The Viltrox AF 20 / 2.8 FE is an autofocus lens for Nikon Zmount camera models. With 10 elements in 8 groups, it offers outstanding optical performance. The minimum focus distance of 0.19 m enables beautiful closeups. The quiet STM focus motor can precisely control the movement position and ensures accurate and consistent focussing. A great choice for portrait, landscape, closeup and vlog shots! The wideangle lens is characterised by an enlarged angle of view that is superior to the eye. It differs from normal lenses due to its shorter focal length. This shorter focal length increases the angle of view, the subjects appear smaller and more can be depicted in the photo. Now to be fair this is my first prime lens so my experience is obviously limited. Is this lens perfect and tac sharp absolutely not. Does it take beautiful pictures? Well you be the judge. In the 30 minutes I had before the sun went down today I managed to take a few shots that really impressed me. I did some minor color correction and ticked the lens correction box to correct the vignetting in photoshop. The auto focus is really fast compared to my 24-70 kit lens and the fov is awesome. The lens is really small and light but still feels really nice on the front of my Z8. Seriously if your thinking about a 20mm lens, for $160 bucks you really cant go wrong.

Just got this lens in, a few days ago, and I'm delighted with it. Really good image quality, especially if you stop down just a bit. 20mm is traditionally a landscape/street focal length, so stopping down is SOP, in halfway decent light. The depth of field you get, when stopped down to 5.6 or 8 is insane. Focus on 3-4 meters, stop down to f/8, and pretty much everything is in focus. This lens is such a delight that I think it's going to permanently replace the 24mm f/1.4 lens, in my two-lens kit (1 wide, 1 tele). The 24mm is great, but it's a big, honkin' beast of a lens. The Viltrox is much less obtrusive. If you need a 20mm f/2.8 full-frame lens, get this one. It will be the best $158 you've spent on camera gear.

I don't actually love this lens because composition is a challenge with this focal length: it's hard to keep stuff you aren't interested in out of the frame, and perspective distortion is a big issue. The five star rating assumes you want to experiment with this focal length.None of the other issues I found with this lens are worth taking a star off:1. The lens is reasonably sharp. I've attached a crop from the center and what I judge to be the worst corner on my copy (shot on a 45 megapixel Z8, f/2.8, ISO 64, 1/250 second). You will notice that in the corner crop, the tower appears to be significantly bigger, and tilted. That's perspective distortion in action.2. There is some chromatic aberration in out of focus areas. The lens has a lot of vignetting, which isn't corrected in out of camera JPEG images. I've attached a sample JPEG image.4. The subject distance is miscalibrated on the Z8. It reports a focus at infinity as a focus distance of 10.24 meters in the exif data, and in manual focus mode will show the focus as being well short of infinity. The lens reportedly has some field curvature, but I couldn't spot any indications of field curvature in my photos.Bottom line: not a perfect lens, but good enough for most uses.

Fantastic Value
13 December 2023

The Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 is by far the best value lens for the money. Coming in under the cost of even Sony’s least expensive lens, the 50mm f/1.8, the value is phenomenal. Image quality is sharp with minimal distortion. Focus is fast and silent. Traveling with this lens is a joy and I never felt like I missed a shot because it can capture everything in the wide frame. I have nothing but great things to say about this lens! It even performed well in low light. Don’t hesitate to buy!

For the price, a remarkable lens
19 December 2023

I bought this for my Sony a6700 (aps-c) camera to get a 30mm FF FOV for street photography. In this regard, it is excellent. The lens is small, light and inconspicuous. Moreover, the corner sharpness is reasonably good on an APSC sensor compared to a full-frame sensor. Regardless, for this price it is riddiculously good.[As an aside, I own the excellent Sony 20mm 1.8 G and the Viltrox is slightly softer in the center, and especially so in the corners on an A7RV. That is an unfair comparison, however, given the Sony costs 5 times more.]

Don't expect something as good as the Nikon Z 20mm f/1.8 at this price. Using with a Z5. Build is solid. Focus/control ring is smooth. The corners never get very sharp even stopped down, but I didn't expect them too. Sharpness within the DX boundary is very good wide open and excellent by f/5.6 through f/8. At the DX boundary things start to soften up a bit if focused in the center. However if focused on a subject at the DX boundary the subject is sharp and the center softens a bit. If used for subjects or even landscapes where you have near, middle, far areas and the edges and corners are in the distance this lens works quite well. Better in actual practice than shooting test charts. Contrast is good wide open and better stopped down. Focus is snappy. Face/eye detection and tracking work fine with the Z5 but I would rarely use this lens for those types of subjects. Compact size and lightweight is the reason you go for this lens. If you wan't optimum acuity for poster size prints or weather sealing you will need to spend more. I have used this lens at f/2.8 through f/11, and when being mindful of its optical characteristics I have been very pleased considering the price.

Great lens -- till you try to update the firmware
14 March 2024

This is a great lens for the money. In fact, it'd be a great lens at a significantly higher price point. Its Achilles heel come when you try to update the firmware. The instructions couldn't be simpler: connect the lens via a USB-C cable to a computer -- PC or Mac -- where it will show up as a storage device. Drag the new firmware file to the storage device (the lens) and it will immediately update the firmware. The problem is that using a known good data cable which is USB-C to USB-C will not get the lens to mount on any PC or Mac I happen to own. You must use a USB-C to USB-A cable to get it to show up. And even then, on the current MacOS (MacOS Sonoma), the lens presents itself as having no free space, so MacOS will refuse to try to copy the firmware file over. I’ve been looking for a fairly wide 20mm prime for some time now. I had borrowed a friend’s Sig’16mm but too bulky for canid street, and concealed carry on my a6000. So when I first heard of this and saw a review on “the Tube”, I immediately went to the B&H site to find what they had to say and then it was a done deal the B&H reviewer hit the key areas of all my concerns and from what I’ve experienced so far, he was spot on. Quality of the Lens Reflects in the Price

As a professional photographer, I've learned that it's best to save up your money for quality glass. However, sometimes I like taking a chance on lower shelf lenses because some DO produce unique styles and great photos/videos. I've put cheaper Minolta and Sigma's on my Sony A7Rii and usually the body can easily compensate for the glass quality and I was hoping the same would be for this Viltrox 20mm lens. Unfortunately, it fell way short of what I was expecting -- even after watching several YouTuber's hyping this lens up. It had a hard time keeping focus while shooting video. It was in and out causing a lot of blur. As far as stills go, it produced decent images but when I compare it to my GMaster lens or Sigma art lens, it's not even close. It has a soft blur/grain when you zoom in on the photos -- these were basic landscape images during the middle of the day (definitely no user error). Anywho, save up your money and get yourself a higher quality lens.
