I was not happy with the results after a few sessions. I know it takes at least 12 weeks or more, but I also had concerns about the product. Braun says the flashing light won't hurt your eyes while it is pressed against your skin, but Braun also recommends to look away from the red light when the lens is against your skin (Braun clearly says not to look directly in to the lens when the product is on, which I never did). I found the information about the flashing red light to be inconsistent and wore sunglasses while using the product. Customer care said the discolored spots can happen during the manufacturing process, and the black dots were probably burnt hair. I shaved before using the IPL, and hair can't defy gravity and float up to the red lens when the IPL device is always pointing downward when in use.I decided to return it after that explanation. It cost me $33 to ship it back to Braun, and the refund comes in the form of a pre-paid debit card, not refunded to the original payment method.Braun should place the return details clearly on the same page as the product since people are shelling out several hundred dollars for these products.

Using the Braun Silk is extremely easy but I needed to read the instructions first! After reading, I shaved the areas I intended to remove hair from, dried it and I was ready to go. A couple of things I learned are that the device adjusts the power on its own using the skin tone sensors. Since my skin is relatively light, probably a three on the Braun diagram, the power bars stayed at around 8 lights (out of 10). I did not have any pain but it is also possible to decrease the intensity by using another button. An additional major point is that the skin tone sensors, located on both sides of the light treatment window, both need to be in contact with the skin or it will not work. If this happens, the power bars will not light up so it is easy to know if I am making ... MoreUsing the Braun Silk is extremely easy but I needed to read the instructions first! I used the Standard one on the majority of my legs. It is about two inches wide so would remain in good contact on the larger areas but on my shins I turned it sidewise to keep in contact with the skin. My knees needed the smaller head which is about an inch wide. The smaller head is also good for my face and underarm areas.I initially used the “gliding” treatment mode weekly which allowed me to cover a lot of area quickly. Now I also use the “stamping” method for touch ups on areas where I probably missed and hair has continued to grow. Overall, I am pleased with the hair reduction. My husband and adult daughters are now borrowing to use it as well!

I came across IPL hair removal on Youtube and thought long and hard about buying an at home IPL device. I scoured the internet looking at reviews on all of the different devices and looking at reviews from people who have tried these IPL devices. I decided on this one by Braun because it seemed that most people really liked this one and the results it produced. I read the instructions carefully and made sure I knew all of the do's and don'ts listed. Side note - MAKE SURE TO STAY AWAY FROM YOUR TATTOOS! IT WILL BURN YOU AND DAMAGE THE INK!" I accidentally hit the border of one of my tattoos and it legit burns the skin and scabs the inked areas. Also be cautious around moles because it will raise them and they will crust over. Also the areas where hair is thicker and darker this thing will zap you hard. Some of the areas like the bikini line and certain areas on my legs the device flashed harder than the other more fine haired areas. BUT I am here to tell you I have completed my 5th treatment and the hair on my stomach and legs has SIGNIFICANTLY decreased. This is a life changer for me. I wish I would have found this device sooner. I could have saved myself so much money and embarrassment as a result of excessive body hair growth. If you have any doubts about this product please don't hesitate. My mother is even amazed by what this IPL has done for me. If you are diligent and follow the instructions as they are, you will see results. I wish I would have taken before pictures. The only side effects are that I have gotten a few areas of folliculitis but the more the hair's growth decreases I have noticed that is issue is becoming less severe. My confidence is so much better now that I don't have to hide my stomach as much. If you can get this device please do it. I believe everyone should feel their best and not have to fret over their body hair or the ingrown hairs and sores they leave behind.

The Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 is a good quality and reliable home IPL system. This isn’t my first type using a home IPL but I still made sure to do a patch test as recommended. I liked that the SensoAdapt automatically adjusts output power level for skin color/tone. There are useful lights on the side to show you the level being used. There are three settings (standard, sensitive and extra sensitive) but I mostly used standard after a few patch tests. I liked that it recharged relatively fast between flashes so that it didn’t take a long time to finish a session. I have committed to using this mostly on my lower legs and underarms, so I don’t really need all 3 different sized treatment heads. However, I do like that I have the choice to change the size if I want to do a smaller area. I didn’t find the flash to be too bright but I did look away as is recommended when in use. The controls are easy to use and understand.I found the construction of the machine to be well made. It is easy to hold in my hands and comfortable. The ergonomic shape does mean that it does take up a bit of room. I was surprised by how large the base station was but I do like that the plug on the cord is small and easy to plug into outlets without taking up multiple spots. I don’t think it will be easy to travel with due to the size of the base station and the machine (not impossible though) but I also don’t see myself wanting to use this on vacation and don’t mind using this only at home. The included pink case is really cute and pretty, even if unnecessary and bulky. The divisions inside make it annoying to remove the device since there are three levels with the cord, machine, and base station on separate levels so you have to pull everything out. It is still a nice touch though and makes the whole process feel special. While this system can be used by a wide range of skin and hair colors, the technology is really only for some and I like that the box and written materials are very clear on this. I do wish they had more information on hair growth cycles and how IPLO technology functions so that consumers have a more realistic understanding of what to expect. Use is not recommended when your skin is tan so these winter months are a great time for me to use this to get ready for the warmer months. It takes 12 weeks to be finished with initial weekly sessions, so I cannot speak to the end result but I am looking forward to seeing what happens.

It features SensoAdapt technology, automatically adapts to your skin tone 80x per second, and adjusts the flash intensity accordingly.A treatment schedule is included for optimal results, the device should be used once a week for 12 weeks. After the initial treatment phase (12 treatments), we recommend the device is used once a month or as required. It came in a beautiful grey leather case, and I like how they included a Venus Gillette Swirl razor for you to shave with the day before treatment to ensure there is no hair on the surface area. Included are 2 heads, the standard head, and the precision head - ideal for smaller & sensitive areas. You would use the stamping method for these hard-to-reach areas. Which is achieved by pressing and instantly releasing the treatment button, permitting a single flash. For fast and efficient treatment of large areas, you would use the gliding method, pressing and holding the treatment button. The laser generates a warm sensation when the device flashes but is ultimately pain-free.There was one thing that was notably absent and a rather important thing at that! That is eye protection.Something that is stressed with utmost importance each time I receive any laser treatment. Why would at home be any different? Upon inquiring with the manufacturer, Braun, they stated that IPL is “perfectly safe for your eyes. There's no need to wear goggles when using the device. The skin contact sensors ensure that the device can only be triggered when in full contact with the skin.” In contrast, the included handbook warns you of the potential harm to your eyes (potentially leading to loss of vision) and recommends you look away from the device when pushing the treatment button.I firmly believe that eye safety is of utmost importance. Ones sight is not something to be skimped on.I found this to be a great option to maintain improvements between professional treatments.

I have light Asian skin with dark hair and have gone to get professional IPL hair removal which has been effective in the underarm and arms after a few treatments. I was curious if I could get similar results with this in home treatment that is a fraction of the price and so I tried it on my legs and bikini area which I shave once every week. You have to make sure there is no hair on the skin so you should shave the day before your treatment. I left it on the standard setting and I love that it self adjust and I don’t have to worry about changing the setting for the flash intensity!I have noticed that my hair is thinner and lighter and grows much slower without any dark stubbles, ingrown hair or any razor burns. It really doesn’t hurt to use, it’s just a slight pinching but the sensation lessens with each treatment. The only thing is that you have to be consistent and do it once a week for 12 weeks is what is recommended and then just maintain as needed after that. I’ve only gone through a couple of treatments and so far it’s working well for the value.

