I cannot recommend or depend on this ssd. What’s the point if it’s just going to fail. I’ll be reaching out to Western Digital soon to see anything can be done. None of my other drives, various brands, sizes, ssd and hd drives, had this issue.

I received this portable SSD drive for free from Influenster and SanDisk in exchange for my honest review. The SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD is extremely impressive and affordable. This device has 1TB space which is a lot of space for a portable device. It has plenty of room for me to store my files, pictures, videos and more. Its download and upload speeds are super fast. This SSD drive is portable, durable, convenient, and universally compatible. I was able to back up 50MB in just a moment. The device is a light grey color and is super lightweight with a nice velvety grip. The price point is perfect for how well this device works. This brand is also very well known and reputable. Sandisk / Western Digital “WAS” a name I trusted for years until recently. See recently I connected my SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD 1TB just like any other time and that was to store files on it as it is a “Portable External SSD” made to SAVE FILES SAFELY, or so I thought…I thought wrong this day.I connect my drive to my 17" Dell 2 in 1 laptop like many times before, saving irreplaceable files (because you know that’s what external drives are for) as I am transferring my files I get a call so I answer it and walk away while my files are still transferring. To come back 5 minutes later to a familiar hot plastic smell and slight chemically smelling smoke so, i’m checking here and checking there…nothing…until I sit down at my desk and notice my files are done ... MoreSandisk / Western Digital “WAS” a name I trusted for years until recently. To come back 5 minutes later to a familiar hot plastic smell and slight chemically smelling smoke so, i’m checking here and checking there…nothing…until I sit down at my desk and notice my files are done transferring, so I go to disconnect my Sandisk extreme 1TB SSD only for my hand and fingers to be greeted with extremely hot melted plastic ( the outer case of the SSD). Mind you I am using the cord meant for it and have always kept it in the case that it’s meant to be stored in. Never been dropped or gotten wet etc… etc… etc… but for some reason this day it decided it wanted to OVERHEAT itself so bad that it melted the plastic around the USB-C port all while COMPLETELY DESTROYING SAID USB-C PORT, charred like Ghostrider had it stored in his thinking cap. Heres the best part WD/SANDISK…I want to personally thank you for the trust I had in your product only to make it to where I CANNOT RETRIEVE my around 930GB of data I have on that SSD …OH OH AND…About 46GB of that 930 were IMAGES/PICTURES/MEMORIES OF MY DECEASED FATHER THAT I CAN NEVER EVER EVER GET BACK OR GET REPLACED SO THANK YOU SANDISK FOR THAT. Silly me thinking my files were safe inside your product, I know I know my bad right?! Life stole my Dad early in his life and you came through with the encore of your failed product to take undeniably non replaceable visual memories from me also. WD/SanDisk any of you sat next to your father and had to shut off the life support machine and SIT WITH YOUR HERO AS HE TAKES HIS VERY LAST BREATHES WITH NOBODY IN THAT ROOM WITH TO HELP YOU THROUGH IT…HAVE YOU??? THANK YOU WD/SANDISK I WILL NEVER USE ANY OF YOUR PRODUCTS AGAIN. BUYERS BEWARE PLEASE!!

Fast and reliable, perfect for backing up

After using smaller Extreme portable SSDs as MacBook Time Machine drives (one at home, and one in the office, hanging off a USB-C port on my Thunderbolt dock) for some time, I upgraded to a larger MacBook and needed more space.I looked at a larger Extreme briefly, but decided to go for the Pro instead to get the 2 GB/second speed and wow, was it ever worth it.Backing up and restoring large files are now lightning-quick. I get full speed when I connect it directly to the USB-C port on my MacBook. My dock will only do 1 GB/sec, but because it's in the background, for convenience, it works out rather well. I can always move the drive back to a direct connect port to get full speed again. The bottom line is this: I trust SanDisk to do solid-state storage. It worked until it didn't

One day, my SSD drive stopped functioning. Neither my Mac nor the other five computers recognize the drive due to an underlying issue. I attempted to connect it to a Windows system but encountered the same problem. The most frustrating aspect has been the lackluster "technical support." They bombard you with irrelevant questions, seemingly aimed at wearing you down to avoid providing a replacement. For instance, one technician asked, "Were you able to unlock and access the SSD earlier on your Mac?" Despite having two backups of the drive, I unfortunately couldn't back up the latest files before it failed. While I understand that hardware can malfunction, being subjected to demeaning questions by "tech" personnel solely to prolong the wait time is exasperating. Multiple Defective SDD, Loss Data, Waste of Money
10 January 2024

I purchased 2 of these at the same time in-store back in April 2023. Less than 3 months. June, I had one of them "unmount themselves", or unexpectedly disconnect from my Mac computer. As a photographer, I bought these for the ability to safely store my photography. Best Buy, still sells these and they are defective. SanDisk knows they are defective and they continue to sell them and not disclose the public. The product is suppose to have a 3 year warranty and they have even lasted that long. Western Digital which is who owns SanDisk is allowing consumers to buy defective products and if they can't repair or recover the item they give you a refurbished. New V2s have problems with M1 Macs
9 November 2023

