Sleek, simple and elegant: introducing the Panasonic Lumix Lx100 Digital Compact Camera. The built-in Leica DC Vario-Summilux zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-75mm, covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. With a fast maximum aperture of f/1.7-2.8, the lens lets you work in lower light situations and provides selective focus control for shallow depth of field imagery, enhanced by a nine-bladed aperture for smooth out-of-focus rendering. When more light is needed, the camera features an integrated hot shoe, letting you use external flash units. A compact flash unit is included with the camera, matching the style and color of the body, and providing a GN of 23' (7m) at ISO 100. The lightweight, compact body features both an electronic viewfinder and a rear LCD screen. The high-density 2,764k-dot viewfinder lets you confidently frame your shots, even in bright outdoor environments. Delivering approximately 100% of the Adobe RGB color space, the viewfinder accurately reproduces hues, so you know what you see is what you're capturing. The rear 3.0" screen is also available, with a 921k-dot resolution. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC allows remote camera control and image sharing from linked mobile devices using the Panasonic Image App.

Good image quality, but uninspiring and poor construction

Macro capability is good along with decent reach on the tele end of things. The 4k post focus stacking is a neat concept but in practice the results leave a bit to be desired. Not much a video guy so no comments on that end.My biggest nits are for some reason the on/off switch is easy to actuate when safely stored in a Tamrac Goblin pouch whilst in my messenger bag. So more than once I've grabbed my camera only to realize the battery is dead.Even bigger is that the protective auto leaf shutter/closure thingy on front of the lens has stopped functioning again. Yes I said 'again'. I have recently just sent this to Panasonic for repair and already it has broken yet again. So I'll attempt to send it back once more and will promptly sell it after getting fixed. And no, it has never been dropped or abused it still looks brand new. Overall it's a decent enough EDC but lens closure being broken again combined with an uninspiring aesthetic has made me determined to move on. It's a good camera for the enthusiast, backpacker, etc, but for someone that wants something closer to a pro level EDC look elsewhere. Time for that Fuji after all.

Great image quality in a tidy package

I was looking for a small, but capable camera to use for mostly travel and hiking when I did not want to haul around one of my DSLR rigs. The things I was looking for was outstanding image quality, easy access to manual settings and intuitive controls in a tidy package at an affordable price point. The top camera on my list was the Fujifilm X100F, but I could not afford it. I next spent quite a bit of time with the Sony RX100 IV ( The V I felt was a little pricey for what you gained over the IV). While I was impressed with the image quality and focusing speed of the Sony, the camera was almost too small and, consequently, the manual controls a bother to access with a menu that needs some updating. The LX100 was not really on my initial list because it is an older model with a small pixel count when compared with newer point and shoots. However, in being honest with myself, I rarely require what a 20MP sensor can deliver. For me, its all about image quality and I became intrigued by the LX100s large sensor and fine lens, as well as the accessible manual controls. When the price on the camera dropped to 1/2 of what the X100F sells for, I decided to purchase the camera and I am quite pleased that I did. The camera has a well-made and professional feel to it with great logical controls and a simple to use and customizable menu. The images are superb. Sharp with excellent color. This little camera has a great Leica lens and pares well with the 4/3 sensor. I am particularly pleased with performance in marginal lighting situations where the shadow detail is outstanding. The video that comes out of this little camera is remarkable and makes you realize what you sacrifice when using a smartphone. Best of all, I can easily take full manual control of the camera with everything being controlled by outside dials (I use the lens control ring for ISO to complete the package). In short, this came is a terrific value.

Unfortunately, I often accidentally move dials and make unwanted adjustments to settings (such as exposure), but I am getting more used to where the dials are located and mess them up less often. Overall, this camera takes excellent photographs, but some aspects are not very user-friendly, especially the screen.

