A Great System Case

My wife and I are wedding photographers and we use a 2 camera system. We typically bring separate bags/backpacks to events which contain our camera bodies, lenses, strobes, and accessories. All of the bags go into a large Stanley work box cart along with other gear like tripods, monopods, stands, lighting accessories, etc. I was looking for a way to consolidate all of the camera specific gear where I don't have to dig around through several bags to find what I'm looking for: bodies, lenses, strobes, batteries, memory cards, etc. I wanted the bag to be strong but portable, secure, with easy access to my gear. Weight was less of a concern. The box is fairly weighty (it is made from thick stock), but it is not meant to be carried around. Weight was less of a concern. The box is fairly weighty (it is made from thick stock), but it is not meant to be carried around. It was meant to be carted around, hence the wheels and retractable handle. If someone told me it would survive a tumble over Niagara Falls, I would believe it. It fits both of my camera bodies with 24-70mm lenses, plus 5 more lenses ranging from a fisheye to two 70-200mm lenses. The Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L fits in the box standing on end. I can also fit 2 flashes and all of my accessories (batteries, filters, memory cards, blower, etc.) into a separate compartment I made for this purpose.I have only a few nitpicky issues with the box, and they are almost not worth mentioning. One is the latches are slightly hard to engage. They take a bit of force to open and close, but this is probably necessary to ensure a tight seal when closed. Another is the egg crate foam in the lid keeps falling out whenever I open the box, but I will soon remedy this with some double stick tape. The retractable handle is slightly low when extended. It's a minor inconvenience for me since I'm not very tall, but those over six feet might find it to be even less convenient. Aside from all that, the price is pretty high considering when all is said and done it is a plastic box, albeit a very useful one. The security and convenience it provides helped me justify the cost.Overall, I'm very impressed with the construction and quality of this box, and the dividers make it customizable to suit the needs of the photographer with a lot of gear. It fits into the trunk of our Nissan Altima, and even loaded with all the gear I mentioned above, I am still able to carry it short distances with either the large side mounted grab handle, or the two grab handles mounted on the ends. It's strong enough to stand on, and also makes a great imprompteau seat. This box is way too large for someone with one camera and a couple of lenses, but for a photographer with a 2-3 camera "system", it's perfect.

Helped a friend with his photography equipment and the case kept his lenses and all that safe while it bounced around in the truck, just remember to use good straps to secure the case down, not bungee cords like we did. :)All in all, worth the price of admission. Id recommend these cases to anyone.

The wheels don't jiggle, but are still very smooth, everything about the case spells rugged. Opening up the case the padding from the dividers were just everywhere. It kind of turns up a little instead of sitting against the walls, because one of the sides is too long. Seems like a small thing, but it actually hinders the setting of all of the other walls in the interior. Does it affect performance? Maybe, maybe not! Anyway, the case is enormous, weighing in at 22lb, empty, there's practically no hope in getting this thing standard airline check-in compliant at 50lb. No matter, it's a great way to lug things around by car, and worse comes to worst, I can always pay the extra bit for overweight luggage. I chose the 1614 because I needed it to carry my portable studio. Here's a basic list of the things I always have in it: 3 einstein e640, cables, 7reflectors, 20, 30, 40 grids, vagabond mini, extension cords, power strips, and a 24 flat panel monitor for on-site proofing. On top of that, there is plenty of space to fit at least 2 more vagabond minis, or another einstein, and other accessories. This is a fantastic case, and I will definitely be getting a couple more down the road!

Dividers completely transform this case.
5 April 2016

I've had similar cases with foam for more than ten years. The Pelicans, as everybody knows, are indestructible. But he foam isn't. With my equipment changing now almost every three years, and going from traditional form factor video cameras to DSLRs with lots of lenses, the foam I had could not be used. And buying foam every two three years can be expensive. So, I switched to the padded dividers and I could not be happier. Or, to be honest, I could. I just wish the divider were a tad stiffer in their core material and the dividers maybe a tad thicker. Not by much mind you, maybe a quarter inch or so. Just my personal preference. Although, I enjoy the case with the dividers much more, you have access to everything quicker, it fits more stuff and overall, I'm very ... MoreI've had similar cases with foam for more than ten years. I bought this case to transport my eleven deep sea fishing reels from my home in Utah to San Diego, CA where I make an annual 10 day long range trip. The case was just the right size and I easily cut the foam to securely hold the reels. The wheels will make it easier to haul the gear down the dock to the boat and not have to carry the load.

