The Yulex impact vest is one of the most important piece of my personal protective gear. The flotation provided by this impact vest has performed extremely well in some of the largest surf I have encountered. Having taught ocean safety awareness around the world, I dare not enter the water without it. Mahalo Uncle Pat- BWRAG (Big Wave Risk Assesment Group)

I’ve bought this vest 2 years ago mainly for river surfing since being in heavy whitewater without a PFD made me unsafe. Though not floating as much as a PFD (I would roughly approximate flotation to 75% of a PFD), it really helps!I’m 5’11, 165 lbs and 40’’ chest and a medium fits perfectly. The material is very stretchy so it’s confortable and stays in place on a thin rashguard as well as on a 6/5 wetsuit. In heavy wipeouts, I have to replace it a little, but no big deal (maybe it’s because I wear small in waist and medium in torso so it’s not as tight around the belly). Maybe a drawcord around the waist could help. The vest is very well design so you forget the padding and do not feel any restriction while paddling.

Great product. Flotation pads are placed in a great spot. Fits well. Tends to rash under the armpits but not sure hoe to remedy that. All around happy with the vest.

Fits well, is streamlined for functional surfing in medium waves of consequence. I really like it. People should wear this product tight. Its best to have more float padding on the back and less on the chest/front.
Bought this vest for E-Foiling. I'm 6'2" 178 lbs and a large fits perfect. It keeps me afloat, and provides lots of foam pads in all the right spots, though I wish they had one on the front bottom ribs. And its made of Yulex which is a must for anybody like me thats allergic to Neoprene. Can be tough to get off since its a pullover, but getting better at it.
First up - I think this is one of the better impact suits on the market as it allows me to paddle on my board normally and largely does its job. 4 out of 5 because of a small tricky flaw. If I'm using this with board shorts - it is simple to tie it to to the shorts and it stays put in heavy wipeouts. Unfortunately if I'm wearing this over a wetsuit, there is no where to tie it down to, and it will often dramatically ride up my body on a heavy wipeout. The only workaround I can think of is to figure out a tie down point on my wetsuit - a project for another time...
I'm 6'6" and a little under 200 pounds - no one has ever called me stocky. I got an XL and this vest is really tight - I can barely get it off by myself. I totally see why this is a good thing when getting pummeled underwater, but I have no idea how some of my more muscular friends could use it. I'm in Hawaii, so don't have to worry about extra layer of wetsuit either. Overall, it is great - love the feel, the removable aspects - but if you are of a not-slim-body-type, I'd really recommend trying this on as early as possible.
I agree with the previous reviewer who said it needs improvement for surfing in Hawaii. I do not surf waves as big as this reviewer, however, I do surf solid well overhead waves on the North Shore of O'ahu.I had a similar experience where the vest was pulled completely over my head after being rag-dolled by a big one.I suggest creating VERY STRONG anchoring points on the front and sides. This would require special shorts with similar anchor points so that the vest can be tied to the front and sides of the shorts. The earlier model vest had side anchors. So I had stong webbing loops sewn onto a sturdy pair of boardies for when I was going to wear the vest. This way I could tie it down to the sides and fronts. It worked. However, my new vest has only a flimsy anchor ... MoreI agree with the previous reviewer who said it needs improvement for surfing in Hawaii. I have been using this for a lower profile pfd for river surfing and it is wonderful. It fits well and true to size. I wear a large/tall Patagonia wetsuit and the large vest fits perfectly over my wetsuit. This has freed me from wearing a bulky river pfd and gives me nice feel on my board. It won't provide as much flotation as a pfd designed for rivers, but it gives me enough extra float, plus it provides a level of armor against rocks in the river. I highly recommend it.
I thought at 58yo I would struggle with a pullover design, but once the surf shop guy told me you take it off by slipping one down and out I tried it and found it easy to get on and off even with tight shoulders. It's comfortable to wear and had saved me from numerous impacts as I wipe out at speed learning to foil. I'd give it 5 stars except I find it rides up on some crashes. That said I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again!
