One of the newest Z lenses from Nikon and it doesn't disappoint. Focus is fast, smooth, and quiet, everything is absolutely sharp. I have a Z6 II and if it wasn't for my 24 MP resolution, I feel like I could get even sharper images.Great for portraits, gives good compression with great colors and contrast. Macro shots are tack sharp but require a good amount of light as getting everything in focus may require higher than usual F-stops.Between the two macro lenses available, I say to go with this one vs. the 50mm, unless cost is a factor. Definitely required kit for a wedding or food photographer.

Best Macro Lens I've Ever Owned

The best macro lenses I had ever used before this one were the Fujifilm XF 80mm f/2.8 OIS WR, and the manual focus Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro. I have long awaited this native Z mount macro, and it was worth the wait.Pros:* Image Quality - Sharp as a tack. No chromatic abberation (and I tried hard to create it). Lens flaring is non-existent as well.* Bokeh! This lens produces even creamier and smoother transitioning bokeh than the Laowa 100mm 2x Ultra Macro that has 13 aperture blades. This was a delightful surprise.* Autofocus - This lens was able to remain focused on a flying bumble bee in AF-C mode at macro distances. That made my jaw drop. And at normal distances the AF is quick and snappy. Just make sure to use the button that limits focusing distance.* Build - This lens is much lighter than other macro lenses I have used, and it has the same premium build as features as the professional f/2.8 zoom lenses.* Cost - Honestly, Nikon could have charged more for this lens. I wonder if Nikon is putting this out as a loss leader; Aa gateway lens that will convince more people to invest in the f/2.8 zooms.Cons:* No Teleconverter Compatibility - I really, really wish this lens had been designed to allow the use of the new Z teleconverters to go beyond 1:1. However, that probably would have added substantial size, weight and cost.* Lens Cap - I just don't like the Z lens caps. They are no as easy to put on, and they don't stay on as well as the older lens caps for F-mount lenses. I recommend buying an older lens cap, and keeping the Z lens cap as a spare.

Fantastic Macro and Portrait Lens
15 May 2022

I have had this lens for roughly three weeks and it has exceeded my expectations. The sharpness is incredible. I love the focus limit switch, manual/autofocus switch, and the customizable ring on the lens. I currently use the ring to change the aperture. This is my first Macro Capable lens in over 35 years of photography and the first thing that shocked me was how close I could get to the subject.Focusing:As long as you use the focusing limit switch the focusing is fast and accurate. I use single-point control to tell the lens where to focus when using AF and taking macro shots. There are times when I prefer to manually focus the lens which is why the AF/MF switch is fantastic.

Impressive Images, Tough Focusing
26 May 2022

I was excited to get this lens into my collection, as I like to shoot images with lots of close-up detail. The lens has not disappointed in that regard. The quality is excellent, even stopped fully open or at its smallest aperture. That said, the reason I rated four stars is the focusing. I knew it would be more of challenge to focus at close range, but it is tougher than I imagined. I thought the minimum distance, around 12, would be tough, but that difficulty extends out from there. It's not until you're five-ish feet away that focusing becomes easier and faster. Furthermore, I thought the focus limiting switch on the barrel of the lens would help at close ranges, but I've not seen much of difference in that regard. I've done manual focusing almost exclusively for all up-close shots, i.e. shots from three feet or less. If you're comfortable with focusing manually, you won't have an issue. If you're someone who only likes auto-focus, you won't be happy at close range. The auto-focus just spins and spins, and can't get any focus at close range.Despite the focusing issue, which was somewhat expected, I really do like the images that I'm capturing with the lens, and I think it's an impressive piece of equipment to have in my bag.

