Background: I received this jacket as a replacement for my original 2018 3-1 parka. After 6 years, the zipper gave way and needed replacing. Unfortunately, Patagonia lost the jacket during the process and offered me a new version as a replacement.Quality: The shell is now a lighter/thinner material than the previous version and seems to be less durable. Firstly, the jacket looks and feels good. The inner layer can be used as a separate jacket without a doubt and can handle on its own. The jacket looks good and practical in many ways. I've had a chance to wear it for a few months in the cold upstate NY weather. It does a good job on windy days where the gusts have been around 44 mph lately. As other reviewers have mentioned, the pocket design is a disaster in my opinion. I own a couple of other Patagonia jackets, but all those jackets are perfect, even their pocket designs are made for your hands. This jacket on the other hand was definitely made to carry items. But, that being said if there is a good sale, it's definitely worth it.TLDR: Jacket good, pockets BAD.

I purchased this jacket to replace my everyday winter jacket. I live in Toronto Canada, and it can get very cold, windy, icy and snowy quickly. I am 5'11, 165 lbs with an athletic build. So far, I have tested this jacket at -10C and it does a good job at blocking the wind and keeping me dry. The double-ended zipper is great. The pockets are great.Despite having a "regular" fit, this jacket feels tight around the chest and arms, especially if you have a hoodie on. So, I removed the reference and am trying again:I bought this coat a year ago and returned after a few time wearing it. The problem was that the down-filling comes through the shell, which was quite disappointing for the price. In addition, although the jacket is highly stylish, I was disappointed with versatility as compared to another brand that I bought long time ago not available anymore.I can live with the versatility issue as this jacket has additional features that can make up what is missing in addition to being more stylish, but leaking of down-filling, was the deciding factor. I hesitated on buying the jacket based on other reviewers noting the pocket issue. Perhaps it's because I am used to resting my hands in front-facing horizontal pockets from other types of jackets (such as wax jackets or shearling jackets), but the hand placement felt quite alright to me. It was comfortable, and the weighted flaps allow it to fully flap down, rather than bumping around by my hand.I also ordered one size larger than my typical size (my typical size is M, and I ordered a L), as this is a winter jacket and I aim to wear a thick sweater inside during extreme cold conditions, and the sizing and comfort was perfect.I haven't tested this jacket out in truly cold conditions yet (i.e. 20F or below, but am excited to.

It's as though they found just the right spot to where your head doesn't get wet but your peripheral vision doesn't get compromised.-Unfortunately, like the Torrentshell, the cuffs of the sleeves tend to wet out in the rain. Otherwise excellent waterproofing.Main Flaw:The rain shell’s vertical handpockets with flaps (with zippers!) are wonderful for holding things, but not hands. Under rain a bit of water will trickle in if you put your hands in them, and for cold or wind the pockets are too thinly lined to preserve warmth (they’re labeled as hand warmer pockets, but fail to live up to that). This is really the biggest shortcoming of the jacket, and something other reviews have pointed out. It’s also confusing because the interior down jacket has adequate hand warmer pockets, but those can’t really be used when the jacket is zipped in. My hope is that the next iteration incorporates something like the old Topley’s pockets—vertical storage pockets and horizontal hand warmer pockets sort of built into that.Again, overall it’s a fantastic jacket, but that does make the few shortcomings stand out (especially because hand pockets are a big deal in cold or rain), and especially so at this price point.
Bought this because my old Patagonia parka velcro for pockets and closure at zipper had ripped and I was told 10 weeks for a warranty repair.So I bought this 3 in 1 because it was half off in store. I am 6’1” and 170 with wide shoulders. Large is a good fit.Definitely could tell the fill on this new parka is less than my old one. Took it to Telluride for and first day at 10000 ft was a white out with 30mph gusts and 20degrees. I had a compression long sleeve and a t shirt on and never got cold. On warmer days it was great being able to zip the shell off and just wear the puffer. Functional and comfortable is how I would describe the Tres. Definitely recommend.

That isn't necessarily a problem, but had I known the limits, I would've bought a higher-level jacket. One of the largest downfalls of the jacket is that the insulating layer is waist-length, while the waterproof shell layer is ~mid-thigh length (depending on your height). Evaluate your needs before buying this jacket. If you don't plan on walking around town in something colder than -25 celsius, this jacket will work wonders. If you don't mind adding another layer to your wardrobe when it does get very cold, this will work as well. Otherwise, you might want something more hefty.

And it's a lot less awkward putting your hands into the vertical pockets when the outer shell is unzipped. That's the only reason I ended up not returning this jacket.The material on the outer shell also has a bit of a design in it where it looks like pinstripes when viewed close-up (at least on the Navy color). It's not that noticeable from further than a few feet away, but it does give it a bit more of a formal appearance than I was expecting. The inner jacket has a bit of a sheen to it that I quite like and looks amazing in the navy color.Another oddity is that the inner jacket isn't the same length as the outer jacket, so the bottom 3-4 inches of the outer jacket isn't exactly insulated and does not do much other than offer wind and weather protection. You can see this in one of the product images on the website, so I realized this when purchasing it, but it's weird when wearing it since it feels a bit like having flaps at the bottom of your jacket. It comes across as form over function; however, it does give a bit of flexibility in that you can just use the inner jacket if you're not wanting a parka length coat for the occasion.All that said, it's an extremely nice jacket. The build quality is great, and I appreciate the use of snaps rather than Velcro on the wrists and flaps. I also appreciate Patagonia's use of Fair Trade certified factories and their commitment to the environment, and I was willing to pay a bit of a premium for that.