More than just Point-And-Shoot

This camera features a fast (f/1.4), wide angle to short telephoto Leica lens. The quality of pictures and especially videos made with this camera are excellent, in general. One can leave the camera in "auto" mode when shooting either pictures or video and be reasonably sure of acceptable results. But its more than just a point and shoot camera. For example, when shooting pictures in aperture priority (A mode) the control ring around the lens can be used to adjust the focus. This feature reduces the possibility of unsatisfactory focus which was a problem with my previous point and shoot camera. The instruction booklet that came with the camera is often useful in learning how to access the various functions. Nice camera but just misses on some key areas

Ultimately, we returned this camera (thank you B&H for your generous policy!). Overall, it's a nice camera, took decent photos, has a ton of features, and was on sale at the time, but the things it lacks were just too much to be compensated by it's positive attributes.PROS:+ Size and weight are nice+ f1.4 - 2.8 is the fastest you can get in this price range (or even in pricier cameras with 1 sensors)+ Photo quality was good, pictures came out with proper WB most every time+ Flip-up LCD screen was nice and conveniently switched the camera to a 'selfie mode' where it would count-down and take 3 pics without having to do any setting changes+ Lots of features (4K, 4K burst, 4K pre-burst, post-focusing, focus stacking, macro, HDR, high burst rate)+ ... MoreUltimately, we returned this camera (thank you B&H for your generous policy!). For example, I changed the zoom ring to control manual focus... but found it did nothing when shooting in certain modes and had to trial/error to get back. Would have liked to have a setting that sets all settings back to a customized default when camera is turned off, to do a fast reset of settings- Battery life isn't great; indicator is in thirds, and without a spare battery, I start to get conservative in use when it drops to 2/3 within an hour of casual use- Small size means it's easy to accidentally hit the LCD and inadvertently change focus point or hit on-screen buttonsCOULD GO EITHER WAYS~ The aperture ring isn't bad to have, but seems more for visual effect than easy use in RL... I would prefer a front dial under the shutter on the front of camera~ The body is slippery but just make sure to always use a wrist strap (included one does the job, but isn't adjustable)I would have been happier with a slightly larger camera to get more zoom and a viewfinder, but I'm sure Panasonic's market research shows P&S's have to be this tiny. We are going to switch to the DMC-ZS100 which also has a 1 sensor, but has 10x zoom and a viewfinder, though a fixed LCD.Depending on B&H sales, they are sometimes the same price.

Outstanding and Capable Small Camera

I cannot say enough about the quality of the LX100 and the quality of the photos it produces. The camera has a quality feel that one notes when one first holds the LX100 in the hand. Although the LX100 won't win the megapixel wars (nor will the Mark II version), the megapixels are more than sufficient for the intended use of the camera, and the features on the camera match those for many DSLRs (if not exceeding some), and so the limited megapixels are more than offset by the amount of creativity packaged in the LX100. The ergonomics of the camera are such that little use is needed to acquire competence with the camera. If you ever shot film and you have any memory of the right locations for aperture and shutter speed dials, this camera will fall right to your hands. ... MoreI cannot say enough about the quality of the LX100 and the quality of the photos it produces. Finally, the lens is great, including for macro photos. The only limitation I have found in using the camera is the absence of an articulating rear screen, but that is only an issue because the lens has such great macro capability. Highly recommended. The attached photo was shot in macro focus, Jpeg, slight cropped for composition.

The Leica lens offers superb optics that take advantage of the large sensors resolution. I like the EVF, but to some it is annoying! The one thing I wish this camera had is a tilt screen, touch screen I can live without, but as much as this camera is setup as a creative tool, I just dont see why thats missing! That said, overall this is a great camera. A great travel camera that will yield fantastic results!

