Rode mics have improved dramatically over the years. Their modern line is now compact and high-performing. The NTG is rich and well-featured, but heavy and expensive. The Videomicro II sounds pretty good, weighs nothing, and packs easy because it's so small. With the new shock mount design, this is the Goldilocks size. It retains USB-C compatibility, and it takes up much less space than the old shock mount design for the GO II.

As my videography is rapidly expanding into new areas, my needs have grown and this was the perfect addition to my gear. I rented the VideoMic to record my nephew's outdoor wedding. The site was pretty, overlooking a valley, but with a major highway parallel and about 250 feet away. Due to restrictions I set up behind the guest seating with a Nikon D7100 and the Rode. Traffic noise picked up by the mike was minimal and I was able to get clear audio from about 30 feet away with the low pass filter engaged. I was so impressed by the VideoMic performance that I bought my own with the Custom Windbuster Kit. In a wind, there is still some wind noise, but it is minimal compared to the in-camera microphone where the wind just howls. I bought the 10' extension cable so I can use the microphone off-camera with a helper or mike stand. This microphone arrived quickly and was well packed. It is very light, and has some hidden adjustments - it can be re-positioned on its mount. Unfortunately, this mic did not work on my camera - a Nikon P1000. The camera recognised that a microphone was connected, but it did not record any sound. I contacted RODE and Wilkinson but could not resolve the issue so I had to return the mic to Wilkonson who promptly refunded the purchase price.
I was a bit skeptical about this model compared to the Rode VideoMicro. I went for it mainly because of its simplicity, and no need to charge or install batteries. Other users have complained about this mic picking up Wi-Fi radio noises (crackles and pops); but I haven't encountered any of such interference (yet). I know there are other (more expensive) models and brands (e.g. Deity); but this Videomic GO is just right for my simple video recording needs. There isn't even an on-off switch/indicator ... everything is controlled and managed at the camera.
The aesthetic and functional quality of the microphone is excellent! Basically new in my opinion. The shipping was fast and it was well packaged. When I opened the package, I put in a 9v battery, hooked it into my Tascam Dr-60 mkii and turned it on. It worked perfectly and to be honest, the sound quality is better than I expected. It records in stereo and picked up a dynamic range of sounds very clearly and cleanly. I am extremely satisfied with this purchase and will be using this mic as my go to mic for most quick applications. I have an AKG C1000 and an AKG Perception 420, and it sounds as clean or better than those 2 condenser microphones. High quality prosumer microphone that yields high clarity audio in most situations. Assignment: shoot a documentary series for Internet presentation consisting primarily of interiors and talking heads. For this we used the following lighting and photographic equipment purchased from B&H. Our Interfit Fluorescent Lighting set-up consisting of 3 x Super 5's and a Prolite 9 instrument. For photography we chose 2 VIXIA HF R400HD cameras, together with 2 PNY 32 GB class 10 High Performance memories, 2 SONY 32 GB class 10 memories, 2 Duracell 9 V batteries for our mic and a Rode VideoMic. Lighting: the Interface Fluorescent Lighting set up worked great. All of the instruments were lightweight, easy to set up and break down and provided excellent lighting with the diffusers in place. All of our energy consumption was handled easily by two circuits (it could have been one) and we would highly recommend this system for productions that want quality lighting on a budget. Microphone: the Rode VideoMic easily attached the hand bracket that was attached to the camera and the mic consistently provided professional quality sound for our 12 foot throws. Memory: the PNY 32 GB class 10 High Performance memories worked flawlessly in recording and reading our video project. He depended on them and making The SONY 32 GB class 10 memories worked flawlessly in recording and reading our video project. We depended on them and they came through. Batteries: one Duracell 9 V battery provided all the power necessary for the Rode VideoMic. It is rated at 100 hours. We can rely on it with confidence. Cameras: the VIXIA HF R400HD best met our criteria for the shoot. We locked down one camera and roamed with the other during panel discussions. Camera Pros: Excellent picture quality at 35 Mbps, 60 P. Excellent Canon optics. Excellent zoom ratio 35mm equivalent of 32.5 mm x 1,723 mm (but the HD format is as wide as a 35mm 4 x 3 format at 20 mm). Excellent zoom snap manual zoom plus three motor zoom speeds worked fine. Microphone input for professional sound we used the Rode VideoMic. Earphone output we used ear buds. Memory Two hour recording time with the 32 GB SBHC memory cards was essential for the success of this project. Camera Cons: Color temperature the cameras seem to be warm, but they cut well together. No hot shoe we used our own hand bracket for the Rode VideoMic. No threads on lens for additional lens or filter mounts but, we didn't need anything else. No manual control of exposure however, we were able to keep the lighting set-up consistent with the use of a handheld meter. Camera is slow we rated the1/4.85 CMOS at ISO 160, but easily maintained the recommended 100 Lux minimum illumination through the numerous lighting controls and metering. We've been working with B&H for over 20 years in still photography and they have always answered all of our technical questions. Their expertise has been indispensable during this media transition. B&H has always helped us get the quality results we want for the price we want to pay.
This is the best mic I've used thus far. Does a good job picking up sound when attached to the top of my camera. I have yet to use the boom pole but it looks great. Though it's still in the box. TBH I didn't realize I was purchasing a boom pole and dead cat or I wouldn't have got the 3rd dead cat. Still glad I got it for future use purposes. Never know when you'll need one I guess.
I've not tried it in many different situations yet, but so far, each application I have tried has worked very well for this relatively small, and affordable device. The isolation shock mount looks strange, but seems to work very well. Currently I've been testing it as a computer mic for Zoom Calls, AnyMeeting, Teams and Discord and it seems to work extremely well with every app I've tried. I clamped it to a GVM light pole... much better than a webcam mic or even my Sony a7 IV's mic. This is replacing a decades old Sony Zoom Shotgun which was much larger and predates USB compatibility.
This is a great microphone for the price. Very sensitive to voices. I have used it both outdoors and in a quiet studio as a microphone for interviews. In a quiet environment it gives very good voice reproduction with no mike noise or hiss. Outdoors it performs well, but does not reject extraneous sound as well as some more expensive microphones.
