I had one for year and never gave me a problem until I when mounted on high tri-pod and the wind blew it over, (had lens over 5 year and 100,000 photos) This used copy works well and I feel it will service me well in the years to come. The Nikon N90s was part of the sale. The back had some stickiness from worn out pad (this was easily removed. I bought this as a compact and convenient travel lens. It has a useful zoom range and it's generally sharp. VR works well - better than my old 70-200mm f2.8. Colour rendition is good. Build quality is adequate. This lens isn't IF, so grows as you zoom to 80mm. The main con is distortion - lots of barrel distortion at the wide end - and even more pincushion at the portrait end. Both are easily corrected in Lightroom or Photoshop.

Excellent Travel Lens with Excellent Vibration Reduction.

Light-weight lens ideal for travel. Not bulky compared to other zooms. Body is tough with a metal lens mount. Auto-focus hunts a little in low light condition, i.e. in dimly lighted rooms with lens aimed on a light colored-wall, thus, the 4-stars (or 4.5 stars). Otherwise, it is of great value, and the VR is a plus especially for night shots. I have taken sharp photos, hand-held, at 1/4s with VR on. Manual focus is great with very good damping. This lens replaces my previous light-weight travel lenses (28-200G 3.5-5.6D and 28-70/3.5-4.5D). Lens balances well with lightweight or professional bodies. I did not miss focal length in excess of 85mm. I switched to DX if I need anything longer than 85mm. The 24mm is a big plus for narrow streets, and other tight spots. ... MoreLight-weight lens ideal for travel. Not bulky compared to other zooms. Body is tough with a metal lens mount. Great lens for the money
18 April 2016

Got this lens from B&H before a trip after reading many reviews. Didn't have a lot of time to try it out and test it, but I liked its zoom range and thought it would be the right all-around lens for everyday use. Plus, I have another NIkkor VR zoom that has given me some great results with the VR function. I've been in Istanbul for the past week using the lens on a DX camera. When I brought the first few batches of images into Lightroom I was really impressed by the detail this lens captured. Some photographers prefer thorough technical analysis of a lens' performance, but for me, I've always relied on my eyeballs whether under a loupe in the 'way back' days before digital, or zoomed in with Photoshop or Lightroom today. And I have to say, this lens wowed me right ... MoreGot this lens from B&H before a trip after reading many reviews. And I have to say, this lens wowed me right out of the gate. Looking at images 1:1 in LR I was impressed with the lens' ability to distinctly capture separate hairs in a portrait, or the fine texture of a fabric, or fibers in a piece of fruit. Others have cited the lens' relative slowness wide open, but I try not to use most lenses wide open anyway so this doesn't really trouble me. Today's image sensors offer incredible ISO's with little compromise in quality so the only way this really comes into play is for photographers after creative use of shallow depth of field. Some have also had problems with the zoom ring but my copy turns smoothly without feeling 'loose'. I'm really happy so far with the results of this lens and am looking forward to using it on an FX camera in the future.

NIKON AF-S NIKKOR 24-85 mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR so good I bought it twice!!
8 December 2021

I had owned one of these lenses for about 6 years when I decided to upgrade to the heavier and supposedly better 24 - 70 lens. I took delivery of the 24 -70 and sold my old 24 - 85 lens. I have to say I was pretty disappointed so had to have a replacement, (hence this review). The 24 -70 delivers fantastic results but it is heavy and bulky, whereas the 24 - 85 is light and compact with slightly better reach. Anyway, on to my review of this lens, the NIKON AF-S NIKKOR 24-85 mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR. This lens is compact, light and has a good zoom range. This is a good all-round lens, not the fastest but certainly adequate to meet the demands of all but the most demanding professional photographer. I will be keeping the 24 - 70 lens but the NIKON AF-S NIKKOR 24-85 mm ... MoreI had owned one of these lenses for about 6 years when I decided to upgrade to the heavier and supposedly better 24 - 70 lens. This ain't a scalpel... this is a Swiss Army knife.

