The first Rokinon lens to feature autofocus, the AF 50mm f/1.4 FE Lens is a fast standard prime designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless digital cameras. The bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well suited to controlling depth of field for selective focus imagery, and also suits working in low-light conditions. The optical design incorporates three aspherical elements to minimize spherical aberrations for cleaner, clearer image quality and an Ultra Multi-Coating has also been applied to limit flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions. The lens' autofocus motor works in conjunction with Sony cameras' AF systems for quick and precise focusing performance, and manual focus override is also available for more refined control. A versatile normal-length lens, this lens mixes a fast, bright design with autofocus to present an ideal all-around optic. A standard prime designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless digital cameras, this lens can also be used on APS-C models where it will provide a 75mm equivalent focal length. Bright, fast f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques. Three aspherical elements are incorporated in the optical design to control spherical aberrations for increased clarity and resolution from edge to edge. An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to reduce flare and ghosting for increased contrast and a neutral color balance. The integrated autofocus motor works in conjunction with Sony cameras' focusing systems for quick, accurate, and precise AF control. Manual focus override is also available for refining your focus position. Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

This isn’t the fastest focusing lens or the quietest. As a matter of fact, it sounds more like an old Canon EF micro motor lens like the 50 1.8 or 1.4 than any of the more “modern” silent lenses, so it’s likely a no-go if you want to use it for video. If you can get past those drawbacks, it’s a pretty great lens. It’s plenty sharp enough and has nicely rendered bokeh IMO, better than some lenses that are much more expensive in some cases. The 50mm focal length is probably my least used, but I do find it useful occasionally, so I looked hard at getting a good value lens.

A wonderful budget option

Awesome Depth of Field, bad autofocus

I use this mostly for photoshoots and general photography, not really for landscape or anything else. The best part of this lens is the depth of field. The shallow depth of field on 1.4 is amazing but you need to be careful cause it is so strong that if the nose is in focus, the rest of face may not be. The lower the light, the less shallow the depth of field is. The Bokeh is amazing. The Autofcous is the only negative thing about this camera. If the subject is moving at all then you have to keep autofocusing cause the depth of field is so strong. It made me started using manual focus... a lot. It made me start really working hard and concentrating to get good shots when I am shooting things like concerts. Which is a good thing. Everything else about this lens is great.

Beautiful look

This older version of the lens is definitely showing it's age in the electronics area. But I gave 5 stars because it was on sale, and for the $ it's a beautiful lens that is very fast. The autofocus is probably the main issue. Compared to more modern designs, it's very noisy, and not super fast. So sports would be out. I do mostly live concert shooting, and some interview work, and even with live mics, it doesn't seem loud enough to cause me audio issues. I use all external mics, so if you use the camera mic it would probably cause some issues. The look, clarity and sharpness are all amazing. (For video at least - I cant comment on how pixel peeping photographers would find it.)

Best budget lens with a F 1.4 but......

This lens is amazing for photography but there are little issues that videographers might want to ovoid this lens. The lens has amazing image quality, but the auto focus is some what 80% accurate. It struggles when objects get a little to close which means that lens has to refocus which it takes some tries, but at the end it locks to whatever you want to focus on. The lens makes some noise when Focusing but it’s not that bad compare to the cheap 50 mm f1.8 lens that Sony sells. I’m not really into video a lot but I wanted to test out the auto focus on this camera and I gotta be honest with you, it’s not really that good because it struggles a little but it’s decent and don’t get me started with manual focus because it makes a lot of noise when trying to focus on ... MoreThis lens is amazing for photography but there are little issues that videographers might want to ovoid this lens. So if your into photography I suggest you pick up this lens as your first lens for you Alpha camera because you won’t regret it. * The bokeh is butter*

