It is very well balanced, when mounted though.Quality is great, and speed of focus is great. I don't use the memory functions, so I won't comment on those, but I do like the multiple readings display. All in all, amazing lens. Very happy with my purchase. Now to decide what lens is next.

Like the Z mount f/2.8 professional zoom lenses, this 100-400mm is exquisitely built, feels very nice to operate, looks fantastic, has great weather sealing and provides the highest level of image quality. The programmable function buttons and 3rd ring are very helpful in that they allow one to quickly change exposure levels and other settings without the left hand leaving the lens. This results getting more shots instead of menu diving. The zoom throw is just 80 degrees as well, which makes it easier to zoom in/out on subjects coming towards or going away from you. Also, the integrated lens collar is so smooth and well designed. If like me, you are replacing the 70-300mm AF-P and the 300mm PF with this lens, then it will take some time to get used to the extra ... However, this lens blows the 70-300mm out of the water in image quality, and is more versatile than the 300mm PF.One thing to be aware of is that the VR can cause issues if you leave it on while using a monopod. So make sure you turn VR off using a monopod or tripod. The only negative with this lens is the tripod foot it comes with. It isn't Arca Swiss compatible and isn't the safest to hold. So I bought a 3rd party replacement foot that is Arca Swiss compatible and is easier to really grip (and thus safer to use). Finally, yes this lens is very expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I ordered this lens the day it was announced and can't believe I got one in the first shipment. I have the Z 70-200mm f2.8S but it just doesn't have the reach I sometimes need I see wildlife or small birds. Most of my photography along the Western Slope of Colorado and Eastern Utah looking for lizards and other small critters. This lens, like its sibling the 70-200mm, is a great lens to carry while walking and looking for subjects. Almost the same length and weight with a slightly larger diameter, it's handles and balances nicely on a Z7. Obviously at 400mm, handheld shots are a challenge, but with good light and a fast shutter its doable. Focusing is smooth and fast but not as fast as the 500mm f5.6PF with an FTZ. I used a tripod for the shot at a focal length of 270mm. Even though the Mt. Garfield is 5-10 miles away, the atmospheric distortion was minimal on New Years morning. I was very pleased with the detail in the image.

I am a long time Nikon user, and this is my first new long telephoto zoom lens in many years. I am switching over from a 200-400mm f/4 VR.The new Z lens handily outperforms the old F mount lens in just about every way. Image quality is outstanding, focus and stabilization are distinctly better. Handling a small, light lens at these focal ranges is a joy, compared to the old beast. The "slow" aperture is perhaps the only complaint on the performance side. In low light, you really need to crank up ISO to get a fast shutter speed (eg for wildlife). The only other consideration is that it's quite expensive compared to other options from Nikon and Sigma. It's very good, but not cheap.
I've had this lens now since May of 2022 and have used it with and without the "Z" 1.4x teleconverter on my Nikon Z7 II camera body. This is an amazing zoom lens. I ordered it in November of 2021, but it was worth the wait.Attached are some pictures of Brown Pelicans I photographed with this lens. I tracked them as they flew by me and I'd say between 95% and 98% of the images were in focus, so the focus system worked very well. Both pictures were shot at 400mm focal length, f/10, at ISO 500, and a shutter speed of 1/2000th second. These two shots were without the teleconverter, but I've also used the lens with the teleconverter and was really happy with the results. The lens is not too heavy and not too big. Ideally, I'd like it a bit lighter in weight, but it's really not a problem. The only other possible negative is the variable f/stop of from f/4.5 to f/5.6. It would have been wonderful if it was a fixed f/stop of f/4, but that would certainly have made the lens bigger, heavier, and more expensive.I had great results shooting at 400mm with an f/stop of between f/8 and f/11. I set the camera to auto ISO with a maximum setting of ISO 6400 and was very happy with the results. Using a bit of noise reduction in post resulted in a really great image, but even without noise reduction it looked great. For me, I'd rather save money, weight, and size -- even though an f/4 lens would be ideal. The lens seems to be very well made and image quality, even wide open, is great --- but I feel stopping down one stop improves the image a bit more.I mainly use three "Z" lenses now; the 14-30mm f/4, the 24-120mm f/4, and this 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens.
