Arrived with a defective tripod collar
2 June 2022Daniel

Unfortunately I did not notice until after the return period expired that the tripod collar was defective as it would not completely tighten up. I did not notice this immediately because I don't use tripods. I advise all new owners of this lens to test not only the sharpness of the lens (which I did and it looks good), but also every other aspect of the lens to make sure everything works as it should and nothing is wrong before your return period is expires. For a $14K lens, I am severely disappointed in Nikon's quality control and the most expensive purchase in my life has become a huge headache in trying to get fixed.

I used to own the Nikon 400 F mount 2.8. This new Z mount lens with the built-in teleconverter is absolutely fantastic! The sharpness is fantastic at any F number. You cannot see any difference in quality from shooting at 400 mm or 560 mm.The technology, quality and weight was a great decision to move to Mirrorless. Z9

Brilliant!
10 January 2023

I have the older G version of this lens which has always been a superior lens (images I took 10 years ago I can still recognize as coming from this lens). I will be selling it soon because the new 400 f/2.8 has just blown my mind! It's light, razor sharp, fast and instantly converts to a 560mm f/4 at the pull of a lever. Brilliant!

Expected better fit and feel
6 January 2023

The product looks good, however, the fit is so so at best. The wrap for the lens hood is not cut properly. It causes a small "lift" in the material that does not belong. Water catches behind the hood if you are using the lens in weather. The plastic windows for the TC switch are also a joke. Finally, the focus ring is useless with the wrap over it. If you look at the people in videos using the product (Steve Matthies for instance, with the white version) he has removed the wrap on the focus, function, TC switch areas. Too much money to have this many problems.

If you want quality results over technology this lens is a sleeper bargain.
19 August 2013

I had wanted to purchase a lens in this focal length but could not afford the more recent AF version. When this lens became available at a reasonable price I purchased it and was very surprised. After testing on both a bench and the field I have concluded this is a very sharp lens, a bargain sleeper. The manual focus was not a problem (I did use MF for many years until AF was a standard feature so this was not new). The real surprise was the sharpness of the images. Using a D800 the raw images could be cropped considerably and still produce stunning images. Generally I set exposures manually and so this was also no problem. The lens is rugged and solid. I had forgotten the feel of an all metal, manual focus prime lens. I had forgotten the feel of an all metal, manual focus prime lens. If there was an issue it was the weight of the system. I know some say they can hand hold this focal length, but the only really good images (13" x 19") were with a very, very sturdy tripod (Versa TVC-33 & RRS 55 ball head) or a large bean bag. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and at this point have no desire to replace it soon with a later model.

Silent! Light! Fast Autofocus, Excellent IQ
28 April 2022

First thing you notice - it's light. It's *very* light - you can easily hand hold for long periods, the balance is perfect. Next thing you notice is that the autofocus is dead silent and fast - and accurate (on a Z9 at least) even when wide open. Images snap into focus without motor noise, and seem to be spot on. Bokeh is smooth. Did a decent job shooting on water with sun directly overhead (better than other glass) - nothing weird, just the inevitable 'flatness'. IQ even with the TC seems excellent, physically though the TC toggle is a slight stretch - I'm sure I'll get used to it, eventually. Until then, I determine if I'm in 400/560mm by looking at the aperture in the EVF (assuming you're shooting wide open). Until then, I determine if I'm in 400/560mm by looking at the aperture in the EVF (assuming you're shooting wide open). New lens cover is an improvement (faint praise, since I immediately replaced other Nikon long glass lens covers as useless) - although I'm not sure how effective it will be for dust (loose). New lens shade seems okay - although for the cost doesn't appear to be carbon fiber, but still light. Durability may be an issue. Usual complaint - no Arca-Swiss foot - and Nikon has gone to a new mounting screw alignment so existing RRS and others after market replacement feet will not work - you need the dreaded 2 screw to Arca-Swiss plate adapter. New travel case seems okay - it'll look good on the shelf with all the rest, I'm sure... Overall, a very expensive lens, but if weight, IQ, accurate, fast, and silent autofocus, and a 400 f/2.8 and a 560 f/4 in the same lens are important, you won't go wrong with this piece of glass. Looking forward to comparing the IQ with the eventual 600 f/4 - but it may be too late by then - the flexibility of also having a 400mm lens at the same time will be hard to beat, even if you gain an extra 40mm.

The best fast super tele
8 June 2016

The large f2.8 140 mm dia ED front elements pull in a lot of light and this lens excels even for astrophotography. Biokeh is good and sharpness is superior. This all metal sturdy legacy lens functions well on a high end full frame DSLR Nikon and autofocus is great. It is hand holdable although a monopod or tripod is recommended. If you want the best, this is it.

What I've been waiting for! Great lens
9 February 2023

I'm loving this lens. Finally a 400 f/2.8 that's both smaller and lighter than previous versions. Ah, but then you have a built in extender making it a 560mm at f/4 so it's two lenses in one! It's fast, gets beautifully sharp images and again, so light that I don't feel the need for a tripod or monopod at all. I will be enjoying this lens for a long time.

amazing performance and image quality
27 April 2022

As expected, this lens did not disappoint! AF performance is noticeably better than the F versions with FTZ-II and the TC is amazing. Except for when shooting in harsh direct sunlight overhead, I noticed absolutely no difference in image quality with the TC in place.
