I got the Shield version for more protection against drops since I'm pretty rough of my electronics (I think it is an extra meter of drop protection), I go into the wilderness a lot with my photography, and I get rained on pretty frequently. The drives have a silicone jacket on it, which also makes it much bigger than the T5 I have. These drives according to H2TestW (if my memory serves me correctly) was around 437MB/s read and write, while plugged into USB 3.0 ports on my computer (that is the fastest port I have). This is plenty fast, and I think on par with my old Samsung T5 drive. With the overhead in the USB 3.0 protocol, I think I maxed out the ports on my desktop PC. Might be faster, if you have faster ports!I do have some complaints about the product however. The silicone surface makes it impossible to stick a label with your name and contact info on it, which I do on my old drive. It would also appear some bean counter at Samsung decided to skip on the 2 cable ties that original came with the T5 drive. I wonder how much money they are saving, but nonetheless I will reflect it in my review!

I purchased this drive from BestBuy in May of 2023. I've now had the drive for a year and four months. Yesterday, it began to fail.So to start off, the read/write on this drive is advertised as 1GB (1000 MB) and most I would get from BlackMagic's Disk Speed Test was around 500MB, which was unfortunate, but I had the drive and used it.I plugged it in yesterday, and it wouldn't mount. I couldn't repair it on my MacBook. Thankfully, a friend suggested connecting it to another Mac, which I was able to do, and the drive mounted. I was able to transfer files off, but it could not be repaired. It's no longer writable. I hope all my files are fine, but I won't know till I try to use them. This was very disappointing. I'm currently using the Samsung T7 Black 2TB drive from a client as my working drive now. I have two other Samsung drives. This one giving out makes me concerned about purchasing any more Samsung T7's which is TERRIBLE because they were a great option for my camera storage.Just to give all buyers a heads-up, this drive was regularly $349.99 at the time I purchased it. It was on sale for $219.99. And it is now currently $319.99 (was $499.99), which is a big jump. Not sure if lower price means "bad batch," but that was the case with the SanDisk Extreme Portable 4TB SSDs a year or so back. Even if it's not, this price jump on the Samsung T& Shield 4TB is really predatory for Samsung.

I've been using this external drive as a way to back up my main storage drive on my PC, which is an HDD (4TB). So far I'm happy with the performance of this drive. I love it's size and managing the drive is very easy using Samsung's magician software. It was also very easy to register the drive on the Samsung website - using the magician software, you can actually see the serial number of the drive in the "drive details" section of the Magician software, making it super easy to find/use the serial number to register the drive on Samsung.com after making a consumer account profile. As an aside, I also have installed a Samsung EVO 870 2.5" drive and my system is installed on a Samsung 990 Pro 1TB drive. The magician software was a lifesaver here since I otherwise ... The magician software was a lifesaver here since I otherwise would've had to take apart my computer to find the serial numbers on those drives, especially the 990 Pro to which I had added an aftermarket heat sink. The Samsung magician software that comes with this T7 shield drive also allows you to run diagnostics on the drive to check its performance and health. It also allows you to easily use the drive to transfer your old system onto it and make it a bootable drive if you plan to upgrade your current computer with a 980 or 990 Samsung SSD. The T7 shield comes with a 3-year warranty, as I saw after I registered it online. That's lower than the 5-year warranty that comes with the Samsung internal 990 pro and Evo 870 2.5" drives, unfortunately. Overall, I have to give it 5 stars and I plan on buying another one for my kid's compuer.

