The Shun series of chef‘s knives is one of the most comprehensive damask steel series worldwide and highly appreciated by top class professionals as well as ambitious hobby chefs. Shun professional chef’s knives are made from specific stainless damask steel with 32 layers. The core layer is made from VG MAX steel. This is an extremely hard (61±1 HRC, 1.0% carbon, 1.5% cobalt) and corrosion-resistant steel that gives the blade a sharpness that is second to none. The convex cut of the blade together with the manual honing of each Shun knife delivers an unrivalled sharpness that allows the knife to cut through even the toughest material. This sharpness together with the well-balanced weight of the knife makes for tireless work. Each Shun knife gets its unique and individual character by refining the natural beauty of the damask grain. This way every Shun knife is unmistakable and unique – a piece of art, united by craftsmanship, technology and design. Inspired by the masterful art of Samurai swords the technique for manufacturing the finest chef’s knives enables the Shun series even to deliver knives with western blade shapes.

Absolutely impressed! Five stars without a doubt. This chef knife was a gift from my late uncle, and it has exceeded all my expectations. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a versatile knife. It stays sharp and never fails to spark conversations when I'm hosting cooking parties. A true gem in my kitchen!

I never thought I would enjoy being in the kitchen so much, and it’s all because of the amazing Shun knife I purchase. It is my workhorse whenever I need to cut anything, and it’s such a pleasure to prep food with it. I was appreciative that I was able to purchase it from Crate & Barrel, and when I went to purchase wit at the store, it was my first time visiting and since then have enjoyed other purchases. So happy to find this knife and other great products from Crate & Barrel.

Every Day Multi-Tasker
24 February 2024

Although I have a variety of knives in my kitchen, I wanted to add one that would work well for tasks like cutting through hard shelled winter squash and slicing various foods thinly. The santoku shape met my criteria. After handling the ones made by the many manufacturers carried at William Sonoma, I decided the Shun Classic 7" Hollow Ground Santoku Knife felt most comfortable in my hand, enabled a rocking motion handy for cutting many veggies and was very sharp. The 7" size which is very manageable and the perfect addition for me. This knife is also esthetically pleasing with a beautiful blade.

Do not buy shun knives. They do not stand by their products. I used the knife 3 times, hand washed and dried immediately. After the third time, I noticed a pit in the blade, right next to the cutting edge, and it was starting to rust. Shun will not replace it. I didn’t put the pit there, it’s not possible. It’s a manufacturer defect. I don’t want my money back, I just want the knife replaced. They will not replace the knife. I had an issue with a Zwilling knife and contacted them, they sent me a new one immediately, within 5 days, That’s customer service. With shun, they told me to ship the knife to them, at my cost. They would look at it and determine if they would replace it. It could take up to 3-4 weeks is what I was told. I sent them pictures. It’s plain as day ... MoreDo not buy shun knives. My Most Important Knife
8 September 2024

This has been my most-used knife for more than a decade. I buy them regularly for gifts. Thin and light with great balance. Holds an edge beautifully. Super comfortable handle. After using it for thousands of meals, I can’t find anything wrong with it.

Not good
12 February 2024

Have already good knives. Got this as a gift. After a month of use, I noticed the tip is chipped and tiny chips along the blade. William Sonoma referred me to Shon customer service. So, I need to pay about 30$ for shipping. They most likely will grind a sharpen it. No. The quality is not there.By the way, when I went to WS (Walnut Creek), I asked to see some other knives, one of the Shon knives (displayed on the wall) has similar chipped edge. Not good.

Shun classic 7 inch Santoku
24 April 2024

My favorite knife in my kitchen hands down! Extremely sharp. Nimble in the hand even being a 7 inch knife. Wonderful to use dicing onions and vegetables. Cuts pork, fish, or chicken with absolute ease. Great knife!

Shun knives are the best!
24 October 2023

Shun knives are hands down the best knives I have used. I was looking for a new addition to the kitchen and the Shun classic 7” Santoku has over-performed. The knife is well balanced with enough weight to effortlessly perform any kitchen need while being light enough in order to give your hand relief. The handle is shaped to fit your hand and is sized to fit most hand sizes. I have been using the Santoku for the last month and have enjoyed every moment. I would recommend the Santoku and all Shun knives to anyone looking to take their cooking to the next level.

No hard chopping or or cutting anything with hardnes( Ike a hard sweet potato) or anything where a bone may be struck. If something does happen, send it back to Shun. Most small nicks can be sharpened out they do it for free. Do t letLocal sharpeners who use grinding machines touch these knives. Too much steel will be lost andBlade will not last as long. It will lose sharpening angle. I hid mine away because I knew someone should come along and WHCK, ruined. Or thrown in the dishwasher. Proper care makes all the difference and I promise you will be in love with this knife. It requiresMore of a light sawing or ‘train’ stroke and much lighter pressure is needed than your other knives. Even top end German knives because the blade s with is 30 percent more narrow which means more of a razors edge and less pressure..
