Having used the much cheaper Nikkor 70-300mm for a few years, mainly for wildlife photos, I decided to upgrade. I got great results with the old lens, but the 80-400mm is just next level. On the Nikon site, reviewers have commented that you shouldn't even think about buying this lens - just order it. They were right. Great detail, and with the extra magnification (it's on a D7100 DX body, so effectively 120-600mm) I can capture subjects nicely from greater distances. It's big and heavy, and I'm still getting used to the different center of gravity, but I'm really happy with the photos I've taken since it arrived.

I use this lens in far less than ideal conditions. It is often hot and dusty. While not abused, they are worked hard. The focus is quick and reliable. Image quality is great. The only issue that I've had is that the zoom ring can get quite stiff after a few years of use. To be fair, that can be upwards of 100,000 shots, all outdoors in everything from pouring rain (covered as well as possible) to dust.

This lens seems to get mixed reviews. Mine is great, but maybe there is a lot of copy variation? Mine is tack sharp at short and medium distances, even with 1.4x iii teleconverter. At infinity focus it is acceptably sharp, but not quite as good as at short distances. Like all first party telephoto lenses, the triod foot is not Arca Swiss compatible (a major annoyance) so I had to buy the Kirk replacement collar. One quirk of this lens (even LensRentals confirms this) is that the autofocus in continuous mode is a bit jittery. The lens shakes while focus is engaged, though this does not affect focus performance or image quality. It just feels a bit weird (my E series lenses do not do this). It's not a fast aperture lens (f2.8 or f4) and it's not a super long ... MoreThis lens seems to get mixed reviews. (Hence my title great for what it is). It is a compact, easily hand-holdable telephoto with a good range and good sharpness. If that fits your needs, then I think you will like it as I do.

Somewhat heavier than I was expecting, but so is my D850. Sharp and responsive. Thought I might miss the "G"- removed functions, but haven't remembered to, yet. Haven't had it long enough to say its durable, (also don't plan on dropping it!). I appreciate the extended range over my old 80-200 f4 which hardly ever came off my old D300, and its so MUCH HANDIER than my 200-400mm F4 to reach out with. Overall: VERY NICE!
This is my go to lens for wildlife and nature photography. Very fast and maneuverable. It's also excellent for close-up shots! I sold my Nikon 200-500 for this lens, and have absolutely no regrets. Much sharper and faster, with a better range. I missed a lot of shots with he old 200 mm lower end range. Having a lower end at 80 mm is definitely a plus.
This lens is a beast. It provides impressively sharp picture quality while still being in a relatively transportable package. In daylight, the lens was plenty fast enough for action photography. Combined with its good range, this is a sweet setup for wildlife. Managed to grab a lot of photos of birds, whales, dolphins, and other animals on a recent trip. I had no issues carrying this on my D500 all day with a cross-body strap and hand-holding.
I bought this lens several years ago and mounted it on my Nikon D300. The I didn't use it much because I thought it wasn't sharp enough. In 2017 I bought a Nikon D850 and a 500mm f4G lens. As I gained experience with my 500 F4G I went back and tried the 80-400 lens with it mounted on the D850. The difference was amazing and this has been my primary lens for bird photography all winter. It is light enough to use for my walking around lens and image quality has been excellent. I will still use the 8.6 pound 500 lens for the warblers in the woods but I will be shooting from my mobile blindwhen I do that. Everything else will be with the 80-400 when I need to shoot handheld or need to walk around with it. It is one of my favorite lenses for close bird work and I use it ... MoreI bought this lens several years ago and mounted it on my Nikon D300. I have used this lens for about 3 months and I find it to be versatile, sharp and easily managed. It always seems to be in my bag. The AF is quiet and fast. Frankly, the resolution is better than I expected from a zoom. I put it on my D850 and have only taken it off once. For some reason, this lens and camera are a great match. I rarely use my tripod for wildlife with this lens. The VR is excellent. The weight and size are modest, so the lens is great for travel. The lens is sharp from 80 to 400mm. I am writing now because i just received yet another wow comment from a pro to a posted image. Additionally, I bought the Kirk collar and recommend it if it is within your budget. It is simply an addition that enhances your experience beyond the cost of it.
When I received my lens, I immediately checked it out. I called the company and said I saw a very tiny round chip on the edge of it along with the fact that it did not seem to have been cleaned well and looked a bit blurry. I have been very sick for the last month and have not had one chance to look at my photos from a trip from LA to Idaho yet. So, this is why I have not called you to review it. Any kind of refund at all? I'm sure when you saw the lens you knew just what I was talking about. Thanks
as said fantastic lens gorgeous pro quality images even with the Nikon 1.4x teleconverter attached very little to no image degradation by eye; with the converter you have an amazing 112-560 lens. This lens with and without the 1.4 converter is great for portraits, landscapes, wildlife and in most cases its weight is very portable for most people and certainly in a backpack or camera vest. my stated experience with this lens is by eye and enlargement ; not by any scientific measurements which I did first read prior to purchase and is what got my interest to buy. by the way put it on any compatible Nikon aps-c sensor camera like my d7100 and you have a 120-600 5.6; pretty neat without spending several thousands on a 600 f4 prime, superior prime heavy lens' faster but ... Moreas said fantastic lens gorgeous pro quality images even with the Nikon 1.4x teleconverter attached very little to no image degradation by eye; with the converter you have an amazing 112-560 lens. Larry at Adorama was extremely helpful and knowledgable and sold me the kit with three prooptic filters and for the diferrence in reasonable price extended drop and spill warranty. I can travel now with only two to three lenses; the 80-400 wi teleconverter; my 24-120 nikkor with my d810 and d7100 bodies and sometimes my 105 macro nikkor, and can now sell my 70-300 5.6; an older sigma 105 macro and others; I will keep my 70-200 2.8 and sometimes take it along depending.. My opinion Nikon has hit a grandslam with this lens worth every penny with Nikon's usa warranty . Its minimum focus distance is a few feet (to be expected) as is its 3 pound plus weight abiut the same weight as many carbon fiber tripods to support this camera with this lens weight ; portable for hikers/backpackers. Should Nikon come out with a next generation of this lens as a 8o-500mm 5.6 at about this price and certainly this quality and weight; I will be ione of the first to order. Last, I bought this lens instead of the 200-500 5.6 mm primarily for the wider focal range and from my initial research, build, quality glass and image quality and faster autofocus. I have absolutely no criticism of this lens or its intended design use and purpose; it is quality built, no zoom drag or droop and responsive autofocus; the only thing superior would likely be Nikon's 400, and 600mm primes if your a full time pro or just plain rich.