I've used 7 of these drives. The original versions have run for a couple of years and been flawless including 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and a 4TB drive. I purchased two new ones (yellow version) from Amazon in the UK. One is working - but the other failed to mount 90% of the time in 3 different M1 Macs and with 4 different cables. It was sent back, and the new disk is exactly the same. None of the disks are listed as requiring firmware updates on the WD site and Macs are all running latest OS versions. The one that is working perfectly is currently plugged into an M2 Mac. I would like to see SanDisk admit there is an error with these (given the numerous reports even here on its site) and work to identify a fix for them as they are superb drives for back up and I'd like to use again.

No Mac has the USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 to get the 2000Mb/s

Beware! To get the 2000MB/s Extreme Pro speed needs USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, no M1 Mac has this. After much testing with an Agent from Western Digital, who own SanDisk, reformatting several times - which does make a significant difference to speeds, the best I could get on either an HP ZBook with thunderbolt 3 (so capable of 5000MB/s) or on a M1 Max MacBook Pro with its USB4, (also 5000MB/s) was around 950MB/s.Even the WD agent did not know that this drive needs a machine with a very rare USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 to get anywhere near the 20000MB/s speeds (not just USBC, but this specific variant of it). No Mac M1 or Intel, has this connector.Ironically, SanDisk uses an image of a MacBook Pro in their marketing shots, as shown on this website.I don't think I can include a link here, but there is a good article on Premiumbeat called Pushing Today’s Speed Limits: SanDisk’s Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2, which explains in full.A very well-made little drive, but what a shame it's not Thunderbolt 3 or 4 (also in USBC format). If you have a Mac, learn from my expensive mistake, save yourself some money and go for the Extreme, not Extreme Pro. You will get the same performance. Or search for a thunderbolt drive that can give the 2000MB/s speeds and more. There are also a review on here from people with Mac Studio with response from Will at WD suggesting he tests the cables etc. That might change something, but his Mac just doesn't have a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, nor does any Mac ever built as far as I'm aware, so he will only ever get half the claimed 2000Mb/s whatever cable he uses, so poor advice from WD there too.

Slow R/W even with Thunderbolt 3, crashed after 1 week
4 February 2023

I've used this with a 2022 Macbook Air M2 and 2019 MBP i9 for the last week. I got this disk to have faster R/W speeds than my Samsung T7s. The claimed R/W speeds on the M2 Air was to my surprise as low as 950/911 mb/s with the supplied cable, even with 40GB Thunderbolt 3 as referred to in the top critical review. The R/W are identical on the M2 and the Intel MBP, and identical with APFS and ExFAT file systems. That is a bummer.Anyway, onto my biggest issue. The disk was used for assembling time lapses and drone shots on set (Air) and then offloaded in the office (MBP). So a lot of files, but less than 2 TB for the week.On the last day of the week the disk was mounted in the intel MBP and I was going to copy some more files to it before doing a clone backup with ... MoreI've used this with a 2022 Macbook Air M2 and 2019 MBP i9 for the last week. The disk was used for assembling time lapses and drone shots on set (Air) and then offloaded in the office (MBP). So a lot of files, but less than 2 TB for the week.On the last day of the week the disk was mounted in the intel MBP and I was going to copy some more files to it before doing a clone backup with Sync Folders Pro. I got error codes in Finder (-36) that some information could not be read or written. I unmounted it, and tried to re-connect it. It shows up in Disk Utility, First Aid completes like it should, but the disk does not mount on the 2019 MBP, the 2022 M2 Air, a 2021 M1 Air on an older MacOS (the two first is 13.2, M1 Air is 13.0)File system on the disk was APFS. I tried a number of online advices like First Aid, deleting old time machine copies (this disk was not used for this), mounting to older versions of the OS, killing fsck on Activity Monitor, running /sbin/fsck -fy from Terminal - all to no avail. This may very well be a MacOS bug, but this has never happened to any of my Samsung T7s during the last 2 years of intensive, similar use. So the obvious variable left is the Sandisk Extreme. The disk was mounted on Thursday, critical files were backed up like normally, and then Friday afternoon the disk and its content was simply inaccessible. It was connected to the intel MBP the whole time.I will not trust this disk for any important footage from now on and frankly with its dissappointing R/W speeds with the M2 it has lost its intended purpose. If this had happened one day earlier all my work from that day would have been gone. I could have put time lapses together again from the camera cards of course, but it would have caused me 8h of extra work.I did a full scan with my Nexto Di device after the eventual format (image) and it does not seem to be anything wrong with the storage modules itself.Don't know what went wrong here but this disk failed when the Samsung T7s did not.
