Got this today. I had done a ton of research and was so excited to get this bag for my upcoming trip. I ordered it to store, picked it up and when I got home I realized it didn’t come with the backpack straps that were the selling point for me. It is supposed to come with these— MEC just forgot to send them. Because the bag was not in its package and the zippers were all opened instead of packaged in its compact case like the new ones in store (I had ordered online because I had wanted a different colour), I assume it was the on display one at another store or a return, but MEC didn’t check it had all the pieces before they sold it to me. I just called during their opening hours but nobody picked up for a very, very long time— I still haven’t gotten an answer. ... MoreGot this today. Will likely take buisness elsewhere unless MEC seriously sorts it all else, on which case I will update/delete this review.

This is the toughest, lightest and highest capacity (I wish there was 150 L capacity made by Patagonia). Highly recommend for any terrain, travel or hiking trip. The strength of 900 denier, the daisy chain on front, the ability to carry it on your back with straps, and just not adding its own weight. We took it down for Mount Elbrus climb and then Aconcagua. Mules who carried this bag and it is by far the worst transporter for your bag. This one survived and I had to just wash it after the trip to make it look fresh. It is abrasion proof and water resistant. You cannot go wrong with this bag where most bags fail to deliver.

I have the 2016 version of this bag, which has one shoulder strap like a traditional duffel, looks like the 2018 version has the Black Hole shoulder straps instead, other than that they look very similar overall. This bag has the famed TPU impregnated Black Hole fabric, and was my first Black Hole piece (I've since gotten a Black Hole cube and a Black Hole MLC). It sheds water nicely, and is thick and durable to the touch as well as in use. It helps give the bag structure even when empty, so that you can peek inside and see what you have in your bag, as well as pack it, without having to use a spare hand to hold the sides of the bag up.The top U-shape lid is awesome, because it gives you access into the bag in the shape it will have when closed, whereas with ... MoreI have the 2016 version of this bag, which has one shoulder strap like a traditional duffel, looks like the 2018 version has the Black Hole shoulder straps instead, other than that they look very similar overall. This bag has the famed TPU impregnated Black Hole fabric, and was my first Black Hole piece (I've since gotten a Black Hole cube and a Black Hole MLC). There is also a bit of overhang on all three sides of the lid, which helps light rain to not get into the zips (though the zips themselves aren't waterproof/watertight).The main compartment is just a big open space, which is great for me because I use packing cubes, and it also lets you be able to stuff large things (for instance you could shove a sleeping bag and blankets in there). There's enough organization to keep your small valuables safe - the two zips under the lid, the outside zip, and one interior zip.I LOVE the pull handles, they're burly webbing that's of course bartacked at the ends, and the middles are folded over with self-fabric, which gives a bit meatier feel when pulling on them, while not adding unnecessary weight or bulk. The bag is 45L, which is the same volume as my MLC, but due to the shape has a smaller footprint. When you look at it, it looks more like a 25L bag, but it is definitely able to take 45L of stuff, and a little more if you overstuff it. It just looks and feels like a small duffel, but has the amazing capacity to hold enough stuff for a 3-5 day trip easily. This is an awesome bag, and it made me open to getting more Black Hole bags in the future. I think it's great for the gym, overnighters, and also longer trips if you choose and pack well. Great duffel!!

My favourite, go-to duffle. Burly durable construction. Looks as new as the day I got it a few years ago, though I haven't rough handled it or dragged it around the ground, but it would definitely handle the abuse. Backpack straps are ok, but I don't really use them, more useful when travelling. Plenty of capacity for nearly everything you would need for a few days trip. Blackhole fabric is durable and water resistant as well. MEC just needs more colours!Highly recommended as a go-to duffle.
In my previous review, I neglected to mention that the carry handles are smaller/thinner than they used to be. Likely harder on the hands with a heavy load (I will never find out since I am returning mine ASAP).And the snap fastener that joins the 2 carry straps is hard to fasten the snaps quickly - like in an airport line or other hurried situation. Yet another feature of Black Hole bags that has gone downhill in the "new" style versus the old reliable style.Black Hole bags used to be the best large luggage in the world, now it is degraded by gimmicky, counterproductive features.
I've always been an over packer and my husband is annoyed that I always have multiple bags, even for a weekend trip. After a couple hours of research and lots of YouTube videos this was my top choice, and I'm so happy with it! It really is huge. I got the 70L. I'm 4'11" and it's still reasonable to carry, the bag itself is very light. Back pack straps are super easy to put on and take off. Two mesh pockets in the lid are great, and there is also a large front pocket that you can access from inside or outside of the bag. This pocket is also the part you're able to pack the bag into itself for storage. It was VERY hard to even get it OUT of this pocket (how you'll find it in the store) so I can't imagine I'll be storing it this way. The two straps inside to keep your clothes compact are also nice, especially if you have to carry the bag as a backpack. Over all I imagine this bag lasting decades.
I purchased this bag for hauling supplies from MN to teach a Wilderness Medicine course in AK. It was the perfect size for the plane (at the time of this review Alaska Air requires a bag to be less than 62 linear inches to avoid oversized bags fee), and the backpack straps were perfect to walk through airports to get to check-in. The storage pockets inside the bag are cavernous, and ample space for all your gear hauling needs. Also easy to spot at baggage claim. The process to remove the straps before checking in is a little bit fiddly, but once you get the hang of it, its not too bad. I do find collapsing the bag for storage cumbersome. But all in all very durable, and look forward to years of use.
I got two of the 100 L bags last year (the navy blue with red accent and a dark turquoise with yellow accent I no longer see available). Their main purpose is long term international travel when I have bulky items that dont fit in my regular suitcase. Ive only used them twice so far but they look brand new despite being tossed around and hearing them dragged and scrape against concrete floor. Im amazed and so glad I splurged on these rather than settle for a lower quality bag. I do agree with a comment I saw that the compression straps are not as useful as they could be. They could either be external, or if internal should start at the base/floor of the bag rather than halfway up the side which makes an odd pinch point. Another point for improvement is I would have ... MoreI got two of the 100 L bags last year (the navy blue with red accent and a dark turquoise with yellow accent I no longer see available). They could either be external, or if internal should start at the base/floor of the bag rather than halfway up the side which makes an odd pinch point. Another point for improvement is I would have preferred being able to lock it completely. As it is, if you lock the main compartment zipper, you still have the side zipper which opens to an internal pocket which open to the main compartment via another zipper, and there is no way to lock these to deter wandering hands. Still, very pleased with the bags.Im 5ft 4in and am able to carry this with the shoulder straps. Its awkward and I look like an ant but its doable.
I bought this bag for my Kilimanjaro summit and it was perfect. The material is stronger than all the other similar duffels I looked at. It withstood 7 days of extremely rough handling on the mountain including some time left in the rain and it kept everything dry inside. Big enough to put my 65L backpack in along with other gear to carry it all home at the end of the trip. Easy to clean. Still looks new after a lot of use.I wish it came with a regular shoulder strap like most duffels.
This really lives up to its name. I use this as a catch-all for outdoor gear. Tent, sleeping bag, tarp, cooking gear, outdoor clothing, etc. Great to have everything in one spot and can easily throw into the back seat of a car if I need to just grab everything quickly. The one issue I have with this is the compression straps, I really wish they were external. Due to the vast size of the bag, the compression straps do not help unless you layer blankets/other large objects to compress against -small items shift around the straps.
