Extremely disappointed with the Smeg Electric Kettle. The product is great aesthetically with its fun, retro design. Unfortunately, as many of the other reviews highlight, the device produces a strong burning plastic smell (likely due to so much plastic used in manufacturing). Directions suggest running it 3x before using to eliminate this smell, but it never went away. There are also large Prop 65 warnings all over the side of the box it comes in. Leading one to be very skeptical of the safety of this product (which is used at high temperatures).

I love this kettle, chosen for the design and had minimal plastic. It does what it is supposed to do-boil water rapidly and it's in use several times a day.The kettle is a bit heavy when completely full of water so I only fill it halfway. (arthritic hands) When I received the kettle, it had a noticible odor - like plastic burning-but that smell seems to have dissapated. The electric cord is hugely thick, which to me, seems like overkill. But overall I like it. It's a little functional eyecandy for my counter
When the kettle arrived it had a flaw in the enamel, and a rusty spot inside. I was able to contact SMEG directly for a replacement under their warranty, but for a "high quality" kettle it was disappointing to have that low a manufacturing quality. THe kettle is heavier than I expected, and when full is difficult to lift. The handle looks very attractive, but the angle is such that it makes pouring awkward and uncomfortable. The whole device does look great, and it's the quietest kettle that I've ever used.
The kettle is very attractive and heats water up quickly. My 3-star rating is based on the fact the kettle I received does match the description on the Bloomingdales website. According to the description on the site the kettle should have "7 temp. settings (LED display)." The kettle I received only has an on/off switch and switches off automatically when the water reaches boiling temperature. A bit disappointing. I've decided to keep the kettle since unpacked it and used it before I realized it was not as described.
It boils water fine and does its job as a kettle. However when it stops boiling, it makes no sound or indication it has completed the process, nor will it keep it warm. The worst part about this product is it smells like cancer. After months of ownership, it still has a very strong smell of burning hot plastic on the outside and inside of the product, and the steam that comes off of it. No amount of cleaning makes it go away, and the smell fills the entire kitchen. I do not believe this product is safe or healthy to make tea.
I loved the way the tea kettle looked was excited to get such a beautiful kettle. I purchased two one for a vacation home and one for the main home. Unfortunately the main home kettle completely stopped working after 8 months of use. The second kettle stopped working 6 months after use and it barely was used as much as the other. There’s a definite design flaw in the connection to the base heating element. I did purchase these a few years ago so I hope they have worked this problem out but for the price it’s hard to justify such poor quality. The toaster I purchased from them is excellent though and yes I bought two both are holding up well.

It was well taped all around, I guess to keep it together. After opening that box, I noticed the kettle didn’t have the manufacturer’s original packaging, it was in a plastic bag. The plate that’s connected to the plug was just thrown in box. The kettle and the plate had water spots and fingerprints on them and the plug was dirty with black marks. If this wasn’t enough to indicate I was sold a used item, the instructions manual had dirty fingerprints on the front and back. Terrible!! For this price, I expected much better. I was so excited to gift this tea kettle to my parents for Christmas. They have been using it for the last month and keep hoping for better results. Every time they boil water, the whole house starts to smell like burning plastic and the water tastes horrible.My parents currently use their cheap kettle to drink out of, and they boil water in the smeg daily hoping the smell will go away. They had to dump so much water out already! We tried all the remedies but nothing is working.The 30 day return is not applicable because I bought this a month before Christmas. Waste of almost $200
