Bought this drive in September of 2011, Dead as of today, March 15, 2012. I advise anyone who is considering buying a HD with the name Seagate, or Barracuda in it, to reconsider. Do your research, there are countless forums and news articles about the stunning failure rate of the Seagate barracuda drives, specifically drives 1 TB or higher in capacity. These model HDs have a shocking 45% failure rate. I wish I had known this information before purchasing 2 myself, and losing all my personal pictures, videos, music and software. And worst of all, seagate addressed the problem with firmware fixes, but they do not work, as I upgraded the firmware immediately after installation. Stay clear of these hard drives, save yourself grief. FYI: I purchased this drive for $54 ... MoreBought this drive in September of 2011, Dead as of today, March 15, 2012. Seagate is a joke, and newegg needs to pull these products.

I'm using it on a Synology DS213 NAS. It's been working for about a month since it arrived and working fine so far. Hope it lasts. It isn't the fastest hard drive but for a home NAS should be good enough. Would have liked if it came with some screws since I had lost the original ones. Not a big deal, but good to know if you need to buy them separately.

This drive happened to come up on sale while assembling parts for a Media Center HTPC, so grabbed it. Ran great for 30 days. Then, watching an HBO show recorded the night before, the picture suddenly stuttered and froze. Could not reboot PC. Could not restore image backup. Reinstalled Win7 on an 8-year old Hitachi 80 Gig from a retired machine. Win7 reported SMART fail on the 2T. Ran Seagate SeaTools with same result. Seagate is sending a replacement under warranty. I was able to copy all recorded content onto an external drive, but all saved HBO shows are gone because Microsoft DRM support says "recorded on a different computer". Bummer. Seagate doesn't explain the reasons for SMART fail, but symptoms indicate bad media. Hopefully, the replacement will last longer. ... MoreThis drive happened to come up on sale while assembling parts for a Media Center HTPC, so grabbed it. Ran great for 30 days. I may leave the OS on the old 80 which is occasionally audible when up close to the PC, but is solid as a rock. Definitely will not put the OS on the 2T again.
I put this HDD in as a data drive for a new HTPC. Another component in the setup is a CableCard quad tuner board. The vexing problem was that Media Center frequently reported Weak Signal errors and other problems when trying to watch live TV. It all ultimately came back to this drive being bad out-of-the-box. One bleary-eyed night, I finally observed that when Media Center reported 'Weak Signal' errors, the HDD light was lit like a streetlamp, never even blinking. Resource Monitor revealed insanely long seek times. This broken behavior so interfered with the live TV's cache that Media Center's data stream contantly was interrupted. Downloaded and ran Seagate's HDD testing tools, and the 'Short Test' failed. I was impressed with how the tool walked me right through ... MoreI put this HDD in as a data drive for a new HTPC. I'm unhappy that this new drive was bad, and that I probably have a refurbished unit. Has worked fine since, recording hundreds of ours of HD TV.
I've had ten of the original F4 Samsung 2TB drives in my FreeNAS box for nine months, plus five more 1TB drives for over a year. All flawless. But late last year Samsung sold their hard drive business to Seagate... I just bought two more of these drives. They arrived bearing Samsung's name, but with Seagate contact information and Seagate's "Barracuda Green" brand on the label as well. Of course I haven't opened the cases, but the exteriors are slightly different from the earlier Samsung's. So I can't tell if these are still Samsung drives internally, or the much inferior Seagate Barracudas. Newegg still lists a three year warranty, versus one year for the Seagate Barracuda green. However, my two new drives did not include the little warranty/installation flyer which came packed with the old Samsung drives, so I have no proof of the current warranty. Time will tell, but experience has shown Seagate will probably let Samsung's original quality slide...
Part 3: So in summary -- the printed label is different though the product number is the same, the circuit boards are the same including Samsung-labeled chips, and unformatted and formatted capacity are exactly the same. Despite the Seagate acquisition, this still appears to be the same original Samsung design. It even seems to use Samsung parts (like the chips labeled Samsung). The Samsung design is proven. I have no idea whether the quality assurance in the China factory is as good as the South Korea factory. It's difficult to tell by reviews because frankly even the older copies had some DOA's and failures and some low reviews are screaming about the Seagate influence and short warranty. I plan to buy several more of these. I've not seen any other 2TB or larger model as reliable as this one. Good luck!
I've owned 2 Iomega external drives, both 500gb, powered and un-powered for 4 years, with Seagate drives in them. They never failed me. I've also upgraded an iMac with with A 500gb Barracuda a few years ago - it's a flawless drive, and it's still kicking today. My rig is running primarily off of a 3 month old 500GB Barracuda (Win7), with a 5+ year old Western Digital 160gb that I pulled out of my 2007 iMac, used mainly for my music collection. THIS drive serves as a storage edition for mainly non-essential items. Today when I got it, the first thing I did was let windows 7 install the driver software, then restart. Afterwards, I went into Disk Management and formatted this drive. Afterwards, I went into Disk Management and formatted this drive. Then, I dragged 5 gigs of data back and forth to test it somewhat, before moving some movies to it. It's working perfect. With some of the reviews on here I thought it would explode or something if I sneezed in it's general direction. I've owned 6+ Barracudas over the years, none have failed me.
Bought one in 2012 for my first build and it's lasted me until now. Generally don't leave reviews but this boy has been a trooper so I thought I'd give it the honor. Nothing has failed on it really, been having some other, non-related issues and I figured I'm getting to around the time where it might start to fail on me. Don't want to just lose all that data you know? Came back to this page to find out what kind of specs so I can buy something a little bit similar. Thanks seagate lol
All my games are on my 2tb hard drive though. Well, games, movies, rips of physical discs that I don't want to deal with, music, etc....it'll hold everything...I've never filled it. You'd have to either be a person who has to have everything installed even if you don't plan on ever utilizing it, or a pirate for piracy sake...which seems like a waste to me. Update: This drive has served me well for over 11 years now in a computer that's always on. This drive is primarily used for a media server. I've tried to find this particular model in the past as it seems to be built better than any other drive I've come across, but this drive has outlasted its brethren as well. It just won't die, and still shows fairly healthy in CrystalDiskMark
