A good travel lens

Good range and reach, fast and accurate focusing, no apparent edge fringing.Lightweight for the reach – would be easy to carry all day either on wrist or on a neck strap.Would be an excellent lens for a vacation in a city; would not recommend for a wildlife expedition – but that said, would be good for landscape shooting.Quiet focus, barrel does extend on zoom, but not on focus; close focus about 10 inches even at 120mm; close focus does not change as focal length is changed.I enjoy the updates that Nikon made to this lens versus my older 24-120 variable aperture lens.A good lens for traveling.I paired this lens with a Nikon D6.

I had been considering this Nikon 24-120mm f/4 lens since purchasing a Nikon Df a little over a year ago, and I've been monioring it on Nikon's refurbished products web site. Research performed online revealed generally high ratings for this lens, so it was a no-brainer to keep considering this for purchase. But the regular retail price even for a Nikon factory refurbished model is high, so I decided to wait for a killer deal from a reputable Nikon reseller. When I searched eBay recently I discovered prices for this refurbished lens that were significantly below Nikon's site, but I was hesitant to act under the theory that "if it seems to good to be true, it probably is." When I searched eBay recently I discovered prices for this refurbished lens that were significantly below Nikon's site, but I was hesitant to act under the theory that "if it seems to good to be true, it probably is." After checking prices on eBay regularly for the past three weeks, I located very reasonable prices offered by Buydig. My decision to purchase was triggered by an email I received from eBay over the weekend, offering an additional savings of $80 on a refurbished 24-120mm from Buydig. Of course I had read the reviews on eBay that warned about products shipped slowly, or arrived damaged or inoperable. But after receiving the email offering the additional savings, I placed my order. My order was entered on Saturday, and the lens was delivered to FedEx on Sunday. Subsequent tracking reports indicated the product was in transit on Monday, and was delivered on Tuesday. Upon arrival the outer package was in excellent condition, and the box inside containing the lens was packed identically to shipments of refurbished products I've purchased directly from Nikon's web site. My package excluded an instruction booklet, and front and rear lens caps -- while perfectly fine -- were not made by Nikon. I was delighted to find an official 90 day warranty issued by Nikon for my lens, same as I typically receive when I purchase refurbished lenses directly from Nikon. The overall condition of the lens seems perfect, with clean, clear glass and a new appearing exterior. The zoom is a tiny bit sticky, which I think will smooth-out over time with usage, and the focus and VR function appear to work similarly to my also refurbished Nikon 28-300mm lens. The lens has a US serial number, and the markings on the lens' exterior are clear and easy to read. I've taken over 100 pictures since opening the box, and images are clear, sharp and perfectly usable... even when taken indoors at night without a flash. Exterior shots taken from my window overlooking a typical New York City street are identical in overall quality to my Nikon 28-300 and close in quality to my Nikon 24-70 f/2.8. My plan is to keep this lens on my Nikon Df as my "go-to, general walkaround" lens, just as I keep the 28-300 on my other Nikon Df. The 24-120 is slightly lighter and shorter than my 28-300, but doesn't have the lens creep that's evident in the longer 28-300, and certainly won't be a problem to carry around for a day's worth of shooting. In a nutshell, my new refurbished 24-120mm completely meets my expectations. But my shopping experience with Buydig was exceptionally positive, and a real eye-opener. Based on my experience, I highly recommend both the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR as well as Buydig.

I'm also struggling with the focus accuracy, especially with moving subjects (my grandson in the park for instance), a high percentage of out of focus shots compared to my 24-70. After all said and done, you really have to weigh up the pro's and con's, ultimately this lens covers a big zoom range and opens to F4 in a relatively compact design. Admittedly, I've been spoilt with my 24-70 so I will just have to be more careful with composition, aperture, shutter and focus combinations when I use this lens. As the old saying goes....you pay your money and make your choice!

