Rode VideoMic Pro Plus On-Camera Shotgun Microphone is a supercardioid condenser shotgun microphone with an integrated Rycote Lyre shockmount, an included rechargeable battery, an improved response over its predecessor (20 Hz to 20 kHz), and improved RF-immunity as well. The microphone can be used to capture audio for camcorders, DSLR, and portable recorders as a source of primary and reference audio. The VideoMic Pro Plus sports a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack termination, outputs a dual-mono signal, and provides a TRS cable to make the connection. A micro-USB cable is also supplied, which can be used to draw bus-power. The microphone's supercardioid polar pattern ensures that surrounding audio is minimized, and that your recording is focused on the subject in front of the camera. Its inherent low-noise circuitry ensures you will not pick up any sound from the microphone's robust innards. The microphone boasts +20 dB settings for DSLR cameras, a flat setting for high-quality preamps, and a -10 dB pad.

Be forewarned, the mic is big.

I am sure from what have read and seen on youtube, the Rode VideoMic Pro+ is a great microphone. But the pictures shown don't really convey how large it is. I am sure it would be fine on a DSLR, but for use with my Fujifilm X-T4 and X-T20, it's way too big. I did not open the inner plastic packaging container because comparing the mic to the camera it just looked too big for my purposes. I am returning it and purchasing a Sennheiser MKE 400. I should have looked at more reviews comparing the Rode size-wise to other mics.

Excellent microphone, unintuitive battery cover.

This camera sounds amazing and overall, it's really simple to work with. That said, the battery door is one of the worst product designs I've come across in a long time. I have worked with microphones from Shure, Sennheiser, AT, Neuman -- Basically all of the major brands. Heck, I even own other microphones by Rode. I have never once before needed to Google how to put the cover back on a battery door because it was so unintuitive. That's the ONLY reason It's getting four stars.

Good Shotgun Microphone, But A Little Pricey.
27 January 2023

RODE compact shotgun microphone works as it is intended. I used for a mini video. The sound quality is very good; it's definitely better than my original video without the use of RODE shotgun microphone. The battery compartment needs some refinement. The enclosure is a little flimsy.

Good mic, super easy to use, durable and light.

Love this mic. The quality has been good enough for my projects, its way better than the built-in mic on my 5D mii. Its small (enough) and lightweight, so I always keep it in a side pocket in my camera bag for when I need it. It takes like 10 seconds to install and turn on.Main drawback: I have forgotten to turn it on on multiple occasions, and if it's plugged in but not turned on then the camera records no audio so you end up without a baseline track to even sync your secondary audio sources to. That's just operator error and not the mics fault. Would I recommend it? Totally.

Great Mic
23 March 2023

New to the video world. Paired this with my Canon Vixia HG G70 (camcorder) works great. Has a good pickup at distance and the proximity effect is way less than my podcast mic.I have used it to record school presentations (on stage), family events and advertisements for work. I would highly recommend this mic. My only complaint is that the auto on/off don't always work on my Vixia, so I would be sure to make sure it is on before shooting.

Great for its intended use

Sound quality on this is 10/10. It's lightweight, and compact enough to fit in your camera bag. The -10 and +20 dB gain options are clutch as well for noisy environments or a distant subject. The only downsides, as I see them, are (1) the lack of internal battery, (2) the necessity of the on/off switch, and (3) the very short 3.5 mm cord.(1) Needing to charge and carry spare 9V batteries is a pain, especially as this is the only device in my kit that uses them. An internal battery with USB-C charging port (OR drawing from the camera's internal battery via hot shoe) would have been ideal for my purposes.(2) The on/off switch is a great battery-saver, but it can also result in a recording with no audio if you forget to put it on & don't have the audio meters ... MoreSound quality on this is 10/10. Risky.(3) The cord makes sense for being plugged directly into the camera, which I think is its primary intended use. However, I'd have liked if Rde had included a 5'-10' extension cord to use this on a boom arm. You can buy the TRS extension cable, which I will now do, but it would have been more convenient if the mic had been delivered with 2 lengths of cable (direct camera attachment + boom attachment) that could be swapped into the device with a detachable input port. All of this is to say: if you're a vlogger, YouTuber, or amateur studio film maker that desires high quality, lightweight audio plugged directly onto your camera, then this is a solid bet. To be honest, most of my complaints would have been resolved by actually DOWNgrading to one of the more entry level models with no switches or battery (e.g., the VideoMicro or VideoMic GO), but nevertheless I don't regret this purchase at all :)

Just what the Video Doctor ordered

I was looking for an audio upgrade for my Canon Eos R system. I use my camera extensively for family videos which I put together every quarter. In the past I have used musical soundtracks for the audio portion but in mid 2019 I decided to go with the actual audio from the videos. I was shocked at how bad the audio was using the Eos R built in mic. Not so much the quality of the audio track as the quality of the audio being picked up. Almost every shot was overwhelmed by my breathing or the clicks and whirs of the older lenses. Or I was unable to focus my audio where I wanted it. All that changed when I put on the Rode VideoMic. I can now get the sound I want when and where I want it. That made it all worthwhile to me. With the boom pole and extension cord I am able to focus audio where I want it from the babbling of a babbling brook to the plink plink plink of maple sap into a bucket. The only thing missing from the kit is a pair of headphones. I already had a pair but it would be nice to have a pair designed for field work. Professionals may want more control over their audio, but for easy-to-set-up amateur recording the Rode mic does a great job.

Mic fine, packaging insane
30 December 2021

Packaging insanely difficult. Both my wife and I tried to open the nearly indestructible plastic container the mic was enclosed in. Couldn't get the two halves apart. Tried the usual calm approach to separate at the seam without success. Then tried scissors without luck, finally resorted to knives. The plastic is so hard and tough it was even very difficult to get a sharp knife in. After much stabbing and cutting attempts the two halves finally separated. It was a difficult AND hazardous experience. The mic works fine but it will always be the unpackaging experience that I will remember. Come on, guys. It shouldn't be the hard!

Yes or No?
27 December 2022

So many people said not to buy a shotgun mic and that I should buy the wireless lav sets. They said that the quality is not the same and that you get a fuller sound from the lav mic. Well I have great news! The Rode Mic Pro is amazing!!! I watched some YouTube videos on proper usage and wham! It's awesome. So I highly recommend this great mic. Buy it and learn about it and you'll love it.Bruce D'Amico Photography
