Is it the collapsed length? Is it the overall length? I'm not sure why, but I bought this tripod for travel and it's wonderful. My criteria were weight, levers instead of twist-knobs, decent maximum height, decent collapsed height, Arca Swiss-type quick release, and a ball head that can handle the weight of my camera/lens combination. The panning knob is smooth, the ballhead is smooth, the ball lever is smooth, the quick release knob is smooth, and the over quality is fantastic. I highly recommend this tripod.

As they say about cameras, the best tripod is the one that you have with you. The AP-10 is so light that I now always bring it when hiking. For a light-ish kit it's great, and that's all I can carry anyway on longer hikes. Legs and ball head are working smoothly so far. Stability seems quite good, although haven't tried it in high wind or a river. And the price is amazing compared with others that I looked at.