Great walk around lens

When I bought my Nikon D90, I also bought the 24-120 f3.5 - f5.6 Lens to replace my F2 AS - 80-200 zoom and get into the digital age. I soon found that prints from my digital files were not up to the quality of the ones from my film camera setup. When I had saved enough $$ I bought a D7100 and the newer 24-120 f4 zoom. Night and day difference in quality of prints - surpassing my film camera by a lot. The fixed f4 on the newer lens was also a special benefit. The older lens was soon gifted to a grandchild.I use the 24-120 f4 on all my Nikons. FX and DX and with the adapter I even use it on my Nikon 1 J4. It is very easy to use, great feel, silk movement of the focusing and zoom rings. It is well constructed. As an example, When hiking up at Lake Louise in Alberta, I dropped my camera as I slipped in some muddy part of the steep trail. It landed on a rocky surface and broke the front filter. I was at a loss as this was the only lens I had brought with me. to my delight, after wiping the mud and debris off the lend, it functioned perfectly. I very carefully finished braking out the rest of the broken filter ( do not recommend this procedure to the faint of heart) and had a fully functional/camera/lens for the rest of the week.I especially like the wide focal range, The 24 mm wide angle of the range allows for artistic compositions and for situations when I am limited as to how far back i can get from my subject. I like the great depth-of-field that the wide angle end of the lens has when doing landscape shots allowing foreground inclusion. The mid range is great for photographing people, full length potrate and gives a realistic view of the scene with little or no sceen manipulation from wide/telephoto lens.Although the longer telephoto portion of this lens is great on an FX for head shots and other moderate telephoto scenes, the lens comes on great on a DX camera like my D7100with its 1.5 x multiplier. Great for making distortion free head shots and for compressing distances and providing a more shallow depth of field. My Nikon 1J4 with it's adapter and this lens at 120 has a 35 mm equivalent of a 324 mm telephoto with an f4 aperture and quick auto-focusing. It gets some questions when around professionals, but I like it.With the quick focusing and special type glass - it is capable of producing great images coupled with the great VR on Nikon Cameras.I seldom use apertures smaller that f8, as my cameras will not auto focus beyond f8 and my eyesight is not great with the lens/camera in manual focus mode. Also, beyond f11 you will encounter increasing refraction distortion.I like Nikon's use of the 77mm filter size as most lenses today will use that size and there is a multitude of types /functions available. The lens is very quiet when focusing with my microphone not picking up any noise from the focusing mechanism when making movies.Bottom line. I really like the range adn multiple uses of thes well made lens. For me it handles most situation I encounter with finesse. I highly recommend it.Cons: wish it was a bit smaller, but it's weight gives good balance to my cameras.

When you think about it, zoom lenses were always about compromise. You trade a little image quality for the flexibility of being able to change your focal length 'on the fly' without removing the lens. Glad to say, those days are now gone. I got this in November and bought a D810, and the 'trinity' lens 14-24mm f/2.8 ultrawide to go with it. My first time out with it was at a harbour, and I shot a parked up fishing boat at the quayside, handheld. The sun was bright and strong, and at mid morning, it was off my right shoulder, fairly high up in the sky. When I opened the RAW file on my computer I was staggered. The detail in the fishing nets, the various bits of metal chandlery both fixed to the boat, and lying about on deck, the grain of the wood, every nut, bolt ... MoreWhen you think about it, zoom lenses were always about compromise. The detail in the fishing nets, the various bits of metal chandlery both fixed to the boat, and lying about on deck, the grain of the wood, every nut, bolt and rivet - all in perfect focus, no C/A fringing, just a beautiful result. In fine weather, cloudy bright etc, I cannot more highly urge you to use this lens. You must remember that it needs to be shot around f/8 for this quality to shine through your image. That is not always easy here in the UK (or most places these days) in dark cloud, pushed out to the long end near 120mm handheld, you risk camera shake.Resort to a tripod, switch off the VR, and you're back in the game. You can get away with auto ISO set on your camera, most will give you a good result at iso 800 these days. If you intend to enlarge to A3 or larger I would go for the tripod option. That said, in good weather, this thing just sings. I don't know if I am lucky and have a really good example of this lens, I hope they are all the same quality, and Nikon's QA is usually good, but this lens will see me through unless it gets stolen or broken.Fabulous on a D810, and that camera absolutely demands a top quality lens - anything less and you'll see the difference easily.Hope this helps.