Keep Your Production Mobile

I am a videographer who is currently running a small production shoot that involves a lot of travel. Getting the majority of our equipment to various cities throughout the US was proving to be a challenge and the Pelican 1614 Case with dividers was exactly what we needed. The rugged outer design kept everything we put inside completely safe despite being FedEx'd halfway across the country. Almost every piece separated into individual squares so you cabln make compartments within compartments. Overall a really excellent concept. Now onto the nit-picking. The few flaws that it does have are pretty easy to deal with but are worth mentioning. The outside of the case is classic Pelican tried and true but this rendition of the 1610 case frankly looks more or less just thrown together. The divided padding isnt the most supportive material option, sacrificed for its customizable design. Certain deep corners felt a bit bare and I avoided putting incredibly fragile equipment in those areas. Also the outer walls of the dividers dont actually fit flush, they have to bend and bow to fit inside the hard case, implying it was not originally designed for this use. Otherwise a Pelican case is still a Pelican case, rugged and will get whatever you need frompoint A to point B safely. With its pull handle and wheels, moving heavy equipment became a breeze and now we actually keep everything in there since it is more convenient than the original carry case everything went in.

Overall this case is just what I wanted.
13 November 2017

I purchased this case for storing my camera gear between shoots. It is too big for airline carry-on. It seems sturdy enough to consider checking it, but I am understandably nervous about the airline baggage handlers. I personally saw one damage my golf case, and it looked like it was intentional. It weighs 18* empty, so it may be difficult to load up with gear, and stay under the checked bag weight. This one has wheels and retractable handle so transport should be easier. I bought the lid organizer, and it does a good job of holding smaller items (batteries, remote cables, etc.). The lid organizer screws to the lid and the foam does not fit under it. The foam can still be used, but it covers the lid organizer. There are two long dividers that cannot be moved, but ... MoreI purchased this case for storing my camera gear between shoots. There are two long dividers that cannot be moved, but there are plenty of options with the cross dividers. It easily holds 2 camera bodies with grips and 8-10 lenses. I have a Canon 28-300 lens that is 9 long. It fits well vertically, since this case has 10 internal vertical dimension. I gave it 4 stars, because I almost never give anything 5 stars. There are so many different sizes of these cases that the decision was hard, matching dimensions and weight. This case is supposedly watertight, but I have no intention of testing it.

Protect your gear, this case is baggage handler proof.

There is no question that Pelican cases are the best protective cases available. The divider set for the 1610 fits perfectly inside the case. The divider set came with enough dividers for all my equipment. The case is large enough to allow for small items to be placed above smaller lenses. I have no worries that the contents of the case will arrive at their destination in good condition. The cases are big, and when fully loaded will probably exceed the airlines weight requirement for checked luggage and you will pay extra. Small price to pay for protecting your investment. B&H had the best price for this case and divider. Shipping was free, on time, and the cases arrived in perfect condition. It is a great case for carrying your gear in a waterproof container, its also securable and spacious. The dividers are not as good as Think Tank Photo bags, but I can work with what I got.I do wish Pelican would offer a yellow case with yellow dividers however. They offer about 100 cases but don't give you yellow with yellow as an option. I want the yellow case to set it off among other cases, and the yellow dividers to make small parts easy to see (vs. black/black).The case also has a lifetime guarantee which is huge to me.

[Rewarded Review] Second Case in 20 Years
21 April 2021

I bought a 1610 in 2001 and have seen it fall off the airliner luggage load-in belt, sit out in the rain on the DTW tarmac, fall out of van doors and it kept my gear clean, dry and safe. Over the years, the buckles became slightly loose, and on a recent trip, one flipped open while in the bowels of airport luggage handling and cracked off.I was going to buy an empty case because my foam is only ~ 1 year old. It's more cost effective to buy the case plus foam set, and save the foam for later use, than to buy the foam set alone down the road. The people I've met who don't like these complain about the weight. At least this comes with wheels.