Excellent lens at a great price

I was looking for a fast lens at a reasonable price. I also like shallow depth of field, so the f1.4 was a plus. I don't do much video, so the noisy focus was a minor issue. I was somewhat concerned the center focus sharpness while wide open. I will comment on three visual tests. The first was focusing on an orchid with a tripod shot at about 1.5ft. At first I wasn't happy with the wide open sharpness. It is certainly does lose some sharpness at f1.4. The focus peaking didn't kick in when the focusing was magnified. After some practice, I was able to get more accurate focusing. It was still soft at f1.4, but it was very sharp by f2.0. I didn't notice any reduction in sharpness out to the rule of thirds points. I didn't notice any reduction in sharpness out to the rule of thirds points. I also did a test of a printed fabric at about 2.5ft, handheld. I used AF-S for this test. Again, there was some softness at f1.4. But by f1.7, it was very sharp, maybe tack sharp. I continued to take shots at 1/3 f-stop. It wasn't until I got to f2.8 where I could observe more sharpness as compared to f1.7. In low light conditions, the sharpness because of a faster shutter speed at f1.4, as compared to f2.8, the f1.4 was actually sharper. I also played with very tight head shots with focus distances around 2ft. At f1.4, the depth of field is razor thin. My focus usually hit the eye lashes and the focus of the eye ball surface was slightly out of focus. I did have a few shots even at f1.4 where the surface of the eye ball was glossy and sharp reflections with slightly fuzzy eye lashes. Since, I bought this lens at $499, I feel that it was a great value for somebody who has a minimal budget. If I compare the $699 normal price with the $100 off of a 55mm Sony Zeiss to make it $898... the $200 extra may be worth it. It is a bit heavy, but it is fine with me. I love the bocha. Cat's eye bocha was only found in the corners, although still pretty round.

Fantastic lens for the money!

I was really surprised how good this lens is for the price. This is Rokinons first autofocusing lens and it came out at the same time as Sonys 50mm 1.4 but at less than half the cost. I got both of them to see how they compare and which one is more worth it. Being Rokinons first autofocusing lens I was suspecting slow and inaccurate autofocusing but that wasnt the case. Comparing the two lenses the Rokinon actually focused faster but with a few more missed shots. The bokeh looks really good and the lens is quite sharp wide open but the Sony does beat it out. I have a full comparison with sample photos and video on Youtube that you can check out, just search for 50mm 1.4 Rokinon Sony Max Yuryev This lens is a focus by wire (electronic focusing) lens just like the ... MoreI was really surprised how good this lens is for the price. Overall I think this is a fantastic lens and definitely worth it from a price to performance standpoint. Your images will look nice and sharp with a good shallow depth of field if you want it. Rokinons been stepping up their game the last few years and Im really excited to see what Rokinon puts out next!

Good for the Price

I purchased this lens when it was on B&H's deals of the day for $399. This is the first prime lens I have bought. For that price, I'd say this lens is great. I use it with my Sony a7S, and it works pretty well and is impressive in low light. However for full price of $599 or $699 (it seems to go back and forth), I'm not sure I would buy this due to the autofocus only being so-so. If I were thinking about buying this at full price, I would probably spend a couple hundred more for the Sigma Art 50mm lens.Pros:-Great bokeh-Vignetting isn't too bad, and easily fixed with the Lightroom lens correction profile-Aberration isn't too bad either; also easily fixed with Lightroom-Video quality seems to be pretty good-Sturdy feel-Smooth focus ... MoreI purchased this lens when it was on B&H's deals of the day for $399. Great value - of course not as good as native, but worth the price

Bought refurbished - I wanted a 1.4 aperture lens and I wasn't as worried about sharpness. Bout this mostly for the bokeh, and I am not disappointed. The lens of course is not as sharp a $1500 Sony f1.4 50mm (I bought this for the A7iii), but that's to be expected at 1/4 the cost. Overall, I love the colors (a bit warm), and it's certainly sharp enough. The focusing is loud and continuous, and the autofocus is nowhere near as good as my native Sony lenses, but again, that's to be expected. If you're wanting your 50mm lens to be your go-to lens that you use all the time, then perhaps go with one of the others as the autofocus and noise are issues. If you're like me and want this lens specifically for the bokeh effect, you'll be fine getting this. Long story short, if you're strictly a stills shooter, this lens is an absolute must-have. After researching as much as I can about it, I decided to pull the trigger on it since I very rarely shoot as wide as 50mm for my portraits. I'm just blown away by the value of this lens. I couldn't imagine spending so much more for the Sony Zeiss. Sharpness wide open is very good, adequate enough for portraits.
