Best digital piano in this price range

Roland has been 100% invested in digital technology since 1972 when Yahama and Kawai were only stretching piano wire . And it shows.I was all set to get the much hyped [rhymes with Hawaii] ES 110 based on reviews alone. Then I actually tried one at a store. The key action was an immediate turn off - not only were the keys light (designed for weak fingers), the rebound noise was just *awful*. Every key release resulted in a very audible 'thud', and on top bounced a couple of times too ! There is a YouTube video on this. Look it up. Key action is very pleasing - they have just the right amount of resistance. Not overly heavy, nor too light. Sound quality is second to none in this price range as Roland has invested heavily in DSP technology. The modeling of the dynamics of piano sound is also very realistic. Roland says they generate tones on the fly based on a baseline sample (recorded from a Steinway grand) and applying proprietary digital filters depending on finger action, while others like the Yamaha (in this price range at least) simply play one of various recorded samples. Regardless, the sound is very very authentic.A common misconception about the FP-30 is that it's too "bright" and not suited for Classical pieces. The first part is half true and the second part is completely false. It is true that the default piano tone upon power-on is Grand Piano 1 which is ever so slightly on the bright side. But there are three piano tones available. The second, Grand Piano 2 is a little mellower, but not only that, there is a parameter called 'brilliance' (brightness) which can be adjusted. The reviewers who claim the Roland is "too bright" don't tell you this. When I am playing Classical (Debussy, Chopin, Beethoven..) I select GP 2 and set Brilliance to -2 (minus 2 ) and the sweet richness of a concert Steinway Grand fills my ears.All in all it's a lovely digital piano and has grown on my in the three months I have had it. If I had to nitpick I would say Roland should have added an AUX out (line out) to the unit but the once or twice I played through an external amp, the headphone out seemed to work just fine. Otherwise a fantastic piano. I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Classically trained pianist

I am classically trained in piano, but quit years ago. I have not had a piano in 15 years. I bought this to play again. Growing up in the 80's and 90's, I had the fortune and joy of rehearsing on a 6'3" Baldwin grand, recitals on Steinways. I swear that the action on this keyboard is just as good, if not BETTER than I remember on those incredibly expensive instruments back when. I can be as expressive as my skill allows on this keyboard. The tech has progressed much farther than I expected. The FP-30 has exceeded every one of my expectations that I had for it, except for one; the bluetooth app. It's not awful, but it's no VST.

Good but not perfect... a few points of criticism.

As we all know Roland has been making great products for quite some time and this item is no exception, especially at this price point. It's high on the value scale.A few points of criticism:1. The connectivity with the app has been intermittent with my apple devices and fails wholly on my iPhone 8.2. The output level is low, out of the headphone jacks. I have it maxed out while using it with sealed headphones and I wish it was louder.3. The pre-recorded songs which would actually be a nice feature to use if you were having a gathering at the house or something are poor. The are very mechanical in their performance and have no ambiance setting that I can find. Playback is flat. Great upgrade to older Electric Piano

SO we had purchased a Williams Allegro when my young sons started taking piano. Served well for the first few years but does not have ideal feel and dynamics.Purchased a Casio CGP-700 for our oldest (also a pretty nice device) which yielded a lot more practicing. But our middle boy has proven to be the real gem of a player and was suggested we purchase a Standard piano. Not really an option in our home. We struggled until we found this unit on sale here at Adorama. He LOVES the piano. The feel and sound. From a playing standpoint it is the best device in the house. Cannot recommend enough for a small excellent performing device in the sub $ And on sale at Adorama it was a done deal.

I like this piano!

I am a professional pianist and piano teacher. I purchased this instrument without having had an opportunity to first play it. At 31 lbs, the piano is about 5 lbs. heavier than my Yamaha P-105, but the weight is still manageable, and I am quite happy that Roland has finally produced a piano that is easier to transport. I primarily use the grand piano sound, and I like all three grand piano sounds, but I am not blown away by the sounds in the mid-range. Perhaps my expectations were too high. My greatest disappointments with the piano are the following:1. The headphone jack must be used to amplify the piano, so it is impossible to use the internal speakers while also using external amplification. I truly miss the external output.I purchased a Roland FP-5 in 1992, and I have loved Roland products for many years. I am so happy to finally have such a lightweight piano with such a high quality sound with the FP-30, but it would have been nice if the built in sounds and rhythms were more accessible and useful, and if the piano had an external output other than the headphone jack.

I’m no piano expert but I would really reccomend this for anyone serious about their playing. I had a cheap basic keyboard and realised I was quite good and wanted to take playing further. I initially wanted to go for a different brand like Yamaha or Korg but it was evident when I tried them all that the Roland had a better feel. Each key is individually weighted Where as most brands are graded. As my skills get better I won’t need to upgrade for a while as this a great product. You get what you pay for essentially. And the price at Andertons is quite reasonable considering you get a stand, headphones included. Go with your gut!

Review of Roland FP30 Portable Digital Piano in Black

Great keyboard, with a realistic and enjoyable action that is highly expressive. It sounds great too, with detailed piano samples and good quality speakers. Finally, it's impressively light and compact and will be portable when needed. Bluetooth MIDI is very handy too. Kawai E110 is another good alternative I've used before, but I prefer the extra buttons for choosing sounds on the Roland, while the Yamaha options lacked bluetooth MIDI. However, the FP30x is coming soon and will add bluetooth audio to an already impressive keyboard.

This piano feels very real, sounds very real, good value!

How much do you want to spend on a piano? If you want something that feels real and sounds pretty real - get this one.Obviously there are better models with more features. Very Nice Package!

So I just starting learning the piano and needed an 88 key piano. I didn't want a heavy one so we could easily move it, so I bought the Roland FP-30 package that included the wood stand, pedals, bench and cover. The sound of the piano is awesome and feels like an acoustic, which I wanted. Because I started pretty early on this, I didn't have to retrain my fingers too much on how hard to press them. I'm short so I have to put a blanket on the bench to raise me up. Wish it was adjustable but this will work for now. I use the pedals a lot, mostly the SUS (rt) one and then I hooked up the MIDI (I prefer the cable rather than bluetooth) so I can use the left & middle pedals to change the pages on my Mobilesheets app where I store all my music sheets. Came in 5 different packages. Easy to put all together. Love my new piano system!!!