Still the Best 4K and stills camera you can fit in a large pocket
30 November 2016

I do some serious video production work and occasionally some commercial web photography. I have used micro 4/3 cameras such as the GH2, G6 and GH4 and was looking for something compact I'm flexible enough to use for occasional quick and dirty shoots. I looked at the Sony a 6300 but by the time I buy the body and one or two lenses it's several times the cost of the LX 100. Plus the A 6300's we're rolling shutter, overheating issues and much larger size in the end made it a non-option. What sets this camera apart from the rest is that it's incredibly compact, ruggedly built, and for serious photographers the fast and intuitive old school controls make it a fast and easy to shoot in the way many professionals like to shoot stills. What sets this camera apart from the rest is that it's incredibly compact, ruggedly built, and for serious photographers the fast and intuitive old school controls make it a fast and easy to shoot in the way many professionals like to shoot stills. The fast F1.7 Leica Summlux zoom lens what is for the most part super sharp and outrageously contrasty. If this lens were available as a removable option it would likely cost more than the camera itself. Detail this lens affords even wide open often produces images with 13mp that rival 16 to 24mp DSLRs. I don't have to pack around two or three lenses and the camera comes complete with and exceptional Leica optical system built-in for less than the cost of comparable camera body or lens alone! 4K video is excellent and I prefer what I get straight out of the camera then the what I end up with after grading 8-bit flat Log footage from the GH4. Not having a mic input or headphone monitor makes it a challenge if you're shooting a lot of dialogue, but I typically use an external recorder and sleep most of my stuff anyway. Otherwise, for B roll or random scenic shots the building audio is fine. Recording time is limited to 15 minutes per clip in 4K and 30 minutes. In 1080P frame rates of 24p, 30p and 60P are available as well as 1080i and 480p. 1080p video is pretty clean and is very close to down-sampled 4K footage. Dynamic range for stills and video is pretty respectable and it does feature a modest highlight and shadow curve just meant feature that can provide a sort of mild 'S-Curve' reduction that helps to fit the camera is good dynamic range into the 8-bit video files and JPEG's Battery life is pretty respectable for a compact camera can squeeze about an hour video out of a battery and typically a couple of hundred Stills. Extra batteries are relatively inexpensive. My few Grips are: - Being so compact it doesn't have a built-in ND filters and unless you remove the twist-off trim ring around the Front of the lens larger filters, adapter rings and lens hoods tend to bind against the removable trim ring whenthe lens retracts. - Electronic viewfinder is pretty good but smaller and lower resolution then what you typically find on other mirror list cameras. - no external mic input. - compact, noisy, clicky camera controls that interfere with manual adjustments while shooting video. - Lens focus/function ring is generally pretty useful but seems to feature Panasonic's annoying Focus-by-wire variable-speed design that I find counter-intuitive and can actually make focusing more difficult. Also, when shooting video in Auto Focus mode, the focus ring turns into either a shutter speed or ISO dial. I would rather it just disable the function ring completely it's too easy to in advertently change while shooting and I don't see an option for that.

Superb Lens
14 July 2023

I see that cameras in the compact genre of the LX 10 are so often over reviewed as there use as a Vlogging device. To much attention as to how good the 4k video can be.This very fast and superb lens can capture the most amazing stills that will satisfy the most ardent long time photographers. The black and white low light shots are beautiful with a tonal range that is superb.Highly recommendThomas, Whistler,B.C.

Value, fun, quality
19 December 2018

After using this camera extensively for two years, Ive decided to share some thoughts on it. A few words that come to mind when I think about the LX100 is accessibility (both in an economic and practical sense), quality of build and image, and features. Although far from being perfect (or a workhorse), its incredible that such a small camera can pack such a punch. Im not gonna go through specs as you can find all over the net. The fact that you have so many buttons and physical controls for aperture and shutter, viewfinder (rangefinder style) makes this very fun to shoot with. Leica glass is fast and stunning. Low light performance is great (+1600ISO), not the best but considering the price... The things I do not like about this camera are: 1) on/off button location ... MoreAfter using this camera extensively for two years, Ive decided to share some thoughts on it. The things I do not like about this camera are: 1) on/off button location is horrible and camera tends to turn on accidentally a lot; and because the lens in this camera extend when you turn it on, it can damage the mechanical elements of the lens 2) software acts up weird sometimes ex. lcs screen shows foggy image only to go back to normal when tapping lightly with hand. I do a lot of photojournalism, and this is a camera I use a lot for the work I do because of its not a compact non-invasive (intimidating) instrument that carries great image quality, and its really a joy to shoot with.
