I started with the first MTB helmet POC offered with MIPS (trabec?). That helmet fit well, but the MIPS liner didn't play nice with my glasses or wearing a head band to keep sweat out of my eyes. The ventilation wasn't great either. I then got the next generation tectal with the spin. That helmet had great ventilation and did not interfere with glasses or head bands, but it was so low on the brow that the helmet almost sat on my glasses. I also have the POC AVIP octal road helmet for road and gravel rides and the MIPs liner gives me similar fits to the trabec, but less so. I ordered the Kortal solely for the color being close to blaze orange. Living in Maine and riding in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont in the fall can be terrifying as everyone seems to be out ... MoreI started with the first MTB helmet POC offered with MIPS (trabec?). And I'm pretty sure a hunter won't confuse me for a deer, moose, bear, or turkey while I'm wearing this helmet.

I'm a huge fan of the POC Tectal. Used it for 5 years without issue. The kortal has replaced it forever. It fits a little different, but seems to fit more people better than the tectal. I have the L/XL and it fits about the same as the Tectal's XL/XXL (just follow the size numbers). It's coverage is similar but slightly better than the tectal. It's a bit thicker in the forehead and back/rear edge areas, but it's not noticeable while riding. It vents at least as well as the tectal, but I have yet to ride in very hot weather.I haven't crashed with it yet, but it has a ton of coverage. But for all that coverage, it doesn't interfere at all while riding. But that's okay. It act like a scoop, ramming extra air into the vents. I'll take that trade-off any day of the week.Fantastic helmet. Quality in every aspect, stylish, and I've no doubt it will be extremely protective.

I got this helmet to replace an older (10+ years) MTB helmet. This one has significantly more protection along the back of the head. The new MIPS system is much better than the liner version of MIPS, very low profile as it’s integrated into the pads and shell. The helmet is fully covered so none of the foam core is exposed along the sides. The fit is a bit more snug around the temples, I suppose if you have a more round head this might not be super comfortable. I got it in size L with a 59mm head circumference and it fits well.I tried my Oakley Sutro Lite + Smith MAG Shift sunglasses and they fit okay. You can't really put them back on with the helmet on your head, you would have to remove it. I wish they would sell POC Asian Fit sunglasses in North America. I think slim arm sunglasses with a curve at the end will fit best with this helmet. Note, the sunglasses holder doesn’t work very well at the back. There are no grip tape applied, it’s just two vents.Overall I’m pretty happy with it.

Love the fit and feel of the helmet. I've owned multiple Tectals over the years and always loved those helmets. Then I read the safety reviews of this helmet and the idea of extra protection sealed the deal on switching to the Kortal. The only issue I've had w/ the helmet is the matte finish on it just doesn't seem that durable. Just from being in my gear bags helmet pocket, multiple spots have showed up on the helmet where the matte finish is already flaking off. I've only had the helmet for two weeks. Wondering if all the ones w/ the matte finish have this issue, or I just got one w/ an issue in the manufacturing process.
I ordered the M-L due to the fact I normally wear a large helmet. It seemed too small at first, which caused me to measure my head and see if I needed the XL-XXL. My head measured 60cm, so I kept the helmet and went to try the XL-XXL in a shop. I found the XL-XXL to be far too large even though my 60cm head should have fit in it according to the measurements. When I tried the M-L back on I moved the adjustable boa-like cinch in the back of the head to a lower position and found it to fit perfectly. So, if you can try it on first to find your size, do so. In my case with a longer narrower head, the M-L fit better even though measurements would put me in a XL-XXL. Also it did feel a tad snug at first but it never gave me any kind of headache.
I was out mountain biking with this helmet and got bucked off my bike really badly. The crash ended with one of the largest head impacts I've ever experienced. I heard a snap in my ears and started freaking out because I thought I had broken something. Turned out the sound was just the MIPS system inside the helmet snapping under the rotational impact so my head didn't. In the end I came a way with little more than the wind knocked out of me. I would credit this helmet with the fact I do not have a serious concussion.Side note: I talked to POC and they are sending me a replacement part for free to put into my helmet. This helmet definitely gave me sticker shock at first but I think in the end it was worth it.you only get one head so I would recommend protecting it
I got the Tectal to replace a Kortal because they fit differently. The Kortal never sat on my head well and would bounce my glasses down all the time. Its a shame because POC's orange is the best and the Tectal isn't offered in it. The Tectal fits much better and I don't have a problem with my glasses.A helmet like this is definitely a for use if you have an upright position like on a mountain bike. It doesn't work well for me on the road but it isn't marketed as a road helmet so I don't hold that against them.My only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that I like high vis helmets.
This helmet did exactly what it was supposed to do. I had the worst mountain bike crash of my life 3 days ago. I was airlifted to my local hospital with multiple broken bones, potential spine/neck injury, and a punctured lung. I did lose consciousness for some period. The helmet breaking upon impact helped displace the force and likely saved my life. I only had to get 3 staples in my head. Will purchase this helmet again when I'm healed and ready to get back on the trail. Wish I could attach a photo of the helmet that saved me.
Looks great, super quality, and will no doubt keep my head intact. Fits unlike any other Helmet I have owned in the past. The rear section of the head cradle has no padding, so it is straight plastic-to-head there, and takes a while to adjust the tension and the fit. At the front, I find the excellent cooling also has the effect of pushing sweat down my face and it can be a battle to keep glasses clear. Also, if you tilt your head upwards, that seems to squeeze the front helmet pad, which then sends perspiration down the face. All in all it is taking some getting used to.
I love the Kortal! This is such a great design from POC. The fit is great, slightly different than the Tectal which I used to wear. I feel really safe riding in this helmet. Good ventilation; amazing coverage. It is a bit on the heavy side, and runs a bit large. Would be cool if it was made in maybe one size smaller. The only thing this helmet is missing is a solid way to store eyewear - my eyewear never stays in the various stowage locations above the visor or on the back.