I bought this at the end of February. I have ghostly white skin and dark black hair so I should be an ideal candidate for this product. I have tried it on arms, armpits, chin, and legs and have always used it on it's strongest setting and followed the recommendations to treat once a week. My only praise for it I that it didn't do "nothing" since whenever I do 2 or 3 weeks of treatments in a row my hair growth is visibley slowed and I temporarily seem to have less hair. There is no sign of any permanent reduction for me even after many treatments though. Whenever I skip a week the hair growth comes right back to it's original thickness. This would still be an acceptable result for me if it was quick and easy enough to use on a weekly basis, but this device is tedious ... MoreI bought this at the end of February. This would still be an acceptable result for me if it was quick and easy enough to use on a weekly basis, but this device is tedious and poorly designed. I had choosen it for it's quick flashes, but it will only flash quickly for about 30 seconds before it starts to overheat, and then it slows down a lot. The overheating was bad to start out, but seems to get worse and worse with time. I find that I can treat for about 3 mins, then have to let it cool for about 5 mins before resuming treatment, otherwise it gets hot enough to burn. To treat both arms takes about an hour. The skin tone sensor is useless too, often refusing to flash if there is a slight shadow or if the angle isn't quite right, and there is no option to disable it.For context, I had both legs professionally lasered about 10 years ago, and saw a permanent reduction of at least 60% of my leg hair...this in contrast has zero permanent effect, it's more like waxing that last slightly longer.

I was kind of scared at first but so excited to try this product out to see if it would work because I hate having to shave my legs so often. I felt a little intimidated at first because this seems like such a professional product and I didn’t feel that I was qualified to use it, but it is actually very easy to use once you read through the easy-to-follow instructions. Most important is to make sure you shave well first to remove all the hair in the area you want to treat and pat your skin dry. I have pale skin with thick, dark hair that grows very fast so in the past I would have to keep shaving at least every other day to keep it from being noticeable. Before using this product, it seemed like my legs would start feeling prickly from hair coming back in the same day I shaved. I’ve used this once a week for a month so far. The second week I noticed my hair didn’t grow very fast at all and when it did come back in the hair was softer feeling and much finer, not as prickly. I do have some spots that I noticed no hair has grown back yet. They recommend after 3 months of weekly use you should be able to go down to once a month for maintenance. My skin already feels so silky smooth after using this product. I haven’t experienced any irritation after using it either. It is very easy to use. It may take a couple tries at first to figure out how to hold it right so it can sense your skin correctly, but once you get the hang of it the process is a breeze and you can glide right along. There are 3 different settings you can adjust for strength. The first 2 don’t hurt too bad and are more of like a warm sensation, pinch or a sting for a split second, but the strongest one can be just a little painful. It is recommended to start out on the lowest setting to get used to it. There are 2 different size attachments so you can use it in smaller areas like bikini, chin, or upper lip or larger areas like your legs, arms, and stomach. It does have a sensor that picks up differences on skin tone such as moles or tattoos and adjusts. It has a light that flashes to tell you if it is in proper contact with a valid skin tone. It would be easier to maneuver if it was wireless, but I’m sure that would compromise the length of time you could use it at once. It is very bright when it flashes but wearing sunglasses and looking away during the flash helps.I like that it also comes with a nice case to store all the pieces in and it makes it easy to travel with, if needed.I’m really looking forward to the summer months of sporting shorts with smooth legs and not needing to worry about looking down at my legs to see hairs I missed screaming out at me or realize that I forgot to shave and then be self-conscious the rest of the day. I have already recommended this product to all the ladies I know.

