More “Sturdy Duty” than Heavy Duty…

Granted, I wouldn’t consider these “Heavy” duty like the Manfrotto (classic 504’s) line or Cartoni systems, but they can surely handle lighter DSLR rigs for a loooong time (anything south of 10 lbs). I think the system will become a bit battered and fatigued faster with weight capacities at 12lbs and higher. Instead of a twisting/rotating knob, this would be a 100% winner if it were designed with a locking lever instead. IF THAT’S EVEN A FACTOR FOR YOU!! It’s all preference! (I’ve found that unlocking with a rotating knob gives a bit more jolt than systems with a locking lever). By all means, it’s a preference based.Well built. Solid enough for plenty of situations. Moderate rigs (nothing too heavy) will fly with amazing wings with this one!! I’m a fan !! For real. SmallRig for the win yet again!! =)

The embedded Allen wrench is a very nice touch and the extra screws are too.Overall, I was skeptical because of the very intriguing price but I am pleasantly surprised! I have been using this tripod the past few weeks and I have found minimal issues with it. The only thing I wish this tripod had would be a beam in the middle of the tripod head to allow the head to move vertically so I don't have to adjust all of the legs for minimal movements. The tripod head itself is very sturdy and has a very smooth motion when panning. It is a bit heavy although I haven't found it to be much a hassle. For the price I don't see how you could beat the value this tripod offers.

[Rewarded Review] Feels Cheap
8 July 2024

Picked this up needing a fluid head tripod on a budget and got exactly that, a budget tripod. This looks premium but it feels cheap. The tilt and pan have no drag adjustment (wasn't expecting any just letting anyone curious know) and the tilt has a heavy spring that makes it want to stay level. The quick release for the camera is made of plastic so I felt as though my camera was being secured cheapily. I bought on discount for $100 so I'm not too beat up about it, but I wouldn't recommend this product...

[Rewarded Review] Great Value Tripod
13 October 2024

I purchased one of these tripods last year and was pleasantly surprised with the build quality and simple, solid features. It’s obviously not top of the line by any stretch, but is one of the better affordable options out there for a simple studio video tripod. That original tripod broke in an irreparable way about a month ago, just outside of the warranty window, which was frustrating. But, kind of what I expected for $160, if I’m being honest. I replaced it with another of the same tripod because the value still feels reasonable. Needless to say, if you can’t afford a Sachtler, Manfrotto, or the like, these will tide you over until you can make the leap.

I was concerned this would be heavier than my old tripods. And it is.Because it makes my old tripods look like toys. This is just a great piece of gear. Every time I take any of my cameras with me, this is in the car. Skip the lightweight aluminum stuff and buy a real professional TOOL. Couldn't be better. That's it.

I had submitted a previous review for this tripod with the ReviewID: 16324812. If an admin at B&H could delete that review I would much appreciate it.Now lets get down to brass tax. I originally wrote a negative review for this tripod. Several of my issues about this tripod still stand but it's not completely useless as I previously thought. I originally thought it was useless because the lever locks would not allow the legs to hold any weight. I thought this was because of the how thin the tubes are for the legs. I was wrong. I was looking around the lever locks today and noticed a single hex screw behind each of the lever locks that tightens a back plate to provide friction on the legs for the locks to work. These screws were too loose out of the box which caused the lever locks to not hold weight. I took a screw driver (number 3 precision hex bit), tightened them up, and now the lever locks hold weight just fine. Don't tighten them too tight or you might break the lever lock housing. I still stand by my observation that the plastic used is not the best and I still don't feel as though this is going to be your one and done tripod forever but for the cash if you need something that will get results this would do the trick. Now since I took a closer look at this tripod I found out there is not as much plastic on this thing as I once thought. I took a knife and scratched the areas that I thought might be plastic or metal and found that the apex, the knuckles that connect the leg tubes to the apex, the back plate for the lever locks, the leg tubes, the head, the quick release plate, The joint that fits in the bowl for the head to level, the tube that goes through the bowl to the tightening knob, and the cross braces for the legs are all some form of aluminum. So less chance for things to strip out or fracture like plastic would. What is plastic is the lever lock housings, which is kind of concerning, the levers on the locks them selves, the knob to tighten the bowl, and the head tilt and pan knobs are plastic. It is so light that it seems like the whole thing is made of plastic but it's not.The Video Head is Aluminum and I still stand by the fact the the quick release mechanic is a bit too fiddly and not smooth but It does work and it will hold your camera without worry of it slipping off. It appears to be a fluid head on the pan and tilt planes though there are zero drag controls. If you try to use the pan knob as a drag knob it won't work as it's too jumpy. The knob for the tilt does work okay as a drag knob so you can tilt and stop where you want it to. You will have to tighten the tilt knob to just about locked and it will require more effort than a head with drag controls but it does work and it is adequately smooth. No drag on the pan is kind of a drag though (pun intended). It's as free as a bird when panning but the panning is smooth.I miss judged this tripod due to the screws being very loose out of the box. Just make sure you tighten those screws (not too tight) and this tripod should serve you well at least until you can buy a heavier duty tripod. This tripod would also work good for a run gun shoot in a pinch since it is so light and you don't have to worry about losing it too much in sketchy situations since the price is pretty fair. I would recommend this product now.

I bought this when it first came out at $400 direct from SmallRig because I was tired of having to adjust the 2 stage legs of my old Manfroto tripod. The SmallRig is very poorly built. One of the hinges on the sticks has completely broke off as well as one of the tension knobs on the fluid head. The bag is tearing with minimal use like the zipper stitching coming completely out and there are holes throughout. The first time I used the tripod dust got onto the legs and they have not worked right since and always stick. It's also very limited with how low you can shoot with it. This tripod made me thankful for my old Manfroto which I went back to it after the second time using the AD-01. Full Disclosure: I only purchased this tripod because it was a black friday special that made the price hard to pass up. I was fully aware of the quality I was getting.Pros: the head is actually rather solid. the built in allen wrench on the tripod plate is greatCons: screws falling out on first use. they need to be tightened on nearly every shot.Overall, this is a budget tripod. It may work great for your needs, but plan on needing to upgrade down the road, as I do not expect this tripod to last over a year.

The feet are nothing special but thats a good thing. They work on all terrains well. The tripod head is smooth and I like the locks. Although this is not a true fluid head with multi-step locks, it is still great for the price. If I could I would give this 4.5 stars instead of a full 5. For the price, this tripod comes in at a great value. And I'm considering buying one more for my wedding purposes. I'd be replacing a Magnus VT-5000, which is much heavier and much more annoying to deploy. I would've made it readable from the side too, but that probably would've added to the price.
