This is my first time buying this large a quantity of Orchard hay for my Guinea pigs, though I have been getting this type and brand through Chewy for about 3 years now. I saved so much ordering the largest size I could get AND I qualified for the free $30 Chewy e-giftcard, so I will end up saving over $60, nearly the cost of 50lbs of hay! It's always great quality hay, though it can be a challenge for some to safely store this much hay. I use a large, outdoor trash can with locking lid that fits under my boys' enclosure. Works great!

I love oxbow generally but I recently purchased 2 50 pound boxes and the first one I opened isn’t what it usually is like. I have 7 Guinea pigs and they love to hide in the hay. This box is so shredded that it’s impossible for them to burrow into. It just falls flat onto the floor of their enclosure. I’m doubting whether or not they even eat it. I have supplement with som Timothy hay that is better quality. Hopefully the second box is like this as well. So you could be getting amazing hay or hay that’s barely useful.

I used to swear by Oxbow Hay, but not anymore. The last 3 deliveries the quality has dropped significantly. There's so much dust! One of my piggies ended up with a respiratory infection and now a second piggy has developed a cough! Very disappointed with this product anymore. Of the hay we have left, I've resorted to sifting it by hand in order to get the dust out as much as I can. This is a messy and time-consuming process and there is so much waste. I've bought this hay for years and now I have to look for a new brand out of concern for my piggies health.

I think this is the first review I've ever submitted on any product. However, like those of you that have commented, the quality of this grass has continued to deteriorate. Every bag I purchase gets worse. Like you say the amount of dust is ridiculous. The foxtails (which never use to be) increase with each bag and previously I could pick them out as they were attached to a stem. Now it seems as those they are trying to mix them in and so we won't notice. They are now just foxtail tips making it really difficult to get them out. I used to love the orchard grass but no more. Have to find something else.
I buy this hay from my local Petsmart. Occasionally, there are brown pieces mixed in but it's nothing too awful. Recently, I had to return an opened bag of hay and get a new one because there were animal remains processed with the hay. After buying the bag, I opened it and noticed a strange scent emanating from the hay. I dismissed it and didn't think anything of it until I was pulling out more hay a few days later. I pulled out a wad and perceived what looked like fur pieces. It wasn't just a chunk of hay.I believe a small animal encountered extreme misfortune and ended up in this hay bag, ground down and dead. I'm traumatized and I was very upset because I was feeding my beloved guinea pig this hay from Friday night to Sunday night.
I expected better from Oxbow. I think the quality is good, but it's so fragmented that it's practically dust. More suitable for making pellets. It makes a HUGE mess because the shreds just end up on the floor of the cage and are too small to be eaten. It isn't always like this. I used to buy the timothy, until it started coming the same way -- that's why I tried the orchard. The last bag of orchard I bought was still bad, but not this bad. I don't know where else to turn, because Oxbow has always been the best. :/
I'm waiting for the real Orchard Hay to be delivered because there is no way this is Orchard Hay. It looks to be 3rd cut Timothy Hay. I know the difference because I've had every hay there is. This is my first time ordering Oxbow Orchard Hay in a box so I thought maybe I missed something, but after reading the reviews it is confirmed that this is the wrong hay. Now I have to go into the store and purchase a few bags because my piggies are a little unhappy. I will be contacting Oxbow and Chewy regarding this as well.
I found that buying in bulk is always a risk. Whenever I buy the box of 9lbs, there's a higher chance it could be small, leftover dusty pieces. It's happened so often that at this point I've decided to just buy the 90oz bag. The hay is always random as you never know what cut you will get. That's never been a problem. It's only a problem when you get extremely dusty hay that could cause respiratory issues in your pet. My bunnies main hay is Oxbow but, never the boxes again which is unfortunate. I would give 2.5 stars because it's not always bad but, I would say 30% chance of the dusty issue.
I have been buying Oxbow Orchard Hay now for 10 years for our rabbit because he preferred Orchard than Timothy. He likes the crunchiness and taste of it. But, this past couple orders I’ve noticed the hay quality has dramatically changed. It doesn’t look like orchard it looks and feels more like Timothy hay, it’s short brown, crumbles and dusty. My rabbit doesn’t eat it as much as he eats his hay before. I thought may be Oxbox accidentally put Timothy hay in to orchard box, so I ordered a couple more boxes of the 9lbs. hoping I get a different batch, but I got the same poor quality, dusty, crumbs, I don’t think this is orchard hay!
I’ve been purchasing 25-50 lbs of oxbow orchard hay every few months for the last few years. Never had much of an issue. Well last shipment wasNot the normal nice soft orchard hay I’ve been getting, but was like the bits of hay at the end of the pile or like 3rd cut Timothy hay. So, I complained. Well, the next box I got was exactly the same. Sharp stick like bits that resembled nothing like what I have been getting. So until more solid reviews come in I’ll stop buying this stuff. I have a ton of small animals to feed & they just won’t eat this “orchard” hay. It’s just becoming really expensive bedding.
