I'm 60 and so have been ironing with steam irons for years. This (Philips PerfectCare Steam iron GC3920/26) is the first one I have tried that uses the OptimalTEMP technology. It is so much better than anything I have used before. The soleplate is always at the lower temperature you'll ever need because the steam is generated by a device inside the iron rather than using the heat of the soleplate itself. I bought this to replace a Philips Azure corded/cordless iron that had been in the family for 25 to 30 years (still working but ready for retirement). While I miss the cordless function, in all other respects the new iron is a wonderful upgrade from what was a brilliant iron in its day. My wash load is often very mixed and I can move from nylon to cotton to wool and back to silk without any problems. Despite what some others have said in reviews, I have had no problems ironing out wrinkles in heavy denim, or in delicates. I did have some water drips in the first few uses, but have not had problems since. The iron does what it claims too (which is a lot) and is a good weight, not too heavy or light. This was bought in mid-February 2018 to replace an old Tefal iron that had given about 15yrs sterling service. I did plenty of research before buying this iron - after reading lots of online reviews I went into John Lewis Oxford Street where I was given helpful information about what was on offer and the different features of various irons. This is OK for short periods but tricky to hold in position for longer periods of time. The only thing I like about it is the long lead, hence the two stars. Next time (and I don't think it will be long before there is a next time) I'll try another Tefal.

I am very impressed with this iron. On first impressions I thought it would be a little heavy for my liking, but actually once I started to use it the weight wasn't an issue at all. The iron itself looks smart and is a good size. I found that the blue light on the handle did shine in my eyes, but I changed my hand position which solved the problem. I read the instruction booklet on opening the product, however these were illustrations rather than written and a little difficult to interpret. I wonder if these could do with some work perhaps. Filling the iron was easy enough, but in my poorly lit living room (and without my glasses on) it was tricky to see where the maximum water level was. Another great feature was the length of the cable - plenty long enough to move around comfortably. After a few uses I am now used to how this iron works and I think it is great. I have always been a slow ironer so this helps to reduce the time taken stood behind the board. How this iron figures out the optimal temperature I will never know, but it is a clever piece of kit that certainly made my ironing experience faster and hassle-free. I would definitely recommend it!
We have two Perfect care irons at home. One is the all singing steam generator (for a big pile) and the other is the grab from the cupboard to iron a couple of things version. It's probably true to say that the majority of us never adjust the temp on our iron unless it sticks. With the Perfect care this is not an option. No temp control at all and never had one stick to anything. The build quality is probably the best out there IMO.

She has been overseas for two weeks and will be comming home to a new Iron after I have tried using it and failed abysmally, The concept is great but this iron does not produce enough heat. When ironing jeans for example I leave the oron on one spot for a few seconds, remove it and the denim is merely luke warm (I would estimate aroundd 25-30C) about the same temp I would select for silks and nylons etc. Our old iron used to apply sufficent heat that it would be almost too hot to touch the denim with the palm of your hand. I spend at least 5 minutes for a pair of jeans trying tot get out all the laundry creases and they still look aweful. The Philips PerfectCare Steam Iron Blue GC3920/24 is a new experience in ironing. Gone are the traditional temperature controls – you can move easily from fabric to fabric and be assured the right heat is being applied. It does seem thirstier than my previous machine, but this may be associated with the temperature control. It is easier to use than its predecessor, including water filling/emptying, and has the best cord storing ever. Myer had a great price on this machine and allow online purchasing using accumulated credit card points.

The lack of user ability to control temperature is infuriating and having to trust the automatic intelligence of the iron makes it an absolute nightmare to use. I had a piece of cotton I was trying to iron to use for a sewing project on the weekend and after 40 mins and no creases removed I just gave up. On my old, basic iron with no fancy features this would have been an absolute cinch. I tried every setting and option on this iron and even looked up the manual to see if I had missed something but it was just hopeless. Definitely going for something more basic next time.
