Shimano Tranx 300A Baitcast Reel
Sets the bar for water resistance The Shimano Tranx 300A Baitcaster Reel is the next level in saltwater-proofed baitcaster reels. It features the CoreProtect Concept, which means the Tranx range has greatly improved water resistance while still maintaining a "free" feel when winding. This reel is ideally suited to most baitcasting applications, like soft-baiting, light jigging and casting small and medium-sized Shimano stick-baits. The Shimano Tranx baitcaster reels are ergonomic in the hand, pack more than enough drag, are built sold and have set the bar in the field of water resistance. You get a fishing reel with ultra-light handle rotation, needing less effort and power, which results in perfect rotation even under heavy loads. HAGANE Body HAGANE Body means this reel has a high rigidity and zero twist. The body stiffness and impact resistance virtually eliminate body flexing. The result transforms the anglers actions directly into cranking power. It's efficiency through strength. For a baitcaster reel that holds its own in the water, definitely try out the Shimano Tranx 300A Baitcaster Reel!

I picked up this reel about 5 months ago. I picked up the 401hg and put it on the new trevala px split grip jigging casting stick and it was a match made in heaven. This reel like every other shimano is absolutely buttery smooth and has great drag that never sticks. I’m from the north east and use this set up to jig for togs, sea bass, stripers, etc… This reel is a total beast and I had no problems pulling fish out of rocks and other structures. I really enjoy this fishing this reel and have nothing bad to say about it. Worth every penny for this reel. As long as you don’t get a defective reel you won’t be disappointed.

bought the L/H 401 with power handle for additional $40 a year ago. Really only two complaints except the time it took to find a L/H. 2. The braking system fails after X amounts of casts. I really have to pay attention to the fact that this completely deletes all tension on the drag. If a musky hits at this time, there's zero chance of any hookset.I "try" to check it every 3-5 casts, which is not pleasant.

This Tranx reel is bulletproof! This is a tough, no holds barred solid reel. This thing casts like a dream. It is very smooth when retrieving hard pulling lures and hard fighting fish. I love their simplicity when lubricating the gears and bearings. If you’re looking for a reel to last year’s and not let you down, this is it.

