Think of them not as hammer drills but as handheld jackhammers than also drill. They pack a power and utility that a standard hammer drill will never have. My standard drill takes so much longer. When testing out the hammer mode, my tile and scaling bit was able to cut bricks in half quickly and comfortably. I haven't gotten a chance to remove thin-set yet but I have no doubt it would work great. The only things that stand out as small issues is it's crazy battery consumption which is obvious given it's power. The other is the lack of a pointer or easily visible indicator on the mode select. Putting a spade or scaling bit in and activating the trigger only to find you are actually in drill mode is annoying. All in all these are super handy to have if you can afford them and pack a power your regular cordless drill will never have.

I decided to repoint my rubblestone foundation. I needed to remove the old mortar to a depth of 2 inches. To make the job easierI looked for an sds tool and would use the breaker setting. The Ryobi 18 volt was the perfect tool. It was light yet powerful enough for the job.I figured it would take lots of batteries because the first one died in 15 minutes so I kept 6 batteries on my chargers. This is the only reason I did not give a 5 star rating.I also used it to drill a number of homes in concrete. It worked perfectly.Considering this tool? I recommend you buy.

I tried mixing concrete with it and after a few seconds smoke started coming from it. it should have a better shut of on it for when it is overloaded.I never used it after that. other than that it is fine. last year I drilled a bunch of holes with it in concrete and it was fine. I even chipped some ice with it with a chisel tip! but don't try chiseling concrete with it because it's not powerful enough for that as it is an 18v.

The entire line of Ryobi are fabulous tools. The Ryobi SDS plus rotary hammer drill packs a real punch. I drilled a 1 1/4 inch hole through my basement poured concrete wall, 12 inches thick, with ease. Used a 4amh battery with plenty of juice left.
It is a good small rotary hammer, chipper. I hoped it would drive 5/8's inch rebar into regular ground for 2 feet seeing a video that it drone in a 6 foot rod. However, tests in my lawn on went in 6 inches.
The Ryobi P222 is a reliable, light weight and reasonable powerful tool for a number of small jobs. It's not a replacement for high power units for industrial work but great for around the house projects or light contract work. So far, very pleased with its performance and the amount of work that can be done on a smile battery. Definitely recommend this unit for the general handy man or part time contractor.
I usually call on my Boschhammer rotary for most of my brick, block and stone work. But, occasionally I do stuff that calls for a lighter, more portable tool. I have a Bosch 18v rotary hammer that is an absolute jewel, but it is only a two-mode rotary hammer drill. It can't do just hammer only. So, I figured I would try this little Ryobi, a true three-mode drill. It is light and quite capable of handling all but the heaviest of my hammer-only chores. I picked it because I have a bunch of One+ tools already, with a wide choice of batteries as well. With a 4.0 Ah battery, this tool is still very light and handles like a dream. Lots of tool for the money. I love it.
This is my second sds tool. Same model, the first one, after 6mos the chiping feature was weakening. Bought another one and the selector seems to be acting up from sds to hammer drill. You would need to push back the bit before it operates. Maybe I just have the bad ones. Hammer drill on concrete works great.
Bought this today to remove 200 square feet of marble and ceramic. While it did an ok job with the ceramic (just ok, still was a lot of effort) marble was impossible. Took about 5 minutes just to get a chip away. Unit over heated, then went right back into the box.If your doing anything other than thin ceramic, save yourself the time and effort and go to the rental center to get a real Rotary hammer. While I can see this being great for drilling, it's chisel function is a joke.Not an anti Ryobi guy, I have about 15 tools from their collection with no complaints. This tool though, is a waste of money.You get what you pay for.
confidently and comfortably held in hand, it drills a 6mm thick monolithic concrete (floor) quickly. hand does not get tired, this is a plus. backlighting is purely symbolic, so to see at least something. for small works to break, drill - just super. tested on 4Ah battery. I am satisfied with the price - quality - convenience.