Also wrote a review for the same 2T drive in Beige. Very fast and rugged Solid State Drive without any moving parts. Comes with 2 USB cables....the drive is the new C type and the difference in the 2 cables is the end that goes to the PC. One is type C male and the other is type A male at the PC side. The connector on the drive is type C. Regardless of USB connector this drive is USB 3.2 Gen2. My understanding is this 3.2 version of type A is something like at least 10 times faster than previous versions of USB. C type can go in either direction when plugging in and the same exact pins are connected either orientation. Notice that no USB symbol is on a C type connector as it designates which side will go up for female horizontal slots and the USB symbol on a type A ... This drive comes with a "Samsung Portable" software program which simply allows you to set a password to access the drive, for security or privacy. DON'T FORGET THE PASSWORD. WRITE IT DOWN IN A FILE FOR EXAMPLE. This is a very fast and rugged and water resistant drive. I had a "G Drive" before which is a ruggedized SS version of a Western Digital Drive. I prefer this Samsung SS Drive instead and don't use the G Drive any longer, but they are also good drives. I bought 2 of these same T7 Shield drives, in different colors to identify and I bought the second drive after using this blue drive for at least a year.
I'm a System Administrator at my company and when it comes to portable storage for backups, sensitive information, or even personal data, my go-to has been, is, and will be Samsung.I've had several Samsung portable SSDs throughout this years, but there's a special place in my life for the T7 Shield ones, for several reasons:1. They're just timeproof, I've had a couple with 4TB capacity for almost 3 years now, I use them every day since I have my personal files and games there, and they're as good as when I first used them.2. They're very sturdy, I take good care of them, but accidents happen, and I've had more than a few, I've dropped them, dropped some solid stuff on them; even one day I fell and my T7 Shield flew for a bunch of feet before impacting a wall and ... The rubber cover is just amazing.3. The speed of these little guys is insane, I've transfered heavy files (over 50GB) in just a few minutes.4. Speaking of accidents, I've dropped liquids on them (my water bottle tipped) and absolutely nothing happened, it was then when I believed that they really had an IP65 water and dust resistant rating.Overall, it's a great product with great capabilities and features, it's not expensive, and even if it is more expensive than other brands with the same capacity or speeds, just remember, features makes the difference, it's better to have them and not need them, than need them and not have them.

This is my second external drive that I have used for my constant ‘drive’ instead of the internal drive inside my computer. If that doesn’t make sense,,,,my intent is to have all ‘important to me’ files, pictures, whatever on a safer physical location. I work directly from this external drive, it’s not just for backup.Years ago my computer crashed and only part of the info could be recovered from the internal hard drive. The backup that I had created and used faithfully, well, it needed a special program to do recovery with it and was very expensive with no guarantees. And lastly, my experience with the clouds has been that things come up missing and there is no good explanation.I say all that to make the point that it gets used a lot. Quite a bit of data ... Quite a bit of data transfer back and forth. This little T7 Shield has been wonderful! I haven’t had any hiccups. The speed is amazing. My previous external drive was a Toshiba which was not a SSD drive. It seemed to be plenty fast and performed well for many years but the T7 is outstanding. Plus, I feel more secure with a drive that doesn’t have moving parts. If some of you more tech savvy ppl reading this are rolling your eyes at some of my choices and comments,,,,,yep, I’m just a daily tech user who is trying to make my way thru this digital environment.

This is plenty fast, and I think the same speed as my old Samsung T5 drive. With the overhead in the USB 3.0 protocol, I think I maxed out the ports on my desktop PC. I've seen people with faster ports get faster speeds from this device, so your results may be better than mine.I do have some complaints about the product however. It would appear some bean counter at Samsung decided to skip on the 2 cable ties that original came with the T5 drive. I guess they don't care too much about customer satisfaction, but I will reflect that in my star rating.) Also the silicone surface makes it impossible to stick a label with your name and contact info on it, which I do on my old drive.
The Good:- Pretty good speeds. hooked straight into my PC Mobo, I can't achieve the speeds on the box of 1,050 MB/s (sustained), but I usually get around 100 MB/s, which helps transfer large swaths of data fast.- Colors, more than just 1. At least if you get the 2TB version. If you get the 4TB version you are stuck with Black. Hey something a little more pleasing to the eye, Beige or Blue.- Slim Profile, well it is an SSD- Outer shell has a texture that imparts some friction on table surfaces and hands. Should help with mitigating slippages and drops. This also probably helps contribute achieve the IP65 cert- Comes with a USB A to USB C cable, and a USB C to USB C cable. Helps a lot if a computer someone has does not have a USB PortThe Bad:You HAVE, HAVE ... Helps a lot if a computer someone has does not have a USB PortThe Bad:You HAVE, HAVE to use the cables provided in the box. Using any other cable might just make the drive not work with a computer (I was using a Paracable Paraflex USB-C cable before I used the one in the box). And the cables are short (~6 inches for the USB-C to USB-C cable). So if you want to have some reach outside of a device or computer, you're pretty much out of luck.Using any other cable seems to make data transfer slow and buggy as heck (getting Error 0x8007045D constantly, stopping data transfers). But as soon as you use the cables provided in the box, the SSD comes to life and works as expected. It's just a shame that you HAVE to use these short cables included in the box and nothing else, which means you better put these cables together with the drive in a bag, or put everything back in the box when you are done. Because if you don't, and you lose one or both of the cables included, you may as well throw the drive in the trash, because it effectively won't work with any other 3rd party USB-C Cable.
