Owlet Baby Monitor Smart Sock 3

We only used the Owlet sock a couple of times and had a few false alarms. However, this low rating is less attributable to that and is instead due to the unreliability of the video baby monitor component of the Owlet. When the video is actually working, the video and sound quality are great. But, the video is so unreliable. I would estimate the video only works about 50% of the time. Sometimes it randomly says "Your Owlet Cam is offline" or that we are not connected to the internet. We have no internet problems at our house, except for apparently when using the Owlet. Unplugging and re-plugging in the camera usually solves the problem, but when we sneak into our son's room to do that, we risk waking a sleeping baby. Therefore, it is really useful to have video footage (that actually works) so we can see if he is really awake before entering the room. The sound detection feature is also too sensitive, so it will have your phone vibrating with alerts all night (if you do not constantly have the app open). Overall, the unreliability makes it not worth the price.

EDIT 4/6: Been using it for a bit now and love it. As I theorized below, they just updated the app to include blood oxygen levels on a 10 minute average which is awesome. Also, if it ceases to get a reading of heart rate, it alerts you under the notion that the sock came off, but should anything else cause that stop in heart rate feedback, it in essence alerts you, thus providing peace of mind. Does it let you set alarms for heart rate drops specifically? No. Does it monitor blood oxygen levels? No although I believe the equipment is still there in the device and once they have FDA approval, this feature would potentially become available - I’m guessing.The reason for 4 not 5 star is that it is quite pricey and your interactions with the data are limited. It reports out heart rate chart for the night but you can’t review it other than visually and with a reported average. You also can’t see the timing of the awake/light/deep sleep stages which would’ve been nice. See screenshot for basically what you get. Still worth it if you can absorb the cost and here’s to hoping the functionality will increase with future FDA approval as a medical device.

Annoying at times, otherwise great product

We brought the camera/sock bundle, and after few hiccups with wifi set up etc we were good to go. Product quality is really good. The camera images are good if you have good wifi. The sock though - I like it (particularly because my baby started rolling onto his belly to sleep at 3 months olds), so it is peace of mind, but if baby is fussing a lot (kicking and moving around) when your trying to get them to sleep, the thing sets off this obnoxious tone on the base station, apparently due to placement issue. You can pause temporarily in the app, but when your trying to calm a fussy baby it’s the last thing you want to deal with, especially in the middle of the night cause this thing is loud! Camera not worth $$$

I’d love to give the Owlet a higher rating, and if I was considering the dream sock exclusively I would probably give 4.5 stars, but I have to take into account the camera and the app. Camera: This is the area I am most critical of Owlet. For the price, you would expect the camera quality to be outstanding. You might even expect a separate tablet to monitor from so that you can use your personal phone for other activities while continuously monitoring. Neither of these things are true. Despite having both incredibly fast and reliable WiFi, the camera quality has never risen above “fair” in the app, and there is a noticeable lag in the footage/sound. Additionally, having to rely solely on the app to access the camera might initially seem like a perk, but the reality has been that having to access the app every time I want to check in has been slow and sometimes redundant because physically checking on the baby would be faster and less frustrating than the buffering time. Not to mention the drain on my phone’s battery. Sock: I love it. It gives peace of mind (especially when I can’t access the camera >.<) and I’ve appreciated the sleep data. The only reason it falls short of five stars is that it tends to alert for “placement issues”when there are none and the pause prompts function takes an annoying amount of time to load in these cases. App: Not the best. It can be pretty slow and buggy, but it’s also not the worst and at least it’s not flooded with ads. Overall, I wish the camera was better quality and came with a separate monitoring tablet, but I love the sock.

Caught my baby’s tachycardia!!

My gf recommended this product for peace of mind and I’m a nurse and know that these type of sensor can give more worries to parents than not.. So I started reading reviews, noted both pros and cons, and still decided to purchase it. It was the best thing I have done for my then newborn baby! I place the sock on my baby when he was 1week old and first night, it gave me the red alarm showing his heart rate (HR) was 330bpm. My baby was sound asleep, breathing and not showing any signs of distress. I replaced the sock, checked its placement, switched it to another foot but it was still alarming. I then called 811 (Nurses’ line in Canada) just so I can bounce off idea with another nurse. At this point, my baby is still asleep and showing no problems. They then decided to bring us in and hook him up to a much bigger monitor and his heart rate reading was reading between 295bpm-330bpm. Next thing I know we have 8 healthcare professionals around us and they had to give him med via IV to basically restart his heart (Adenosine). We were transferred and admitted to Children’s hospital and the rest is history… He was diagnosed with SVT (SupraVentricular Tachycardia), received treatment and is now on heart meds with the goal to slowly taper him off of it. SVT occurs on babies but since they can tolerate faster heart rate than adults, they show no symptoms until they are much older. The cardiologists described SVT as if my baby is running a marathon and sooner or later would have shown symptoms. It is treatable though so it is good that it was caught earlier. I am still using the owlet monitor and no episodes since he’s been on meds. He is now 5 months so I do highly recommend this product especially for new moms like me!

