Not a lot I can say that hasn't been said, but I will confirm what others have said. When I first took it out and tried it in the yard, it didn't seem to focus any faster than my 200-500 - which was one of the reasons I'd purchased this. I've concluded that the light wasn't good enough on that overcast late afternoon. I took it down to the lake where I like to shoot, and it was amazing! Fast focus, and frame-filling 600mm. When I looked at the shots on the computer, I was even more pleased. I've been happy with the sharpness of the 200-500, and just applied a little sharping in post processing, but these shots were absolutely sharp right out of the camera! Superb lens!Today I tried it with the 1.4 extender. Still pretty fast focus, and seems quite sharp - at least as sharp as the 200-500, and maybe even a little more so - and at 840mm!!!Another thing to add after 6 months of use: I have this attached to a D850, and _always_ shoot hand held. That's with a grip and extra battery on the D850. I'm a 150 pound 5'10, so you don't need to be muscle-bound to use this lens hand-held! I walk up to four miles with this thing (okay, walking is my exercise, so that part isn't unusual), but just carry it at my side with a Peak Design slide strap, and swing it up for shots! It's that easy to manage!

Although I have a variety of lens, I wanted to try this lens out for the Memorial Day weekend air show. This lens does not disappoint. Having the extra reach with a flip of the switch to enable the 1.4x teleconverter was great. This lens is also great if you're a plane spotter, which gives you versatility, quick focus and sharpness. If you haven't tried this lens out, I recommend it!

Investing in lenses of this type, you expect the lens to be first class. Indeed, it is, optically and in its build quality. I prefer this lens to the 600mm f4, which is another top class lens. I hand hold this lens and get tack sharp images as well as sometimes using a mono pod, those saying you cannot hand hold this lens are wrong, it's all in the technique. I use this lens on a D5 and D500. Well mainly the D500 as you get increased reach with the DX body over FX. Rent one of these lenses before considering investing your money, it's the best way to checking this lens is right for you. Wex do a fantastic rental service. Yes, you can field review the lens and read all the tech, but to get the feel and to see if this lens is right for your needs you have to get one out and use it. So I am not going to go into all the bits and bats about the lens. If you're seriously looking at spending this sort of money, you'll have had the sense to hire one out a few times before committing to owning one. I know it's been one of the very best buys I've made, plus earning money from your work is important in recouping some of the financial outlay for this and other top end lenses, unless you have a spare 11k stuffed in the back of your sofa.

I agonized over the decision to spend $10k on a lens and with a shaky index finger, pressed the order button. Have the Nikkor 200-500mm VR and the Tamron 150-600mm G2, but sometimes struggled with focus hunting on both. The 500mm f/4 E FL ED is so quick and tack sharp that I have doubled my keeper shots and the clarity and overall IQ is superior, especially when married to my D850. Yes, I gave up on my usual 3 to 4 Vegas trips ($8000 total per year) this year and returned my Tamron in time to recoup another $1300, so this lens only cost $700 (in my mind). This lens will hold it's value for many years to come as it basically sells for the same $10k it did when introduced 4 plus years ago. For me, this is the pinnacle of super primes other than the 600mm which I cannot handhold. Speaking of weight at only a tad over 6 pounds, this lens is so well balanced that I feel no more weight than my super zooms (200-500mm). Was a must have for wildlife and Birds-in-Flight and have no regrets. I now look forward to shooting every chance at the lagoon or beach and did not want to wait months later or settling for lesser quality. If you can make it happen, I highly recommend this top shelf lens to complete your arsenal.

I have been an internationally recognised bird photographer for over 20 years now, working in the tropical jungles of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, and i would say that this lens (and D850 (ISO!) combo!) makes my work at least 50% easier -The WEIGHT is a major deal, even though i didnt think it would make such a difference, it is so much easier to carry and use on the tripod in low-light rainforest conditions, plus the VR is incredible - a whole new ballgame after the previous lens!! Shooting at 1/100 hand held.. who of us older guys could even imagine that!Coupled with the weight deal is the BALANCE.. it just feels right!!Then the AF is just that much faster and exacting for small birds, and the way it works with the D850 is outrageous for tracking moving ... MoreI have been an internationally recognised bird photographer for over 20 years now, working in the tropical jungles of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, and i would say that this lens (and D850 (ISO!) combo!) makes my work at least 50% easier -The WEIGHT is a major deal, even though i didnt think it would make such a difference, it is so much easier to carry and use on the tripod in low-light rainforest conditions, plus the VR is incredible - a whole new ballgame after the previous lens!! This lens is very solid construction. While I've had limited opportunities to test with all the COVID-19 activities I do live in the woods and have had some opportunities to photograph some the resident birds for testing. I've been shooting mainly with the TC engaged and generally at, or near, the full range of 560 mm. What I'm seeing are very sharp photo's, yes you do get the vignetting, especially at 5.6. I also have a Sigma 150-600 Sport and from an auto focus perspective there's no comparison, the 180-400 is fast, accurate and so far I haven't had any of the hunting in low light like the Sigma. Sharpness wise once you get away from the center the 180-400 is way sharper, in the center I can't say I see that much difference, at least not with the TC engaged, but ... MoreThis lens is very solid construction. The 180-400 I think is actually easier to hand hold than the Sigma as well, it's more balanced since the lens doesn't extend out. I only used my Sigma on an African safari a couple of years ago but when I go again I'll be taking the Nikon. The Sigma will go up for sale shortly.

