits and street shooting. Highly recommended if you can get one in good condition.

I'm an ex-Pentax user and only late in my Pentax experience I acquired an SMC-A* 85mm f/1.4. Sadly I haven't used it much but I got a lot of use out of the truly excellent SMC-M 85mm f/2. This lens makes an interesting comparison. OK, it's auto-focus, not manual, so that makes a difference, but the size differential is staggering - 77mm filter thread as against the Pentax's 67mm. Do the maths - 85mm at f/1.4 needs to be at least 60.7mm across (60.7*1.4 = 85). So the Pentax isn't too excessive at 67mm - but 77mm? It's huge! So it's interesting to see the favourable review of its size as against the Canon f/1.2 version. It's all relative, folks. This lens also has a fearsome reputation and my limited experience so far doesn't contradict any of that. I do wonder though whether my passion for the f/1.4 version was wise as the f/1.8 version looks much smaller and neater, for only just over half a stop of speed. There is now of course the AF-S version, available at twice the price of a second-hand AF-D version. I'm OK with the AF-D - autofocus speed on a portrait lens doesn't matter too much and I MUCH prefer having an aperture ring for when I use this on my FM. And half the price - what's not to like?

A classic lens capable of beautiful images.

The first thing you notice with this lens is the great chunk of glass that makes up the front element. It is simply awesome. The lens is also quite heavy but this is really easy to live with when you see the results of this beautiful lens. It is tack sharp from corner to corner. You read reviews that describe the bokeh and the variations at this or that f stop. What really matters is the image that you capture and whether it is someting that for you is special. If you ever get the chance to own this lens do yourself a favour.

Nothing can beat this lens in bokeh. At 1.4 it's like water paint. Till 2.8 its almost same. Lot of light in camera. Don't need to carry heavy lens for bokeh. On my Nikon d3 its like a kind if partnership. People are respecting more. Confidence doubles up with this lend

Awesome . . . but only with AF Fine Tune
12 April 2010

I love prime lenses and this one is no exception. Shooting wide open on a D700 or D3s opens up a lot of possibilities in low light. Reasonably sharp stopped down a bit, and really sharp at F8 - 11; focal length is nice for candid portraits and general walk-around use, although it's tough to beat the 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 in that department. My only issue was that my copy had a front focusing problem. Used LensAlign to calibrate and made a +10 adjustment on the AF Fine Tune; it is spot on now and has incredible focus wide open. I may send it in someday before my warranty expires, but the AF Fine Tune did the trick. Overall, besides the front focusing issue with my copy, I really like this lens.

Best portrait, fast lens in the Nikkor lens line.
8 March 2013

This is the finest portrait lens ever made by Nikon, the backgrounds are no issue at all since you can shot head shots from three feet at f1.4 with soft paint like effects that you cannot get with any other lens. Low light is a thing of the past with f1.4 and the optics are razor sharp. Wish I could afford the newest G lens but I also like the fact that this lens still gives you the f stops barrel for compatibility with older bodies. Sorry, I can not find a negative angle, other than price, but at 800 to 1100 dollars used at eBay it is a blast of a deal.

Better portaiture
24 November 2016

Should have bought this lens 15 years ago, images are just so much better than slower fstop lenses of equivalent length. It has a beautiful rendering, subject is imaged sharply and then just impressive blurring of the background which result in a pleasing 3D effect. Built like a tank, will still be working in 30 years time.

Great for portraits

The 85mm f1.4 on a full frame camera is my favourite lens. I love how, when set to a wide apperture, it throws the background out of focus and makes the subject stand out. It also produces great colours and light in the picture. However, I would only use this lens when photographing one person. Why? Two reasons. Firstly, in my opinion, the lens is a little on the slow side when it comes to focusing. How slow? Well it's not a problem when the subject is fairly stationary, but when there is a lot of movement. especially towards the camera, the lens hunts resulting in missed shots. Secondly, the large apperture is counter productive when photographing a couple of people (or more) together. Well it's not a problem when the subject is fairly stationary, but when there is a lot of movement. especially towards the camera, the lens hunts resulting in missed shots. Secondly, the large apperture is counter productive when photographing a couple of people (or more) together. The depth of field is so shallow, one of them will be out of focus if they are not in the same plane. The advantage of the wide apperture is lost in this instance and it would be better to use an apperture set to around f5.6. I think it would be better for this situation to use a zoom. it focuses faster and is just as sharp at this apperture. Using a wide apperture (f1.4 - 1.8) requires good focusing technique. The lens is very sharp, even wide open, but it is so easy to unintentionally focus on the wrongs part of the face resulting in the features you wanted in focus being out of focus. For example, the lashes would be in sharp focus, but the eye itself is blurry. But when you do get the focus right , the lens produces a wonderful image. Many use this lens for its low light capability. I've used this indoors on a D3 set at a high iso, hand held, without a flash. This is great for capturing the atmosphere without a flash over powering the ambient light, and has also allowed me to not be noticed whilst taking pictures. For example, being discrete is important during wedding ceremonies where flash might not be alllowed during the service. I believe the main consideration about buying this lens, is really about whether to use a prime or a zoom. People say a prime helps you to consider your composition more carefully and you can zoom with your feet. I don't think this is always right. I have found there have been occassions when it has not always been possible or convenient to reposition myself to take a shot with a prime as long as the 85mm. Even when there is enough space to move, the moment and the spontaneity has been lost. I would recommend this lens for single portrait sessions shooting at a wide apperture. It will produce unique images having a beauty that I don't see being achieved with other lens. And the bokeh is popular with people. But for all other situations, I have to say, it has to be a zoom lens.

A lens that was introduced in I think mid 90s! On my D800 its absolutely awesome you will not regret buying this as long as you accept mild colour fringing coma honestly this is minor to the bokeh this m fk gives! Honestly just buy it! I own 300 f2.8 & other awesome lenses & this is a do it all lens! Just buy it!

This lens is sexy as hell on my D750. I love that I can use it as a small telephoto lens and it delivers some of my favorite portraits as well. It's versatile and fun to shoot with. It is definitely on the heavier side, but I tend to hold or wear crossbody vs just having it wreck my neck lol. I feel that I got this lens for an amazing price and I look forward to using it for years to come!