Quite the upgrade
3 February 2022

This new offering on my new Nikon Z7 II compared to the original 105mm F-mount lens that I used on my old Nikon D750 DSLR is like night and day as far as improvements go. People complain about the hunting but compared to the old F-mount, it's much quicker (and lighter of a lens!) and is way more workable in my honest opinion. The shots that come from this are nothing short of remarkable through my limited time I've had with it so far. Sharp as can be and I thought I'd hate the fly-by-wire system on the new Z mirrorless camera systems but It's totally fine once you get used to it (which didn't take me long at all to acclimate to and is such an overly exaggerated problem). All in all, definitely recommend it if you're on the fence but want to dive into great macro capabilities/portrait shots as it's well worth the money and not all too expensive for a prime such is this. Couple this with the FotodioX 35mm extension tube and you can get real close to the action!

Sharp, no color fringing
28 January 2022

I've had this about a month now, and the shipping wait was worth it. My primary usage for this lens is as a moderately fast 100 mm prime for general & portraiture work. And I am quite happy with what I've seen. One of my pet peeves is magenta/green fringing around high-contrast transitions, such as tree branches against the sky. That was one reason I got rid of my previous Nikkor 105 (the f/2.8D). I see none of that with this lens - Whether central or frame edge, in focus or blurred, wide open, down to the pixel level (Z6) it is free of color fringes. It is also sharp across the whole field when wide open. I've compared it to a Zeiss Makro-Planar T 2/100 I have access to. I see no reason to stop down for image quality, just for depth of field. The autofocus is quiet to my ear. I've heard it once or twice when cranking over the whole range, but in ordinary operation I have to listen carefully to hear it.

Slower focusing
28 July 2022

I didn't get this for doing sports photography but did notice focusing doesn't snap onto a subject, unless the subject is close to where the focus is while photographing children at free play or indoors. Likely it's hunting over a wide range from macro to 15 feet and beyond. I'm guessing it takes in such a wide range from very close to infinity a lot of movement is involved to focus. The slowness did surprise me. But not of great concern as I got this primarily as a macro (micro) and portrait lens. A 105mm f2.5 had been a favorite lens of mine and I like this for the perspective given when doing children's faces.I've yet to work on macro subjects and will do it with focus shifting feature on the Nikon Z6.

Spectacular Lens!
29 September 2022

I was a huge fan of the Nikon F-mount version, the AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens. Over the course of about 4 years I used it, in sequence, on my D3300, D7200, D610, D810 and D750. I went out shooting nearly every day and almost always used that lens and have hundreds of photos that I loved. Then, when I got my Z7II at the end of 2020, I used this lens on my Z7II and it worked great with the FTZ adapter. Then, when I started swapping my F mount lenses for Z lenses I finally got this and WOW - the photos with this lens have knocked my socks off! Crystal clear, amazing color, and it is lighter and easier to carry around than the G version. Do not hesitate to purchase this lens. 23 May 2022

My macro lenses (before this 105MC) consist of the older Nikon 105/2.8 AF-D Micro, a Tamron 90/2.8 SP Macro, and a Nikon 60/2.8G AFS. I also extensively use the super wonderful Nikon 105/1.4E for portraits. I found myself needing a 105mm Micro that can AF because I never had the 105/2.8G AFS Micro.I recently picked up this Nikon Z MC 105/2.8 VR S (105 MC for short) and have tested it as a macro lens for over a couple hundred of pictures and scenarios (eg. close ups of flowers) and I am most pleasantly surprised at how sharp this lens is and the AF is very smooth and accurate.I was not sure how this lens would be as a portrait lens since my standard is the Nikon 105/1.4 E. What I can say is this: this 105 MC can definitely compete with the 105 E for portraiture. ... MoreMy macro lenses (before this 105MC) consist of the older Nikon 105/2.8 AF-D Micro, a Tamron 90/2.8 SP Macro, and a Nikon 60/2.8G AFS. What I can say is this: this 105 MC can definitely compete with the 105 E for portraiture. No, it can not replace the 105E because there are situations where I would want the wider aperture of 1.4 while this MC is only a 2.8. Having said that, I would not hesitate to use this Z 105 MC for portraits, for most of the times.Summary: this Z 105MC is definitely worth the money. It excels as a micro 105 lens and it performs splendidly as a portrait lens, rivalling the famous 105E for most situations, except for those more specific use cases where the 105E is still the best there is.