I bought this lens as a replacement for my 24-70. At first I was skeptical about it, especially since there are so many people that say this "isn't sharp". To my surprise this lens is very sharp! Yes it is a bit soft in the corners but nothing that you should be concerned about. If you are willing to pay 2x more go for the 24-70, but you honestly won't be getting much more... Trust me I owned it. The best photographers in the world don't care about absolute sharpness, and you should be using primers and not zooms if you do photography professionally. This lens is amazing in its own spectrum. Personally I find the extra 15mm much handier for walking around, and the macro feature is an incredible tool to have available. If you want better results for macro or 1:1 ... MoreI bought this lens as a replacement for my 24-70. If you want better results for macro or 1:1 reproduction then you should get a macro lens. I only gave it 4 stars because my complaint is that the zoom ring sticks... Construction overall is not like other D series lenses with metal and very precise controls. This is mostly plastic and the zoom feel is not there because it isn't smooth. This is my walk around/travel lens. It doesn't disappoint me. I'll carry this and a prime telephoto like my 135 DC or 180mm 2.8. If I travel I take this and a 50 1.8 for low light and a 105 ai-s for reach. Buy it!

This is a great lens... unless you are a professional

I purchased this lens when I switched from dx to fx. I had a Tamron 70-200 2.8 for fx but didn't have any fx wide-standard lenses. Got this lens for my d750 for an ok price. I don't know where to start with this lens... I have a love/hate relationship with it. I will first make my short, to-the-point statement about it: it is a decent alternative to the 24-70 2.8 if you don't want to buy a professional lens, but if you are a professional photographer/cinematographer, DO NOT GET THIS LENS. Prosumers, and ametuers alike will appreciate the decent bokeh balls this lens renders, as well as its light weight and versatile focal range. The vibration reduction does help when handholding with slow shutter speeds, but I almost always find myself worrying about motion blur in ... MoreI purchased this lens when I switched from dx to fx. Prosumers, and ametuers alike will appreciate the decent bokeh balls this lens renders, as well as its light weight and versatile focal range. The vibration reduction does help when handholding with slow shutter speeds, but I almost always find myself worrying about motion blur in my image moreso than camera shake when in low light areas. I will admit, I have gotten alot of nice images while using this lens. But as most experienced, professional photographers will tell you, it is the photographer that makes the image, not the gear. The gear is only supposed to help the photographer capture the desired image, and I will tell you this lens does the opposite of that! When shooting around 24-35mm, there is alot of distortion and makes the image appear quite funny-looking. Also a good note: if you want to use this for landscape photography, you can forget about that! The center sharpness is mediocre, but the side and corner rendition is horrid! At 24mm, the sides and corners distort, blur and are completely unsharp. I actually was unable to deliver certain photos taken at 24mm with this lens for an important job I did because you could not clearly see the subject in the pictures (which was located towards the bottom right corner of the frame). Now here is my biggest complaint which for any professional photographer is a deal-breaker. This is a variable-aperture lens, meaning when you zoom out wide to 24mm, the lens's iris has a maximum setting of f/3.5. As you zoom in towards 85mm, the aperture is quickly limited to f/4, then 4.5. Even though I hate shooting with variable-aperture lenses, whenever I do, I always keep the aperture at its largest constant setting for the entire zoom range. Meaning for this lens, I always have the aperture set to f/4.5, that way I can set exposure with shutter speed and ISO, and won't have to worry about my exposure changing when I zoom. After a while of using this lens, I noticed that even while shooting strictly at f4.5, the lens STILL looses light as you zoom in!!! This can be observed when using it on a dslr with auto ISO setting; as you zoom in, the ISO slowly increases to maintain the same exposure no matter what aperture setting you have set. This is my biggest complaint about this lens, it is the worst thing to shoot an event, and come home to proper-exposed wide angle shots but the 50mm and beyond shots are 1.5-2.5 stops underexposed! The auto focus is ok, not great, and doesn't focus in low light well. Overall, this is a great lens for consumers or anyone who doesn't shoot in manual mode, and is not a professional photographer that cares about the things listed above. It is a decent performance for the price, but beware all the issues described above!