I bought this plate on recommendation from B&H website when I purchased my Nikon 180-400mm.Nice plate, beautiful craftsmanship, the prices is just right except it is not well balanced for my 180-400mm f4 attached to D850 with battery grip on GK Katana Professional Gimbal ,I didn't try it with any other Nikon camera body so probably balances better with other camera body !I ended up using the Jobu design , the link is below! This is not bad advertising for Kirk stuff, just a review of the item!I completely love Kirk stuff, I have tons of them and I enjoy using them full time.https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1300477-REG/Replacement_Foot_for_Select_Nikon_FL

So I have been looking at this lens for a while and chose to pull the trigger on a refirb. I am not going to review the lens as from a use point of view (how well photos come out / how heavy) rather the condition of the refirb and if it will suit your needs in this condition.1. Lens arrived in its case well packed with bubble wrap. Thank goodness as the box was absolutely beat to heck. Lens had no damage. Very fast shipping as usual.2. The overall condition of the case was great. I would say "almost new" with the only wear marks being on the insert. I was very happy about the condition of the bag and the soft lens cover. I initially thought a hard lens cover was included but it is not in the package deal here.3. I initially thought a hard lens cover was included but it is not in the package deal here.3. The lens exterior showed obvious signs of wear. Mine had a puncture mark on the rear collar that is quite visible. It appeared that the "VR" emblem was replaced with new as it was flawless compared to the rest of the exterior lens labeling. The rubber grip rings were white with a residue typical of rubber that sits a long time after cleaning with alcohol. I took a small amount of tire shine (low gloss) and they cleaned up nicely. the focus grip ring has a medium deep cut but did not impact performance. Foot appeared brand new (100% certain).4. Glass - absolutely PERFECT. Clear as a bell, clean, no scratches and no visible dirt within the layers of glass.5. Lens hood. Honestly a little disappointed here. Mine showed obvious signs of wear. several scratches and the mounting screw doesn't hold the hood on the lens very well without really wrenching down on it. It also appeared that the hood experienced a drop in its lifetime as it is not round but slight oval on one end.6. Functionality - Yup all good. Functions well. All buttons work and feels smooth.7. The filter insert gasket is not glued in very well. I took out the insert to check out the filter and the rubber gasket came off with it. It appeared the glue was not set yet. I used a very small amount of superglue on the gasket and then reinstalled the lens filter housing. This fixed the issue as I can take out the filter easily without the gasket coming with it.Hope this helps someone make a decision on a hefty purchase. Saving over $2k with the refirb deal was worth it in my opinion and in my case. Just be advised you are still buying a USED lens and to expect some minor cosmetic issues. The NIKON rebuild process ensured quality glass and focus...you will get that.

Been a Nikon shooter for 35 years. My Nikon bio: I own five film Nikon cameras. I own eleven Nikon D lenses. Own five F mount cameras, D80, D7200 ( converted to IR ), D800. two D 850's. Upgraded to Z mount. I own three Z bodies, Z50, Z 6 with FTZ adapter, and finally Z9 + FTZ2. The 600 AF-S f/4E FL ED VR has been a disappointment. When it is functional the images are superb by any standard. I compete in photo competitions, consistently scoring among the highest. My issue is quality of construction/design. If you're looking for one long lens that can do it all, this is it! I've used Nikon primes (400 2.8, 500 4, 600 4) as well as the earlier version (the 200-400), and this one blows the 200-400 out of the water. Sharpness, clarity, color, you name it, it excels.I've shot Major League Baseball for over 30 years, so I have a good feel as to what works well and what doesn't.The built-in 1.4 teleconverter is sharp, easy to use, and just adds to the overall positive experience when using this lens.\Pricey? Sure... But if you are looking for ONE lens that can do it all, this is it!