So I have a Sigma 24-70 2.8 which I reviewed and it's brilliant but recently I've wished it had just a bit more on the zoom end. I was looking at the Nikon 24-120 f/4, as with everything I buy i read as many reviews as i could find. The problem I have and I don't think this will be exclusive to photography, is that the people who do a review say things that really have no real life bearing on the average buyer. I say this because I cannot afford the really madly priced pro lenses so I always look for a bargain priced mid range lens and when I read things like it's soft all over at f/4 or at the edge etc all I can think is where? how big are you zooming in to see this softness. Are you taking in to account that paying well over 500 quid for a lens means it's highly ... MoreSo I have a Sigma 24-70 2.8 which I reviewed and it's brilliant but recently I've wished it had just a bit more on the zoom end. Are you taking in to account that paying well over 500 quid for a lens means it's highly likely I'll be shooting raw and then EDITING THE IMAGE, so with a tweak here and there, there's no softness with this lens, I read it focuses slowly, what were you trying to focus on, a supersonic jet? It takes milliseconds to focus, it's accurate and it's sharp, that is, if you are an every day photographer to semi pro then ignore these pro reviews because to me, they are not talking about things that real world photographers could see until they blew the image up to billboard size. It's a brilliant lens, go and buy it.

I've been shooting people events with this lens for several years. It has never let me down. Tack sharp, excellent color & contrast. Recently I tried the 24-70mm f/2.8 VR zoom just to compare. I could not find any case where that lens made superior images. It costs twice as much. It's heavier. It wasn't as fast to bring up, compose and shoot as this smaller/lighter lens with it's longer range. For me there is no need to look further. If you'll be banging into other photographers on a news assignment or hiking through tropical humidity, get the 24-70 f/2.8 VR. It's probably more durable. But I'm retired. I take care of my gear. In this environment, the 24-120 f/4 can't be beat.

Very good, as long you figure out its limitations.

I needed a lens to get a single picture for a book project. I'd be photographing from a boat, from varying distances, hoping for the best. None of my lenses had image stabilization, or the right focal lengths, so I had to do some research. Everything pointed to this lens. I rented it for the day, and was impressed. The autofocus and image stabilization worked perfectly. I was in a small inflatable pontoon motorboat in the East River, shooting handheld with a d800, and had no issues at all with motion blur. The winning picture was shot at 86mm, f8, 1/160s. It's not quite as sharp as the other images in the project (made on a tripod, with more expensive lenses) but is more than good enough, and would look good printed 20x30 or so. A caveat is that the sharpness falls ... MoreI needed a lens to get a single picture for a book project. I'd be photographing from a boat, from varying distances, hoping for the best. A caveat is that the sharpness falls off quite a bit in the corners. This wasn't an issue for me-there was just sky there-but if you need a high degree of sharpness across the whole image field, this lens may not be the best choice. I owned the 24-70 f2.8 for a couple of years, and while this was not my favorite lens in the world, it definitely outperforms the 24-105 in corner-corner sharpness. Alas, it isn't stabilized, so would have been lousy on the boat. Overall, I think the 24-120 would be a brilliant lens for someone who likes to walk around with an all-purpose zoom (this is what all these other reviewers are saying ...). And it's good for people like me who have a specialized use that doesn't depend so much on corner sharpness. But in this case, maybe rent it.

Very happy with my 24-120 VR
8 April 2018

I purchased this lens as part of a kit together with a D850. I have to say I was really happy with this lens having used it for a few days and was both confused and concerned when I started to read professional reviews about the 24-120 that were really disparaging and critical. It was a relief when I realised that the reviews were talking about the older iteration of the lens, as I thought either I was going mad or I had by some stroke of luck received the swan out of a whole lot of ugly ducklings. I own a number of Nikon lenses including a 24-70 f2.8, 28-300 f3.5-5.6G and a 50 f1.4 and the reason I like the 24-120 so much is because it really allows me to use the camera much more. As beautiful as the 24-70 is (and there is no mistaking this) is just too heavy to really cart around as a travel/walkabout lens without it being a pain - so much so that I just tended to leave the camera at home. The 24-120, although nominally only 210g lighter makes a huge difference, to me at least. I have found its VR performance to be excellent and I can handhold all the way down to 1/30 without any shakiness (something I was worried about bearing in mind the MP of the D850 vs my previous D800). I'm no spring chicken either and I have neither the strength nor stamina that I used to have handholding a camera but I feel that this lens balances on the camera really well. I have not been disappointed with the lens' sharpness and would definitely recommend it to fellow Nikon users. It hasn't really come off the camera.