I have bought this lens as a kit with my Nikon D600 a few years ago from another retailer. Since then I have used this lens many times for landscape and for travel photos and am very pleased with it. This lens on D610/D610 produces nice, pleasing colors and sharp pictures (especially at f8 or f11) and the VR works really well. Even though the bokeh is nothing to write much about, I have taken some nice family portraits. I like the fact that the lens detects when it is on the tripod and I dont have to turn off the VR every time I put it on tripod, as I often used to forget to have it turned on or off on other lenses that dont have this feature. The build quality is excellent, even it is made of plastic exteriors - I had accidentally dropped the camera and this lens ... MoreI have bought this lens as a kit with my Nikon D600 a few years ago from another retailer. Not a good way to test the build quality, but I am glad it survived with no apparent issues. If you are on budget or dont want to spend high price for wider aperture zooms in this range, dont hesitate to buy this lens.

Yes this is a great candid lens for weddings and events!

I used to think this was a convenient cheap kit lens. After testing it practically and with several objective test, I will tell you that it is a great lens. I have been photographing weddings for 40 years. If I only could take one lens to the wedding it would be a Nikon 50mm 1.8 on my D850. My second lens would be this one. My third would be a Tamron G2 70-200 f2.8.Is this an architectural lens, no! If you want "zoom sharp" pictures for candid's, portraits and vacation, WOW! It is light and dependable. The slightly bad: It seems to have a lot of contrast and has very saturated colors like I have never seen on any other Nikon lens. It is slow to focus in the dark. It may be a little soft on the extreme corners (Who uses the full 35mm long rectangle format? If you ... MoreI used to think this was a convenient cheap kit lens. If you shoot events like me at 5.6, you will love the speed, zoom range and sharpness. This review is for a Nikon 24-85mm 3.5-4.5 VR model. PS. I compared it to the Nikon 24-70 2.8 G on D850 and this 24-85mm VR spanked it bad! I also like the VR and have even used it for movies. I also tried the G2 Tamron 2.8 24-70mm and this 24-85mm VR is much sharper. I returned all 24-70 2.8s and kept this lens. I would have never have believed it if I would not have tested it. If you want snob appeal buy the 24-70mm 2.8 lens. If you just need sharp pictures and do not mind correcting aberration when it is important buy the 24-85mm. Five stars for a zoom, 4 stars compared to most prime glass. Smile.

[Rewarded Review] Highly Recommended.

I have been using the Nikon’s AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VRlens on a Nikon full-frame DSLR since 2017 and, as a fairly criticalphotographer, have always been very pleased with the photos it provides. I own a good number Nikon lenses, including some great primes, but this is the lens most often mounted on my cameras (both digital and film). I have been amused by reviewers that complain about the f3.5-4.5 aperture. It’s printed on the box in large numbers, so why give the lens demerits over something you knew when you bought it? And reducing stars because it’s not a professional level lens? At its price point who would expect it to be an equal to a 24-70mm f2.8 that costs over three times more money? Some reviewers have also mentioned distortion, and ... MoreI have been using the Nikon’s AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VRlens on a Nikon full-frame DSLR since 2017 and, as a fairly criticalphotographer, have always been very pleased with the photos it provides. At its price point who would expect it to be an equal to a 24-70mm f2.8 that costs over three times more money? Some reviewers have also mentioned distortion, and edge/cornersoftness in this lens. In my experience this is a very sharp lens and any distortion and corner light fall-off can easily be delt with in a good editing program, or within the camera of some Nikons. A well-known online reviewer has shown that it’s distortion at marked focal lengths at 10’ is equal to (at 24mm), less than (at 28mm), and a little more than (at 35mm, 50, mm and 70/85mm) that expensive24-70 f2.8 lens at the same focal lengths. If you are a pixel-peeper you may find some slight softness in the extreme edges and corners, but for all practical purposes these are a non-issue.The AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR is light weight, very sharp, and quite usable in low light with its VR and an FX camera’s excellent high ISO performance. It has proven to be well made and durable over the years. I have used it for general photography, landscape, documentary photography (aviation), commercial property photography (resorts), and travel photography. If I had to choose just one lens to take with me, it would be this one. I highly recommend this lens. If mine were stolen tomorrow, I would buy another one before the end of day.By the way, if you own a Nikon DX DSLR this lens is a stellar performer on an APS-C sensor and equates to a 36-127mm zoom. Like most FX lenses, it is even better on a DX camera. DX cameras only use the sharpest center of a full-frame lens thus avoiding all of the edge issues like distortion, light falloff, softness, and vignetting. DX lenses bring back those edge issues to a DX camera.