I bought this reel to put on my new Murray Cod setup and I have been pleasantly surprised about how smooth this reel is. For a semi budget reel it does the job. It has really good drag to and dosen't birds nest as much. I am really happy that I bought this reel and I look forward to buying more.
Love this reel! Purchased for Musky fishing, lined with 80 pound braid. The reel is exceptionally smooth, has performed flawlessly in the 1-2 months of use and has been 100% reliable. I've had good experience with Shimano reels in the past, and I hope and plan that in another 5-10 years, I will still be using and relying on this reel. Since I do limited musky fishing each year, the amount of use these reels should see on an annual basis is somewhat limited. Though I do plan to use them for pike fishing in the spring and fall on the lake I live on (which has only moderate sized pike). At the time I purchased this reel, I also purchased a Daiwa Lexa Winn 4000 Series, also for musky fishing. Though I do plan to use them for pike fishing in the spring and fall on the lake I live on (which has only moderate sized pike). At the time I purchased this reel, I also purchased a Daiwa Lexa Winn 4000 Series, also for musky fishing. I got both reels to determine which brand I liked better - I ordered the Daiwa in the higher torque/lower gear ration version. That reel arrived and upon first use, found it had a faulty thumb bar/clutch mechanism that 60% of the time prevented the spool/clutch/thumb bar to properly engage upon casting. Fortunately, I was fishing with a guide who is also a shop owner and authorized Daiwa dealer. Right off the bat, he said return it! Those are known problems with the Daiwa reels. We fished all day with his Daiwa reels and throughout the day found that a few of his Daiwa reels also had some clutch engagement issues. Sorry, but I am just not willing to rely on a problematic reel for my limited fishing time - that's why I've given up on the Daiwa Series reels (for musky fishing) and am sticking 100% with the Shimano Tranx Series. Now, after days and days of heavier lure casting and retrieving, some decent fish! I can say that I have been so impressed with the Shimana Tranx 400 (401 AHG) that I have ordered a second one in the 400 series (a 401A* - higher torque/lower gear ratio of the AHG version) as well as a Shimano Tranx 300 Series (a 301AHG*). * As a note, when the Shimano Tranx number ends in a "1", it means it is the left hand retrieve version of that model reel.I can highly recommend this reel. I prefer it with the power arm versus the paddle arm, but this is a matter of personal preference.
Very good reel. There tends to be a drag issue that there sometimes is almost no drag right after I just tighten the drag, its not a design issue, and it is not a materialsor quality issue, its a factory assembly issue. And to fix the problem typically it just takes removing the drag washers and putting it back together.
I would highly urge anglers that use heavy baits to give this a shot. Its been advertised and shown time and time again that the Tranx is a staple in the heavy bait category. I love the single handle, and fast gear ratio. I have mine on an Abu Veritas 7' 9" Heavy and it throws 3 oz baits with ease. Feathering the spool on this is not as easy than on a smaller profile reel, but with a few meters under a full spool, you can control the spool easier. Casts a mile and the drag is SMOOTH. The bearings inside are very high quality and I inspected them when I picked up the reel and as one could imagine from Shimano, the internals are gorgeous. Very clean and precise. Its worth every penny.
The Shimano Tranx 400 is a great reel, reliable, easy to use, strong drag system. I purchased for Musky fishing - running 80 pound braid with flouro leader. I've thrown lures up to 8 ounces (so far) with the reel, it's worked reliably and well, though my use so far has been limited since it is relatively new. At the same time I purchased the Tranx, I also purchased a Daiwa Lexa 400 WN reel - with the Daiwa having a little bit more torque versus the higher speed of the Shimano 401AHG (which has a higher speed gear ration - with results in lower torque). The Daiwa reel arrived faulty, the thumb bar which controls the free spool and clutch operation malfunctioned on about 65% of casts. I fished with a guide who used and sold Daiwa reels and he suggested I return it ... MoreThe Shimano Tranx 400 is a great reel, reliable, easy to use, strong drag system. The Daiwa reel arrived faulty, the thumb bar which controls the free spool and clutch operation malfunctioned on about 65% of casts. I fished with a guide who used and sold Daiwa reels and he suggested I return it immediately as it is faulty and that the Daiwa Lexa reels are prone to having this problem. When fishing with him for a full day, using his Daiwa reels, I experienced a slightly different but similar problem with his Daiwa reels (the thumb bar and clutch would engage in mid cast!). Since the Shimano had zero issues, I replaced the Daiwa with another Shiman Tranx, this other one in the lower gear ratio to replace the higher torque I was hoping to get out of the (returned) Daiwa reel. I've been so impressed with the Shimano Tranx reels, that I now have two in the 400 series and have just purchased a Tranx 300 series as well. Couldn't be happier. As for buying from FleetFarm! I was a bit concerned in doing this, having never ordered from their online site before and needing my product (reel) to arrive in time for a fishing trip. I was familiar with FleetFarm (having grown up in Wisconsin). I was thrilled with Fleet Farms handling and processing and shipping of my order. Not only did they have this hard to find reel, but the entire transaction was flawless and I was quite impressed. I will definitely order from Fleet Farm again when the product that I am seeking is offered by them at a competitive price.
This reel came highly recommended and it hasn’t disappointed! I paired it with my 8’6” heavy Mojo muskie rod and love it! Since this purchase, I’ve paired the Tranx 301 with my 8’6” med-heavy Premier muskie rod, and a Tranx 201 to my 7’3” med-heavy Fenwick bass rod. I’m now deciding on which Tranx reel to mount to my 7’6” Triumph heavy muskie rod. The 400 seems the right choice for heavy bait, however the 300 feels better on the rod, and it in my hand. Their is a considerable size difference between the two! Not so much of a weight difference. I’ll likely go with the 301 because it will also pair up nicely with other bass rods…. Their pricey! But I like them!!!
The two different braking systems are easy to dial in. Hands down the smoothest reel I’ve ever used. If you are into regularly cleaning the spool n piling bearings, etc…. With this reel you don’t have to do it often…. Compared to many other bait casting reels….after I’ve use it for about 100 hours, then there is a lil bit of dirt I see on a cue tip when oiling the spool. I’ve got two of them now…. Bought the first one in the spring, it’s December now…. I give it a 10/10…. I’ve caught hybrid stripers, steelhead… even muskies on it…it’s a tough reel that casts a mile every time. What more you need?