This is a very thorough review

I have now owned the Silk Expert Pro 5 for 12 months, and I’ve learned quite a bit, so buckle up.The box included the device, a carrying case, and a razor. No eyewear. I understand that the website says eye protection is not needed, however just about every other website you can visit regarding IPL recommends eye protection. It would have cost Braun very little to include a set of cheap goggles, especially if they purchased in bulk and gave the manufacturer credit, promoting their product. Instead Braun includes a razor that will last you, at best, a month? That’s if you even choose to use it. I have sensitive skin and it took me years to find the perfect razor. The last thing I’m going to do it use a new brand immediately before applying IPL to my skin. The last thing I’m going to do it use a new brand immediately before applying IPL to my skin. Braun, ditch the razor and include some eye protection, whether you think we need it or not. It’s going to take considerably longer than you think to remove all your hair. I am very pale, like second, maybe third shade of foundation from the very lightest, but I have very dark hair, and the hair on my legs grows quick. Like, shave in the morning and have stubble by night time kind of quick. In summer I would shave the top half of my leg, above the knee, one day, and below my knee the next day, and just alternate. Every day. I had to shave my armpits every other day. I had to shave my lip and two spots on my chin every other day. I was going through a razor every two weeks and they weren’t cheap. When using this device, you shave the area you’re going to treat, then use the device, so you really don’t know what spots you’re missing. Also, the longer you use it, the slower the zaps get. After doing about half of my calf, the zaps get slower. I would say I spend about 10 minutes each time I use it. I follow the same pattern I did when I shaved: shave above the knee and use the device one day, then do below the knee and my armpits the next day. I would then wait a couple days and repeat the process. After about 4 months I could go a week without having to shave my calves. I went from using it twice weekly, to once weekly, to once every 10 days or so. It took about 8 weeks of consistent use to stop shaving my armpits three times a week. Now, I have to do an armpit touch up, cleaning up the random hairs that I missed, maybe once every 10 days, if that. After 12 months I’m to a point where I can go two weeks without shaving my calves in shorts weather. I’m still working on my upper legs, specifically the inside of my thighs. That is some stubborn hair, but I’m down to shaving that about every 10 days. My upper lip and chin are a completely different story. I used to have to shave my upper lip and two spots on my chin every two days. Now I can go three days, sometimes four if I’m lucky. I wonder if it’s because that hair used to be waxed. I’ve never waxed my legs or armpits, but I did wax my lip, and a rogue esthetician saw some hairs on my chin one time and threw wax on them before I even knew what was happening. That hair started growing in faster and darker and was the bane of my existence for about 10 years. I’m REALLY hoping that the IPL will eventually start working on those areas better, but it’s been a year of consistent use on those areas, so I’m not holding out much hope. All in all, if you’ve got the money, this is a good little device. I don't have before and after pictures, I've never put that much stock in them, they're too easy to fake. I can’t speak to how well it will work on lighter hair, but if you’re patient and consistent, you’ll have success on darker hair, just know it’s likely going to take longer than the four weeks they say it will take for “lasting hair reduction”. That, and the lack of protective eyewear, is the reason for only three stars.

Truly life changing
14 September 2023

I've had facial hair my entire adult life and as a cis woman it's been devastating. I've done *everything* to try to get rid of it or minimize it - waxing, plucking, shaving, epilating, dermaplaning, professional laser treatments. The professional treatments were the best, but they were thousands of dollars and the results were very brief - even with a full year of consistent treatment a lot of hair would return within a month. There was no way that I could continue to spend that kind of money on a temporary solution. I spent hundreds on other brands of at home IPL and they were useless. After seeing so many positive reviews for this Braun IPL I decided to give it a go. The results are so far beyond what I hoped for I could cry. There was no way that I could continue to spend that kind of money on a temporary solution. I spent hundreds on other brands of at home IPL and they were useless. After seeing so many positive reviews for this Braun IPL I decided to give it a go. The results are so far beyond what I hoped for I could cry. I've been using it twice weekly for two months and there has been a drastic decrease in the amount of hair, texture of hair, hyperpigmentation from years of skin damaging hair removal methods, and a massive improvement to the overall texture of my skin. My constantly embarrassing five o'clock shadow is gone. Some realism: you Must patch test, you Must start at the lowest setting and only work your way up when you know your skin can handle it, you Must follow the directions regarding shaving vs plucking - this is a serious device. Be aware it works best on dark hair and only middling on blonde hair (my dark hair patches are Gone, but the blonde patches are more stubborn). I do use this in combination with tretinoin, which is doable but higher risk. I let my skin get used to the IPL for a month before resuming tretinoin. I have a routine of tretinoin, wait three days, IPL in the morning and tretinoin in the evening, repeat, giving my skin a few days of recovery from the tretinoin before the IPL. I'm not recommending that you do this without patch testing and knowing what your skin can handle, but since I saw so many mixed messages online about it, it's worth mentioning that it may be doable for you.Being able to do IPL treatments in the privacy and psychological safety of my own home, with the consistent twice weekly cadence that I require, has been amazing!! I hope they never ever stop making this product and I hope it works for you too.