DOES NOT WORK

I bought my sock and camera duo when I was pregnant with my daughter. All four times I have went to use it does not work! I have called customer service for assistance, have fixed the issue previously then just disconnects from WiFi or the sock keeps disconnecting from the docking station. I spent $400 on the duo and now they are telling me I am SOL and today when I called that’s practically what they told me after doing the trouble shooting and it’s not working. They offered to do a discount on the new sock, however, why should I have to invest more money when  the stuff I have bought never worked. I feel the money I spent is a waste, won’t even work and have nothing but issues since I got it. Overall, the product accomplishes what it has set out to do... it provides an easy-to-use app with the ability to monitor your baby's heart rate and blood oxygen levels, as well as an alert system if either of those levels go out of range. This wasn't all that clear when first setting up and using the product, but just so new customers are aware.3. We have had 2 false alarms so far where the base station lit up red signaling that there was a problem, but the issue was really that the sock had shifted slightly and transmitted an inaccurate reading. My advice for new customers would be to treat red alarms from this product as an initial signal to check on your baby, but don't necessarily immediately assume the worst because it's very possible that the sock may have shifted causing a false alarm. The first time around we tried a cheaper option, the snuza, because I had heard mixed reviews of the owlet and false alarms. The snuza would become dislodged and give us frequent false alarms, but it was cheaper than the owlet. This time around we wanted something that would not do this and provide us better peace of mind. One of my friends lost her child to SUDC and uses a monitor with her new baby so I valued her opinion. She uses the neebo which has unfortunately been unavailable. She reported the owlet gave her false alarms the first night she used it so I was hesitant to purchase the owlet, however, we have not had issues and it’s worked great for us. There were some alarms the first night but this was due to the learning curve/not false alarms for us. My only complaint is that the range of the base is not great. We have it in our bedroom for now where our bassinet is, but the first night we came home baby still had nights and days mixed up and would not settle in his bassinet. We were taking turns staying up with him/rocking him in his room which is no more than 100 feet from the base and it would disconnect every time we went in there. We are otherwise pleased with our purchase and like how the app allows us to monitor him from our phones. The battery life has been good and it charges quickly. It has given us comfort to have this monitoring-especially with a 2 year old running around and our attention being more divided than it was with one child.

But by first putting the Owlet sock on her before going into the carrier for the first time, it gave us the confidence knowing we'd immediately be alerted if she had difficulty breathing once inside the carrier.CONS: The only one worth mentioning is the sock does not fit well on very small feet. Our daughter was 5.5 pounds at birth, and even the smallest size of sock simply was too big for her for at least the first 2 weeks. Eventually we found that installing the sock upside down actually fit better and ensured the sensor stayed close to her foot during the whole night. There is no price you can put on PEACE OF MIND!

I’ve had the sock now for 18 months (3/2020 right when Covid started) when my daughter was born and I bought the smart sock 2… (then I upgraded to the sock 3 about 4 months later) but I’ll start there. The sock gave us peace of mind and knowing that our newborn is safe at night in her bassinet. I will say that the sock 2 did work with the SNOO bassinet but our bassinet never increased speed much since our girl was a good sleeper. Now it didn’t work in the swing at all… however the sock 3 does!! Our swing had to be on the first level but it worked and she loved to take her naps there so that great for us! The charging is wayyyy easier on the 3 than the 2, but all in all if price is an issue the sock 2 does the job the same (just with a little less battery time and you gotta plug it in vs just a quick magnet charge). Also, some or a lot of the reviews are old and on the ORIGINAL sock which was glitchy, but with all the app improvements even over the last 18 months, this is an amazing product and my sock 2 has performed better with the updates as well and doesn’t seem to have the base station issues that it did when I first started using it. I would honestly pay a lot more if I had to since it’s worth every penny! You just can’t justify money over safety in my opinion! I just had to write this review if it helps anyone that’s teetering whether or not to get it… GET IT and get your SLEEP!Oh, also… fun fact! I can tell if my daughter is getting a fever… (vaccines) heart rate has a steady increase on the graph vs more of a straight line AND I know if the Tylenol is working because her heart rate will drop to normal and continue a straight pattern till the fever picks up again, so you just get to know the normal and for me, that’s good because at least I’ll know if something is off with oxygen or heart rate. Check out the graphs, very easy to use, and I like the tracking for every night and nap! Give it a chance and you won’t regret it.
