Sikkens produce a wide range of wood stains, so it is difficult to know which one to use without personal advice. As I bought this stain through eBay during the "lockdown", this was not possible. The can arrived without a product sheet, and few instructions are included on the can. On checking the Sikkens website, a full range of product sheets are available, but the one for Cetol Filter 7 plus has been withdrawn! I have used Sadolin Classic extensively as a wood stain, and this is thin to apply and penetrates deeply into soft wood and deteriorated hard wood. The job in hand was restoration of previously varnished oak french windows. Although the Cetol F7+ is clear so that the underlying wood grain remain visible as advertised, I was surprised to find the product ... MoreSikkens produce a wide range of wood stains, so it is difficult to know which one to use without personal advice. It does give a lovely finish with light oak coloration, but I don't know how deeply it penetrates, especially where the oak has weathered. I have therefore taken to applying a wood preservative first. I will then apply the Sikkens after the preservative has thoroughly dried. A final point is that without product literature, I don't know how many coats I should apply - only that brief instructions on the tin state "do not sand between coats"!

My builder swears by this brand he wouldn’t use anything else literally! Looks fabulous and apparently very long lasting!

Using this as part of 3 layer protection system. Two coats of this on top of Sikkens Cetol Hls plus. It adds just the right amount of colour and a little goes a long way. Used on its own over bleached oak it adds a touch of oak colour without overwhelming the overall effect. By the time I've finished it will be less than 2 litres for 20 windows.

Good Stuff! When it comes out of the can it comes out thick and viscous. Its like spreading warm honey (worked at 13C). It feels that its doing good. Very few runs. Its dries to a semi gloss finish if used with an HLS basecoat. When used with HLS the final rendition is darker than my expectation (light oak on pine substrate) but its warm and not displeasing. I have every confidence in this product and hope that it performs (colour stability & durability) as it should for the specified period.
Third occasion to use the paint. Gives a great finish goes on easy and looks likely to last a while or at the very least longer than the previous finish. Although more expensive than comparable products - happy with the finished result on three garden gates and garage double doors.
I really like sikkens products but it’s very confusing to decide which product to use or in which order to use them in. Which is outdoors- which is for indoor - which is base coat/topcoat. Oh two stage or all in one single stage.I wish they would label them with a simple description instead of all the confusing way it is at present.
I bought this and the Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus to renovate my wooden garage doors which had been damaged by a careless cowboy workman with a power washer while cleaning my drive. I scraped the entire doors back to the bare wood, applied one coat of Cetol HLS Plus followed by 2 coats of Cetol Filter 7 Plus (done over 3 consecutive dry day). Delighted with the final results. I only purchased 1 litre of each product and was pleasantly surprised to find that I had enough of each product left over to restore 2 garden benches with the same treatment. The products were a joy to work with, no runs or drips - even for a 69 year old female on her own! I bought the dark oak, and the only slight disappointment, which has nothing to do with the products, is that the doors turned out to be darker than I had anticipated. I should perhaps have chosen the light oak to achieve the colour I wanted. I hope the finish protects the doors for a quite a few years, but I would certainly purchased this again when they do need to be redone. Well worth the money!! Also arrived via post and exceptionally well packed.
Bone dry heart native timber, well prepped, sanded degreased. Used two undercoats HLSE and 2 topcoats Filter 7. Supplier refused to sell me any more as it was going wrong on other jobs within 18 moths. Said to use the HLSE only as filter 7 would wreck the undercoats as well when it went and the whole lot would have to be taken back to bare wood. Sure enough, within two summers the UV has stuffed it. Sikkens gave me bs about prep and skated. The joinery done solely in HLSE is good.
Used this product together with Cetol HLS plus. This gives an outstanding semi gloss finish. Product was easy to use. Applied 2 coats which made the door pop & bang, front door is properly protected & looks brand new. I would not use any other product for wood staining - it’s the best out there by quite some margin. Sikkens filter 7 plus & HLS plus were the same products and colour put on the door when new.
It is four years since I last used this product on a summer house and to be honest it could have gone another year or two before re-coating. It is easy to apply and the light oak colour not only lasts well, but draws approving comments from all who see it! Unlike some products, it resists flaking and simply needs a light sanding only before applying the first coat. Highly recommended.
