I was looking for a vest for my walk-workout and to travel to cooler climates and it is mission accomplished with this vest.I would consider this a heavy vest in that it is very warm when working out. I've worn it under a light warm-up jacket and with only a long-sleeve shirt both in mid-50's degree slightly windy situations and I've been very comfortable. As with any type of layering, all that's needed is to open the zipper to vent and let in cooler air. I've seen a complaint about the 'wing' collar but the extra material is needed to make a collar that covers the neck when fully zipped. When not fully zipped, I press the collar down or just let it be. To me it's a minor issue and a function of a full collar.

I have had a couple of these down "sweaters" (vests, actually) from Patagonia over the years, and have found them to be very useful-- warm, versatile, durable. It was getting time to replace my most recent one, so I jumped right on the sale-priced one.I am satisfied that this down vest will continue to be a cold weather staple, with one caveat, and it's not a small one: Patagonia's off colors. Instead of producing normal colors, Patagonia's product designers skew toward strange variations of normal outerwear colors.I selected the Sedge Green because it rendered on REI's site as more of a normal fatigue-colored garment. Upon arrival, I am disappointed to discover that the 'green' is a soft, feminine, quasi-pastel. Not unwearable, but it's not exactly the look I ... MoreI have had a couple of these down "sweaters" (vests, actually) from Patagonia over the years, and have found them to be very useful-- warm, versatile, durable. But as God is my witness, it will be the last.

I’ve used this vest extensively since I received it, and am happy with my purchase. Very light, well made, and warmer than expected vest that works well as either an insulating layer under a shell or as a stand alone garment for cooler fall/ spring days. To date, have not had any problems with the down filling bleeding through the fabric. I would have given the vest a 5 star rating except for 2 minor issues - 1) when paired with a heavier shirt or sweater, the fit around the bottom edge of the vest is tight when zipped up, and seems to be an aggressive athletic slim fit cut, and 2) the stand-up collar always always seems to be in the way.

First, I am the ultimate; and a loyal Patagonia customer for over 40 years. So my criticism of recent update to the classic down sweater vest sis honest and strictly constructive. Note, I currently have 15 down sweater vests in my wardrobe. Functionally, this new design its super uncomfortable when fully zipped with the ridiculously super high collar. Aesthetically, the slanted seams of the new collar design is unsightly and does not allow the vest when open to look cool. When unzipped, each collar falls flat along said seam and the resulting look is just awful. Lastly, Wax Red is not red, its burgundy. Sorry.
Unfortunately, my first experience with Patagonia was not a good one. I tried on the Men's Down Sweater Vest in a Patagonia store and it fit fine. All of my jacks and non t-shirt tops are all Medium. A few weeks later I saw the current version of this vest on sale at Patagonia in Wax Red and ordered a Medium. Unfortunately, when it arrived it was at least 2" short of closing. I have another down vest by another manufacturer in Medium that fits fine. I took the vest to a Patagonia store to exchange it but the clerk recognized it as a sale item and immediately started to ring up a refund. I asked if they had it in Large, but they didn't have any sale items in stock and my only option was to buy a black one, which was not on sale and would cost $100 more! Disappointing product for several reasons. First, it fits differently than the Patagonia wool vest I own and enjoy (Size L). This product is long in the torso and has a high neck collar in comparison. Second, it is a trim fit, which I did not expect. Third, the high collar creates a cumbersome, unattractive spread when zipped three-quarters. Bottom line: I will return it.Incidentally, I am 6-2, weigh 190 lb, wear a 16.5in/35in shirts and have a 36in waist.
I wear this down sweater vest over my cycling kit for road cycling early in the morning (5am-9am) in Southern California. It is typically 40-50 degrees most days during that time frame and this vest keeps my core with ample warmth while cycling. In addition, I wear this casually for work over a long sleeved shirt and sweatshirt and it keeps me feeling warm without any discomfort. The fit is a slim-fit and fits me nice and snug. The quality is certainly exceptional and you can see the difference in quality with other down sweater vests on the market (e.g., your typical average Amazon brands). In short, the average brands purchased on the market fall short on the quality that Patagonia delivers.
I purchased this vest from a local outdoor shop here in town, and I can't take it off. Like literally, this vest has changed the game for me.Before finding this vest, I struggled to find a happy medium of temperature in the wintertime. I was either too cold (Not enough layers) or too warm (Too big of coats). Even my Patagonia Nano Puff jacket can be too warm for me.I had always wanted a vest, so I finally pulled the trigger and purchased one. Following my purchase and the high satisfaction I've received since my purchase, I went online to see other colors. Upon searching for this vest, I was so disappointed with the reviews. Everyone is subject to their own opinions, so I'd like to share mine. The collar isn't too tall. Everyone is subject to their own opinions, so I'd like to share mine. The collar isn't too tall. Yes, it appears to be taller than previous seasonal drops, but it's perfect. When zipped up, it helps keep your neck nice and warm. You can even tuck your chin down in which is so nice. I haven't seen the red in person, so I don't have a strong opinion on it, but I think the slightly darker tone of red Patagonia decided to use for this year's vest is brilliant. It's not overbearing, and without a doubt, it's in style. This vest, matched with a cozy quarter-zip, will turn heads at the ski lodge, a lovely evening dinner with your special someone, or even your business meetings. If I were to summarize my review, I would say this. This vest is warm, in style, and timeless. You can wear this for years, and people will wonder where to pick one up, just like yours.Thank you, Patagonia. You've yet to make something that disappoints.-Ethan
Patagonia's sizing for its clothing has changed over the years and appears to be leaning towards thinner people. Best to go to a nearby store and try on the clothing.XL fits true to size for me, 6' and ~230 lbs. Bought the vest, jacket and hoodie down sweater versions so a matching set, all in (variations of) red.The jacket/hoodie fit differently than the vest. Best to try them on at a nearby store if possible. The vest fits well and snug and relatively warm. Fluff it manually or put it in the dryer on low air setting for a few minutes to fluff up the down.Pockets are not lined but warm since the front has the down layer to keep hands relatively warm and has room for fleece gloves.Be careful as the shell is light and thin and can be snagged and ... MorePatagonia's sizing for its clothing has changed over the years and appears to be leaning towards thinner people. Good to wear as an insulation layer underneath an insulated/down jacket as well.Buy when it's on sale, usually offseason, as Patagucci products are expensive and overpriced.
I have three of these, and was disappointed to see that in the most recent update the neck was downgraded from 3 panels to 2. The 3 panel design set the Patagonia vests apart from other similar vests, and made them more comfortable. With only two panels, it is less flexible than before, and therefore less comfortable.Equally important, the new vests are less filled than the previous generations. I spoke to someone in the store and he agreed that they look more wrinkled because they aren't as full as before. I don't want a puffy vest, just one that looked like it wasn't all-the-way filled, like these do. I hope Patagonia reverts these changes in the future, since these were key to my decision to purchase. It's not good when the quality goes down but the price goes ... MoreI have three of these, and was disappointed to see that in the most recent update the neck was downgraded from 3 panels to 2.