This lens strikes the perfect balance for wildlife photography! It's very sharp across the entire frame, and the autofocus is silent and fast. I just got back from my first photo safari with it ? after a bit of practice, it was easy to capture perfectly focused birds, even in flight! The zoom range means that you're able to get up close and personal with your critter of choice, without ever being forced to choose between letting the subject fill the entire frame or taking several steps back.Meanwhile, the size and weight mean that you can carry it all day, easily whipping it around to follow rapidly moving targets. I waited quite awhile, but NPS HIP. Initial impression of first hundred images is very positive, as you would expect from an S lens. Focus is fast and dead on. Image stabilization on Z7ii gets me 1/30 sec at 400 mm reliably. Three things to note: The lens may be lighter technically than the 80-400, but on the lighter Z-body, it sure doesn't feel like it. It is actually about a cm longer when attached to the 7ii than the 80-400 was on my D850. There is significant vignetting wide open (f/4.5-5.6); I turned vignetting control on and the issue is somewhat improved. Overall ergonomics are quite good; it's nice to be able to remove the dam foot! I debated whether to give 4 stars due to the vignetting problem, but hey, it's a Nikon and it is mine after a long wait! Photo ... MoreI waited quite awhile, but NPS HIP. I have had the Nikon NIKKOR Z 100-400mm for about 9 months now and have taken it on multiple trips for landscape and wildlife photography. I have shot the lens exclusively with a Nikon Z7ii camera. The lens operates smoothly and the controls feel very solid. It is on the heavy side but, I can still hand-hold it easily without getting too tired. It is a lot to carry in a backpack on an extended hike, but I have carried it around all day in National Parks without too much fatigue. With the built-in optical image stabilization combined with the in-body image stabilization of the camera, I have had no trouble getting sharp hand-held images even under the 1/focal length shutter rule of thumb. I haven't tried to see how slow I can go, but I am comfortable shooting 400mm at 1/200s if I have to.My images have been tack-sharp and I haven't had any image quality issues with the lens. Focusing on animals can be a hunt at times if there is a lot of clutter in the area, but that may be as much related to the camera as to the lens. I do find the focus distance limiting switch to be helpful. The focus motors are so quiet that I usually can't hear them outside.I have recently shot the lens with the 2x teleconverter. This does require you to boost the ISO in all but good daylight as you lose 2 stops of light, but the images have been quite sharp when taken with the teleconverter. In summary, this lens is everything I expect from an S lens. Even though it is a bit heavy, I almost alway bring it with me when I go hiking in case I see some wildlife.
I bought the LensCoat cover for my new Nikkor 100-400mm to protect it from minor dings and dents. It seems to work OK. Sometimes the cover fitting over the 100-400's multifunction ring just aft of the lens' LCD window is difficult to turn; I think the cover for this ring is rubbing against adjacent cover pieces and increases the friction enough to prevent easy turning of this ring. Luckily, so far I haven't had use for the multifunction ring, but I may in the future, and if so this difficult turning ring may blossom into a hassle. The other thing I don't like on this LensCoat cover is for the forward portion of the lens that extends maybe 3 to 4 when zooming, it is covered with a light fabric camo sleeve with elastic bands on both ends. The idea is this fabric can accommodate the lengthening of the lens as it adjusts back and forth. Unfortunately this does not work in practice as the fabric sleeve gets twisted as one turns the zoom ring. Then if one zooms the lens from 400mm back down to 100mm all this loose fabric of the sleeve gets bunched up between the the part that is being zoomed and the focus ring, and one can't zoom back all the way to 100mm because of all this bunched-up fabric; not good.My solution to this problem? Not use this fabric camo sleeve. This isn't a perfect solution as when zoomed out to 400mm this portion of the kens is not covered with camo...so I wasted a portion of this camo cover kit...I don't like that as I feel I paid a lot of money for the cover, and now I am not getting my money's worth. This short-sighted design of the cover for the portion where the lens zooms needs to have a better solution for the price I paid for the cover!
I've had this lens for about 8 months and love it. I bought it to use with my Z6 for animal photography and it met every hope that I had. It's heavy-ish but still light enough to shoot hand-held and to bring on long hikes. It's also pretty tough; it's been poked by tree branches, set down hard on rocks, and it's gotten wet but it still works perfectly.I'm very much an enthusiast/not a pro so you can take my technical thoughts with a grain of salt but: it seems very sharp - the impala picture was shot wide open and you can still see every hair on his face. Autofocus is pretty good even in low light, I get ~90% of my shots in focus - the elk pic was taken on an overcast day right before sunset, and the leopard stepped out in front of our safari vehicle unexpectedly ... And it also produces some beautiful bokeh and macro photos. At times, I've needed a wider lens or wished for a longer lens but it's a good amount of reach for many situations.
